2 Power System Simulation Laboratory Venue: Ground Floor Department of Electrical Engineering (New Block) (Opposite Electronics Lab) Description This course is a continuation of Power Electronic Devices with an emphasis toward industrial electronic controls. Emphasis is placed on solid state motor controls, programmable logic controllers, velocity control and position control. Skills emphasized are in set up, operation, programming and testing of these types of equipment. Lab Objective: To equip students with knowledge about operation characteristics and major application areas of modern power semiconductor devices and associated power converters. To introdue the students with the use of Scan Drive System Panel and to get them familiar with electrical machinery at industrial level. To give them an ability to design and choose such systems for various industrial applications. Lab Equipment: 1) Scan Lab System panel equipped with Resistive, capacitive and inductive load units One AC and one DC machine both of which can run as motor or generator Brake control unit to operate with separately excited DC machine 2) Cathode-Ray- Oscilloscopes 3) Dual DC Power Supplies (30 volts) 4) Analog Multimeter 5) Digital Multimeter 6) Pentium IV PCs (3 GHz CPU, 256 MB RAM) Lab Staff: Syed Mansoor Ali Shah Lab Assistant: Mushtaq Ahmad Lab In Charge: Dr. Zubair A. Each group has to carry out four experiments. Each experiment starts with a quiz to measure the readiness of the student to do the experiment. Report is required for each experiment. Two Research Assistants / Lab Engineers are allocated by the Department to supervise the laboratory work.
5 1. Study of 3-Phase Bridge Rectifier working and characteristics (Fig. 3) 2. Speed Control of DC Motor using field control armature control (Fig. 4) Learning Objectives Learning Objectives List of Experiments: Analyze the operation of three phase rectifiers. Distinguish between half-wave and full-wave bridge three phase rectifiers. Construct and test three phase half wave and full wave bridge rectifiers. 6 Connect and test the operation of a Reduced Voltage starting system using the factory supplied manual as a resource. Identify the need for Soft Starting of motors. Apply a soft starting system to a typical three phase motor. Connect and test the operation of a soft starting system using the factory supplied manual as a resource. 7 3. Power factor improvement using synchronous motor 4. Explain the basic principle of a Programmable Logic Controller (Fig. 5) 5. PLC Trainer Software Experiments using Mitsubishi PLC (FX MELSEC-F) Learning Objectives Identify the basic components of a PLC. Describe the function of each of the basic components of a PLC. Explain the operation of a PLC in terms of one complete scan cycle. Describe Input/Output (I/O) structure for the SYSMAC C200HE PLC. Describe the Memory System Architecture of a SYSMAC C200HE PLC. Identify types of PLC Input/Output devices. Compare the different types of digital I/O interfaces. Describe typical power distribution wiring to a PLC.
