1 Solution Brief Agile Data Center Solutions for the Enterprise IP Fabrics: Paving the Way to Digital Transformation The data center sits at the core of the business, housing mission critical applications and the intellectual property that defines the business. Digital transformation is well under way and is a critical component in the evolution of businesses across all verticals and markets. Data Center Networks must dramatically change to support this modern digital business as its needs are becoming increasingly dynamic and distributed. Emerging next-generation technologies are shaping this new data center providing the business agility needed to be competitive in the market. Extreme Networks Agile Data Center encompass solutions that enable business agility while ensuring architectures that allow for ultimate flexibility and interoperability. The data center IP Fabric is foundational to the overall Agile Data Center offerings. Delivering Value Business agility is delivered using automation, visibility and analytics on top of a solid IP Fabric foundation. The ability to automate Day-0 and Day-n operations for deployment, ongoing moves/adds/changes, as well as troubleshooting will enable data center operations to become nimble and dramatically reduce the human error factor. Visibility into the network is key to properly sizing requirements and meeting SLAs for all applications and services. The view into what s going on is also key to proactive management and reducing mean time to resolution in times of service issues. Lastly, analytics will turn simple data and statistics into actionable insights in a timely manner. In short, automation reduces time to service, visibility is the what and analytics provides the why and how. Providing an Evolutionary Approach to the Data Center Industry Interoperable Spine Leaf Architecture Embedded Automation BGP/EVPN Scalable Plug-N-Play Organizations undergoing a digital transformation require flexible data center infrastructure to ensure business agility and achieve competitive advantage. Extreme IP Fabrics leverage proven, vendor interoperable, open standard protocols to deliver superior automation and scalability to address the rapidly changing requirements facing data centers. Based on a cloud-proven, standard BGP-based design, these fabrics bring the best practices of mega-scale data center automation and expansion to any size data center. IP Fabrics enable open programmability and integration with commonly used open source tools, providing an evolutionary approach to data center automation and cloud optimization that allows organizations to move at their own pace. To ease the transition to IP fabrics and automation, organizations can leverage on-box embedded fabric automation for IP fabric provisioning, validation, troubleshooting, and remediation. 1
2 As an integral part of the Extreme open, standards-based approach to data center design, IP Fabrics are optimized for Layer 2 and Layer 3 deployments with flexible network virtualization support options that enable seamless workload mobility, security, and segmentation within and across data centers. Extreme s Agile Data Center automation, network visibility and analytics and open adaptable platforms enable any vertical and all sizes of organizations to quickly respond to technology transitions and deliver services at the speed of business. Automation Leads to Efficiency Network lifecycle automation improves and accelerates IT agility. Extreme offers various levels of automation that allows the business to adapt at its own pace. From basic IP Fabric deployment, to customized workflows with Extreme and third party tools such as Python and Ansible to full IT automation with Extreme Workflow Composer, there is an automation solution right for every type of environment. Plug-n-Play IP Fabrics Embedded Fabric Automation (EFA) simplifies the deployment of the data center IP Fabric. The on-box EFA application runs as a service on the GuestVM and uses industry-standard open API based programmable interfaces and CLI to provide the easiest way to deploy, provision and automate single or multiple large data center IP Fabric networks in a fast and efficient way. Simply cable the devices, configure a management IP and run the application from a single spine switch. The IP Fabric underlay and overlay will be fully configured within seconds on an IP Fabric of any size. Customized Automation For data center environments requiring some level of customized automation, Extreme offers a variety of solutions. The SLX switching and routing portfolio is highly programmable with support for REST APIs, YANG data models, NETCONF, and Python running directly on the devices. Off-box tools include support for Ansible playbooks (github. com/extremenetworks/ansible-extreme) and integration with Puppet and Python scripting. For full cross-domain IT automation, Extreme Workflow Composer powered by StackStorm provides industryleading integration among network, server, storage and services. Customized workflows are easily created that can be triggered manually or automatically through events in the IT domain. For a list of integration packs available, please visit Extreme SLX Insight Architecture Network visibility from wire to workload delivers pervasive real-time monitoring and intelligent automated actions leveraging the guest VM capabilities onboard the SLX platforms. Visibility is an essential component to delivering actionable intelligence for efficient automation. The first of two recent Extreme innovations to provide pervasive visibility, the SLX Insight Architecture was introduced on the SLX platform. Now, customers have the same visibility edge-to-edge, throughout the entire data center. Guest VM Runs in a KVM environment on various SLX switches and routers. This enables visibility for network-wide insight through a dedicated analytics path, ensuring high performance without disruption to network traffic. Dedicated analytics storage provides