Implementing BCM Frameworks Monday 19 November 2012 Aidan O Brien Head of Resilience and Security National Australia Group Europe
Murphy s Law 1. If anything can go wrong, it will 2. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the first one to go wrong 3. If anything just cannot go wrong, it will anyway 4. If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which something can go wrong, and mitigate these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop 5. Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse 6. If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something 7. Nature always sides with the hidden flaw 8. Mother Nature is a bitch Murphy was an optimist! Or a Business Continuity Manager!! 2
Today s Agenda What is BCM? What is a BCM Framework? Why implement a Framework? What should your Framework deal with? Common elements of a BCM Framework Obstacles to implementing a Framework Overcoming the obstacles Benefits of a BCM Framework 3
What is BCM? Business Continuity Management is a management process that identifies potential impacts that threaten an organisation and provides a framework for building resilience and the capability for an effective response which safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders, reputation, brand and value creating activities. BCM is inclusive of; disaster recovery; business recovery; crisis management; incident management; emergency management; product recall; contingency planning; and just plain old plan B. 4
What is a BCM Framework? A BCM Framework is a Policy, process, guide or approach (back of a fag packet) that can be used to build resilience, the capability for effective response and safeguard the interests of the business. A Framework can be as simple or as detailed as it needs to be. It helps safeguard your company and your company s reputation. If a business can t continue, it loses business, customers and money. If a business can t recover it fails! Think that disruption incidents will never happen to you? Business Continuity is not just about big events. It s about being ready for any incident that may cause disruption to your business. Power failure, virus attack, equipment failure, flooding, accidental damage? 5
Why implement a BCM Framework? What example events have / could have disrupted your business in the last two years? 6
What should your Framework deal with? A Business Continuity event is a disruptive event, whether anticipated or unanticipated which causes an unplanned disruption affecting the business The following table highlights the most common known Business Continuity events: Note: In extreme scenarios such as 9/11, all of the above disruptive events may occur simultaneously. 7
Elements of a BCM Framework A BCM Framework is common sense and essentially very simple. It should outline what you do, what you will do if things go wrong and how to do it. There are only three key questions to consider; What do we do with our stock / customers? What do we do with our staff? Who do we tell communication There are other considerations that you should challenge as part of the framework; Do you have system back-ups; how often; where are they stored? Can you operate from another location? How quickly do you want / need to recover? 8
What are the obstacles in implementing a BCM Framework? Too expensive What s the return on investment Won t happen to us Isn t it only for big companies I don t rely on computers It s too difficult No staff buy in Not taken seriously 9
How can you overcome the obstacles? Sell the benefits Business Continuity Management (BCM) is relevant to any organisation, large or small, from any sector. A Framework can give confidence to the staff, customers and the business owner. Through good BCM you can protect your business. BCM is an established part of the UK government s preparations for managing the risks faced by organisations.. Business Continuity provides a roadmap and guidance on how to manage any disruptions to the business Don t over complicate it! 10
Benefits of a BCM Framework Business Continuity Management can help differentiate companies - Having a BCM Framework in place means you can illustrate to clients how you may be able to recover your operation in just a few hours Implementing Business Continuity Management can save you money across the business - The planning that goes into a BCM Framework can help you review the organisation s processes. Having good Business Continuity Management is great for your reputation after an adverse event - The effective handling of any incident can have a positive effect on a company s reputation Insurance may not cover all your losses - There are some things that business interruption insurance will most likely not cover. loss of business opportunities, loss of reputation, the cost of losing current business customers, the erosion of brand value and new products and services being delayed or cancelled. Some organisations are finding that they can keep insurance premiums down if they have a proven BCM programme. 11
Summary What is Business Continuity Management. What is a Business Continuity Management Framework. Its not just for the big events or big companies. Recognise the different types of Business Continuity events. Obstacles and how to overcome them. Benefits of implementing a BCM Framework. 12
