1 Technical Specification Sheet Rev. 6, March, 2000 Unitary Controller The Unitary Controller can operate as an independent stand-alone controller, or can be connected to the APOGEE Automation System via a Local Area Network (LAN). This extends the benefits of the APOGEE Automation to all of the building's HVAC equipment. The enclosure of the Unitary Controller allows it to be installed in a number of different manners, and makes it ideally suited for both new construction and retrofit jobs. The Unitary Controller may be mounted directly on the HVAC equipment or on a nearby wall. Features Figure 1. Unitary Controller. Description The Unitary Controller provides Direct Digital Control (DDC) technology for temperature control and energy management functions. The Unitary Controller is ideally suited for the following types of HVAC applications: Air handling equipment Single zone Variable Multizone Dual duct Rooftop units Steam converter and water system control Document No P25 Extended operating temperature range for dependable operation in extreme temperature environments. Vibration protection for mounting directly on HVAC equipment. Custom programmed for the exact equipment and application requirements. The operating program and point database are permanently stored in non-volatile Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) for protection against power loss. The Unitary Controller is user programmable using the proven Process Control Language (PCL) programming language, and may be modified using Programming Tool Software. Time schedules, set points, and other operating parameters can be assigned or changed using the Keypad Display or Unitary Controller Interface Software. Universal inputs and outputs for application flexibility. Page 1 of 6
2 Hand-Off-Auto (HOA) switch for each digital output for temporary override control during start up and service. Alarm, trending, and monitoring capabilities to aid in system diagnostics and troubleshooting. Reliable stand-alone operation is possible with a real-time clock that is battery backed up for power failure protection. Compatible with a complete line of Powers sensors, actuators, and other accessories to provide a total system solution. Modular construction for easy servicing. Description The Unitary Controller assembly consists of the following hardware devices (Figure 3): 1. Enclosure with termination backplane. 2. Card cage assembly (Figure 4), including: a. Processor card b. Input/Output (I/O) card c. Power supply card 3. Keypad display (optional) 4. Optional I/O card Enclosure The Unitary Controller enclosure consists of a 13-1/2" W x 15-1/2" H x 7" D (34 cm x 39 cm x 18 cm) metal cabinet designed for wall surface mounting or for direct mounting on HVAC equipment. Access to the cabinet is provided by a hinged front door equipped with a lock. All wiring terminations are made at a backplane mounted to the rear of the enclosure. A card cage mounts over the backplane for mounting the various card assemblies. Each Unitary Controller has the following card capacity: one processor card, one or two I/O cards, and one power supply. Input/Output (I/O) Card The I/O card is the interface between the processor card and the wiring terminations. Each I/O card has the capacity for 12 points as follows: 4UniversalInputs 3 Universal Outputs 2 Digital Outputs 3 Digital Inputs (1 can be a Pulse Accumulator) There can be a maximum of two I/O cards in each Unitary Controller. Power Supply Card The power supply snaps onto the card cage and conditions power for the Unitary Controller. The power supply has an On-Off switch, a replaceable fuse, and a power-on light indicator. Keypad Display (optional) The keypad display is an optional user interface that is mounted on the enclosure door. It is password protected. Some of the functions that the user can perform through the keypad display are: View and set date and time Adjust the Time-Of-Day (TOD) control schedule View and command points Monitor points Optional I/O Card An additional I/O card increases the point capability to 24. Card Cage Processor Card The processor card contains the microprocessor, memory, and the real-time clock with its battery backup. 3 Unitary Controller Interface Software Unitary Controller Interface Software runs on the Portable Operator's Terminal and allows the user to communicate directly with the Unitary Controller for typical operator functions, including: View and set date and time Adjust the TOD control schedule View points and values Set and view trend information and alarms Modify set points View totalized values The terminal uses full English language and English Engineering or SI units for all prompting functions, eliminating the need to remember coded commands. Figure 3. Unitary Controller Internals. Programming Tool Software The Programming Tool Software runs on a PC and allows the user to generate or modify the point database and operating program. The point database is generated in a prompted format, and the operating program is written in PCL. The program and database are permanently stored in the Unitary Controller's EEPROM. Up to 32 Unitary Controllers or other LAN devices can be connected to each of the three Powers field panels or LAN Controller LAN trunks. This allows up to 96 controllers per field panel. Communication with the controllers can be initiated from any System 600 field panel on the system network (see Figure 6). The System 600 network does not require additional hardware to connect Unitary Controllers. When Unitary Controllers are wired to a field panel, all the features offered by the APOGEE Automation System are available to the Unitary Controllers. These features include energy management programs, alarm reporting, centralized control, modification of the system database, system-wide troubleshooting, the global commanding of devices, and modem support. There are two software packages available to aid in operating and servicing the Unitary Controller: Unitary Controller Interface Software and Programming Tool Software. Both software packages run on DOS-based PC computers. The Unitary Controller Interface Software also runs on a Portable Operator's Terminal, which also works with other System 600 products.
