The Evolving Data Center Dominic Loh Product Manager, Power Quality, APAC
Data Centers are enabling global growth Proliferation of mobile computing Digitalization of everything Big Data 2
Evolution of Data Centers Room level focus Rack level focus Virtualized Mainframe dominant Segregated by function CPU DASD Tape Centralized environment Consolidated applications Server Dominant / Rack & Stack Rackable servers and storage Segregated by system Decentralized Independent applications Virtual / Cloud Ultra high density POD environments Virtual applications rule ?? Migration to Decentralized Systems Segregated by system Systems distributed to department Applications run on purpose built systems Server Dominant / Secure & Reliable Segregated by function Power Density - Availability Centralized environment Consolidation of applications 3
Data center business imperatives Maintain High Reliability Lower TCO Reduce Capital Increase Efficiency Improve Flexibility Adopt Future Technologies Scale Capacity Enhance Safety 4
Maturity Adoption Efficient and sustainable products Vendors have been challenged to produce products that offer higher levels of efficiency and are sustainable In a large data center a 1% improvement in efficiency can save significant operating expense ~50% of the Global 500 have written plans for sustainability Transformer Free UPS Multi-Mode UPS operation Fans with VFD In Row cooling Aisle containment Busway use in data center 5
Maturity Adoption Convergence of subsystems Data center engineers must now take a holistic view of a site to optimize reliability, safety, efficiency Electrical, Mechanical and IT PUE = Power Usage Effectiveness Total data center input power IT load power Electricity is the highest operating cost in many large data centers Designing subsystems in isolation leads to overbuilding and inhibits advances in automation Complexity of data center operations is rising while performance expectations grow Data Centers with application specific reliability Multi-tier data centers Vendors are getting more involved in design development Site performance is more important than any one product 6
Maturity Adoption Enhanced electrical safety As data centers grow in power and complexity, selectivity and arc flash mitigation strategies can allow interfacing with switchgear without moon-suits Arc incidents cause downtime for the data center and capital and legal costs In the USA there are 4000 nondisabling, 3600 disabling and over 360 deaths per year due to electrical hazards Six safety strategies: 1. Label Equipment & Train Personnel on Good Safety Practices 2. Reduce Available Fault Current 3. Shorten Clearing Time 4. Move People Further Away 5. Redirect Blast Energy 6. Prevent Faults 7
Maturity Adoption Higher data hall temperatures ASHRAE and server vendors have introduced broader allowable environmental ranges for ITC operation Operating data center above dew point saves energy by eliminating humidification / dehumidification CRAC / CRAH units take up valuable floor space, and costly to maintain Data centers are now being designed without chiller plants or CRAC units They will be more sensitive to disruptions in cooling Proper air flow management and rack hygiene are important 8
Maturity Adoption Modular data centers Data centers are starting to be designed for modular and prefabricated construction This approach challenges conventional thinking Modular construction is attractive in the proper circumstances; Scalability Decreased cycle times Consistent quality Lower TCO Modular data center market is still evolving Containerized approach Prefabricated subsystems in traditional shell Spectrum of standardized and customized offerings 9
Maturity Adoption More hours of economizer cooling Number of cool hours has become a key criteria in site selection Increase in number of chiller free data centers Mechanical systems are often the largest source of wasted energy in the data center Chiller plants with cooling towers have a high capital expense Chillers are being sized smaller (or eliminated) and used as backup More packaged air handling units Mix between air side and water side economizers 10
Maturity Adoption Virtualization and Cloud Decoupling of software from hardware platforms Increase IT utilization to ~80% Utilization of IT assets is traditionally <10% Allows companies to expand data center capacity without construction (temporarily) Work load balancing and Site Recovery Services can complicate management of data center Legacy power monitoring platforms can cause downtime 11
Maturity Adoption Robust monitoring platforms Today s monitoring solutions are collecting more detailed data from more devices than ever before Historically need to monitor power quality and investigate outages Recently more focus has been put on energy and resource management Allows for cost allocation to customers or other departments Strong need to integrate diverse hardware systems More metering devices are preinstalled into electrical equipment One supervisory system to report power, environmental, life safety and conservation data 12
