Tech Talk #11 Public Cloud UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT BOULDER 12/14/16 CU TECH TALK #11
Who is this idiot speaking? Orrie Gartner Deputy Director of Operations Where is the Tech in this Tech Talk?
For those who can not wait till the end

Cloud computing definition cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction (NIST 2011)
5 Essential Characteristics of Cloud Computing Image Source: linkedin.com
Cloud service and deployment models 3 service models: Software (SaaS) Platform (PaaS) Infrastructure (IaaS) 4 deployment models: Private Community Public Hybrid
IaaS Clouds out there today Administrative Computing: At least 14 private clouds on campus (not including OIT) Research Computing: At least 6 private clouds on campus (not including OIT) Teaching and Learning: At least 2 private clouds on campus (not including OIT) Also aware of public IaaS usage (AWS, Azure, Google, Rackspace, etc)
Why public cloud? Improve speed of delivery (agility) Allows for innovation Provides scalable and elastic compute Improves service levels Improves access to data Shortened time to market Allows campus, including OIT, to focus on core competencies
NOT a cost savings Image Source: i.huffingtonpost.com
In short. Do more. Provide more services. Provide new services. Provide services quicker.

CU-Boulder Cloud Vision The University will offer a multi-provider public cloud deployment service in a hybrid configuration providing cloud services for administrative, teaching & learning and research needs with OIT the central point of contact acting as the broker of these cloud services. 14 CU-Boulder Cloud Vision The University will offer a multi-provider public cloud deployment service in a hybrid configuration providing cloud services for administrative, teaching & learning and research needs with OIT the central point of contact acting as the broker of these cloud services. 15 Why this vision? Reasons previously mentioned for why public cloud plus Allow central procurement to handle the contracts and licensing Provide infrastructure for all of campus to leverage: No need for each individual department to focus separate procurement, basic network security, IP management, firewalls, billing, identity management, etc. Campus should be focused on the applications that campus is demanding
Cloud Strategy Cloud Opportunistic Strategy prioritizes cloud utilization. Cloud services can fulfill many, not necessarily all, of an institution s computing needs, and reduces the dependency on physical assets.
This talk sucks. Where s the Tech? Image Source: iacpublishinglabs.com
AWS:ReInvent talking points (stolen from the big kahuna at Amazon) We are going to become software people Agility is the most important thing in IT You can have it all stability and agility. Embrace many small incremental changes over big changes. Not about putting servers in the cloud. About leveraging cloud services to transform and disrupt the delivery of services to the customer.

Let s get going to the public cloud Things in motion Cross-Campus Cloud Working Group Advancement, CU-Boulder, CU-Denver, CU-Springs, UIS Subgroups formed: SaaS IaaS Finance
Things in motion... POC for Advancement UIS, Advancement, and CU-Boulder collaboration in POC Look multi-campus collaboration. It CAN happen!
Things in motion... Terri Fiez Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation Research Cloud working group formed October 2016 Similar cloud vision Cloud survey sent December 9 th to faculty and researchers Focus groups to start in February Working group to reconvene and continue through spring semester
Things in motion OIT IaaS public cloud project OIT IaaS public cloud project January 2017 start Scope: single provider public IaaS service focused on the support of administrative and research computing needs for CU-Boulder that will allow OIT to act as the provider and broker to campus for cloud IaaS service.
OIT IaaS public cloud project How to get there: 6 defined phases based on Educause pathways & Gartner Group High level work to occur: Cloud Center of Excellence team to be formed Identification of impacts to various teams Readiness matrix/decision matrix I have XYZ service. Where should it go? Migration path on an application-by application basis: Re-host: lift & shift Refactor: slight modification to take advantage of elasticity Re-architect: heavily modified application to take advantage of cloud-native capabilities Rebuild: application completely redone from scratch, jettisoning old code and 100% cloud-native development Replace: SaaS or native Cloud offering Contract and procurement
OIT IaaS public cloud project (high level work cont.) Core Architecture Design and Deployment: Networking to/from cloud provider Cloud Network Architecture design (VPC, Vnets, DNS, DHCP, IAM) Architecture of tenancy model Security controls Availability, business continuity, DR Financial model Forecasting model (estimate one s bill) Provisioning process Incident response process Automation of standard cloud services Monitoring and continous audit & improvement Cost optimization: change from pay for what you use to pay for what you need

Can t wait? AWS sandbox/playground $50 credit (see Vasa or me) AWS on site for deep dives in the new year
