European Open Science Cloud for the management, analysis and re-use of research data; 2. European Data Infrastructure combining: - processing data (HPC infrastructure) - storing data (Data infrastructure) - moving data (Network infrastructure) 3. 12 European Data Infrastructure underpin the European Open Science Cloud and other users support the EU to rank among the world's top HPC powers with EU technology close the chain from R&D to the delivery and operation of the future exascale systems development of a full European HPC ecosystem - acquiring leadership-class computers - deploying HPC services to science, industry and SMEs - securing our own independent HPC system supply (e.g. low power HPC chips) 12

14 High Performance Computing HPC enables leading edge research and discoveries in every area of science and technology HPC is an strategic resource for sovereignty and effective and timely policy-making, based on scientific evidence and simulation HPC is a critical technology for the digitalisation of industry to innovate and compete (in particular SMEs) - traditional sectors are more productive, moving up into higher value products and services - pave the way for new business and application Quantum Ambitious, long-term and large-scale effort to unlock the full potential of quantum technologies 14

16 Widening Access and Building Trust Data Infrastructure service delivery empowered to serve all European users: Smart Municipalities Labs and Universities scientists but also for other users from industry (including SMEs) and the public sector. 18 European Data Infrastructure The realisation of the European Cloud Initiative requires the mobilisation of very important European, Member States and private funds Preparation of an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) on HPC and Big Data enabled applications Horizon 2020 will support the kick-start of implementation, but additional public and private investment are estimated in 4.7 billion in 5 years (~ 3.5 billion for the European Data Infrastructure) Governance: management and the development of the infrastructure and services, decision making on funding, long-term sustainability and security including users (EOSC, public sector), implementers (e.g. PRACE, GEANT) and funders, building on existing governance structures 18