real-time capture for easy and fast access, while flexible, highperformance data streaming provides off-device processing, reporting and archiving. Visibility Services Innovation in visibility is derived from the flexible ASIC that has been programmed for richer extensibility in the device versus being constrained by what the merchant silicon provides. There are two main elements to this service; rich classification and action. Rich classification is important because of the need for multiple layers of visibility from the physical network, through the overlay network to the workloads themselves. The potential actions (such as mirror, count and so forth) are dynamic and can be configured manually by the operator as well as through automation by adding a workflow that can react to specific events/criteria. That data can also be pushed through sflow, span port, streaming APIs to third party or Extreme tools for additional analysis, visualization and reporting, or logging and archiving. SLX Visibility Services are enabled on the SLX platform offering visibility from top of rack through spine; from wire to workflow. 2
3 Enabling High Scalability and Resilience with IP Fabrics Extreme Management Center The Extreme Management Center user interface unifies all the capabilities in a single easy-to-use web-based interface. With Extreme Management Center, critical network information is accessible and easy to use. This powerful tool enables both managers and technical staff to be more efficient in their provisioning, monitoring, reporting, analysis, troubleshooting and problem solving tasks. Dashboards streamline network monitoring with consolidated status of all the devices and the ability to drill down for finer detail. State-of-the-art reporting provides historical and real-time data for high level network summary information and/or details. The reports and other views are interactive, allowing users to choose the specific variables they need when analyzing data. Web-based FlexViews enable real-time diagnostics. Inventory Management Automates management of device configurations, firmware, and hardware/software inventories. It also provides tools to capture, modify, load, and verify configurations. Extreme s flagship IP Fabric Solution is built upon the SLX switching and routing portfolio. The SLX switches and routers for spine, leaf and border leaf deployments can be positioned flexibly in an IP Fabric depending on port density and bandwidth requirements. IP Fabric solutions leverage BGP for the underlay and BGP-EVPN for the overlay to provide simplicity, interoperability, and trafficengineering capabilities in the data center. This allows customers to build networks of any size without having to constantly re-tool the network. IP Fabrics deliver scalable performance with ease, leveraging the popular IP Clos architecture with Equal Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) routing. Extreme SLX flexible platforms deployed in a spine-leaf network provide a non-blocking and scalable framework necessary to support the digital business. Based on open standards and a cloud-proven BGP architecture, IP Fabrics offer flexibility for maximum vendor interoperability. Data center administrators can easily add spine and leaf devices as needed to increase path diversity and bandwidth for east west traffic, enabling higher application performance and resilience. Spine-leaf Clos networks have three-stages an ingress stage, a middle stage, and an egress stage which provide multiple paths and deterministic hops for traffic to be switched through the non-blocking spine, ensuring resilience and peak application performance. Servers can be connected to the leaf switches in either a single-homed manner or, for additional resilience, in a dualhomed manner using Multi-Chassis Trunking (MCT). User Interface Unified web-based interface and finegrained interactive search for network analysis, problem solving, help desk visibility and reporting. Alarm Management Core to any management platform, provides event-based and performance based alarms indicating trouble or potential trouble areas Application Analytics Extreme Analytics analyzes context-based application information to deliver business insights on applications, users, locations and devices. These insights help you improve the security posture of your organization and track shadow IT, unapproved, malicious applications. Figure 1: Three-stage Clos network with single-homed servers or with dualhomed servers. 3
4 Data centers requiring even greater scale can build a five-stage Clos super-spine network. A super-spine network consists of multiple spine-leaf data center pods that are connected through a third set of higher-level spine switches (see Figure 2). As with a standard IP Fabric, a super-spine network supports highly resilient and redundant connections. In short, these are multiple three-stage Clos pods interconnected with a super spine, creating a larger, optimized five-stage Clos fabric with Layer 3 connectivity between pods. Figure 2: Five-stage Clos network connecting multiple three-stage Clos PoDs. IP Fabrics built with SLX platforms deliver dynamic scale and agility, enabling data center architects to design their networks for existing usage as well as future growth. Fabric scale is determined by which Clos model is used and which platforms are deployed at the leaf, spine, and superspine levels. Table 1 provides relative data center rack scale depending on the chosen Clos model and platforms. For more detailed information about Extreme IP Fabric scale and platform design options, review the Data Center Fabric Architectures Solution Design Guide and the Extreme SLX Agile Data Center Portfolio At-a-Glance. 3-Stage Clos 5-Stage Clos Rack Scale Super-Spine N/A N/A N/A SLX SLX SLX G Fabric Spine SLX SLX SLX Leaf Rack Scale Super-Spine N/A N/A N/A SLX SLX SLX G Fabric Spine SLX SLX SLX Leaf Table 1: Extreme IP Fabric scale with Extreme SLX switching and routing portfolio 4
