1 Container Solutions Zoover Case Study A JOURNEY TO THE CLOUD Building a continuously delivered, container packaged, microservice oriented and dynamically managed cloud native system.

2 CHALLENGE Zoover, a rising star in online travel booking, sought a bold move towards the cloud to gain a more agile, future-proof setup. To make this shift happen, a development team was assembled in-house and a third party was hired to handle the infrastructure. Unfortunately, these changes did not bring about the desired results. The previous system was slow to react, and the teams illequipped to handle changes. Simply put, the existing infrastructure could not support a smooth transition. The shift towards a cloud native system had already begun for Zoover, but the absence of an automated process, and the lack of experience in implementing one, were holding them back. To make the most of what was already accomplished, the solution would require building on the pieces already in place. A sophisticated knowledge of existing cloud solutions and understanding Zoover s unique needs was necessary to achieve the desired results. We were up for the challenge. SOLUTION For us, it is never about a quick fix. We always look at the big picture and create custom solutions that last. This is why at Zoover, we started with conversations, explorations and listening. Our team of specialists then mapped out the current situation we call this the Discovery phase. Based on the outcome, we began designing ideal scenarios that would offer a long-term solution. From there, we conducted in-depth research for each scenario the pros, cons, risks, challenges and established concrete tasks. Since Zoover had a small operations team, it was important to implement a managed solution for the cloud native infrastructure. We achieved this by using Google s hosted version of Kubernetes (GKE) along with a Continuous Delivery pipeline based on CircleCI. Once the infrastructure was in place, we integrated Google Stackdriver for future monitoring and logging. This technology automatically aggregates recurring errors, giving Zoover the ability to easily spot problems in the new system. With a newfound autonomy, the now modern Zoover cloud native environment could be easily maintained, even without our extended external support.

Code is first tested on the developer s local environment (in this case, a cluster running locally on a laptop). Code integration and review is achieved using the hosted Git repository, Bitbucket. Developers can quickly create Feature environments on the Test cluster, in order to test a new feature in isolation before integration and deployment in the main Test environment. Once a new release is deemed production ready, it can be deployed to the Production environment.

ELASTIC CLOUD Zoover s infrastructure consists of two Google Container Engine clusters running Kubernetes. The Test cluster runs the main Test environment, and any Feature environment developers are using. The Production cluster only runs the single Production environment. Fastly is a managed CDN used to route traffic from the internet to the Production and Test environments. BENEFITS Zoover set out to build a truly cloud native system that was capable of handling any challenges that lay ahead. With the support of our experienced team, they managed to do just that. Equipped with an automated build process, and a new set of skills, Zoover now has more control over their development environment than ever before. As a result, costs have been dramatically reduced, and they have established an image that attracts highlevel talent. To ensure that Zoover could maintain this standard, we imparted our best practices surrounding caching and failover in order to minimise any future downtime. Today, they have a fully functional cloud native system that continues to exceed all expectations. The journey to the cloud was just the first step in what is now a long-term collaborative partnership between our team and Zoover.
