IBM Site Enablement Services Resilience for Your Data Centre 13/05/2005
Why Site Enablement Services? Hardware and Software are becoming increasingly dependable, but the environment in which they operate can cause IT systems to be unavailable and inefficient Users: PC, , Software: data bases, CRM, ERP, Web-site, Hardware: Servers, Routers, Physical Infrastructure Infrastructure related downtime is a large contributor to computer system and network outages (incl. physical space, mechanical structures, fire protection, and power considerations). IBM Site Enablement Services provides the expertise to integrate, implement and optimise the physical infrastructure to create a resilient, scalable, and secure IT environment. 2 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
Business Drivers & Considerations Resilience Could or have there been service disruptions in the past (power, cooling, general environmental issues)? IT Floor Space What are the medium to long-term plans in terms of data centre capacity (consolidation vs. expansion)? Cost of Ownership How cost effective is the current environment in terms of management and maintenance? Skills What skills are required to plan and design a resilient, secure and cost effective infrastructure? Right 1 st time Risks associated with the design of new data centres are high and can have severe cost implications. Single Solution One stop shop from beginning to end. 3 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
How can the infrastructure cause IT failure? Loss of production can occur from a wide variety of sources. Even the smallest variances in the data centre environment can have a significant impact on systems availability. Any of the following external factors can cause a performance degradation or in the worst case scenario an outage of critical IT systems: high temperature ambient humidity (too high, too low) fire (inside the data centre or adjacent to the IT room) flooding power outages or fluctuations security breaches sabotage product failure A resilient infrastructure is key for the for the availability of a company s IT systems. 4 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005

Servers: 1u (up to 256 servers) to 5u size Mix of rack-mounted and non-rack mounted servers 1 to 9 network interface cards per server 1 to 4 power supplies Associated Services: First level LAN connection Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) Power Distribution Cabling Systems 10 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
Benefits Improved Availability and Resilience Improved venting and airflow system Better cooling of server and storage devices Works in conjunction with traditional aircon systems Multiple redundant and managed power outlets 1 to 4 outlets per server Local power distribution modules Colour coding for ease of installation 11 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
Benefits Scalability and Flexibility Ready for all types of servers Single concept for rack-mounted and non rack-mounted servers Simplified reconfiguration and addition of new servers for fast upgrades Rapid Installation / Simple Upgrade All connectivity (network and power) integrated inside the rack No special floor preparation required, other than for basic installation planning activity for other large systems or storage devices 12 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
Benefits Simplified Management Integrated Cabling Short connection distances Colour coded Reduced risk of human error Integrated KVM Integrated Keyboard-Video-Mouse switch for local and remote access 13 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
Benefits Higher Server Density Improved Space Utilisation Integrated power and data cabling results in 15% to 25% improvement in space utilisation. All 19 inches of the rack can be utilised. The Integrated Server Farm solution reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and delivers a higher Return Of Investment to IBM customers. 14 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
Why IBM? IBM delivers range of "environmental" solutions from simple to very complex IBM has few competitors with the same wide ranging capabilities Most competitors operate in niche areas whereas IBM offers more components for a total end-to-end solution IBM's objective is to minimise the amount of change to limit risk to the project or business IBM offers fixed-price solutions versus competitors that offer low-entry price with profit made on change variations No one considers the total picture like IBM Right first time, on time, in budget! 15 Site Enablement Services Overview 13/05/2005
