SEEM3450 Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship Cloud Computing Guest Lecture Gabriel Fung, Ph.D

What is Cloud Computing? According to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) A model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction Gabriel Fung 2

Standalone vs. Client-server In computing there are only two kinds of applications: Standalone application In short: everything (user interface, data, programs, business logic, ) stores in one single computer. E.g. an offline game, the calculator app in your computer, Client-server application In short: resources store in more than one location. E.g. the user interface in your computer (i.e. the client), the data and business logic in another computer (i.e. the server). E.g. an online game, Facebook, Gmail, Quite obvious, cloud computing do nothing with standalone application, but helps client-server applications a lot! 2017 Gabriel Fung 3

A Case Study Hosting A Web Site Suppose you want to build a website. Traditionally, you need to: Buy a server-grade computer. Install a bunch of software and configure it as a server. Rent a rack at a data center. Move your server-grade computer to the data center. Plug the cables, wires, etc., to make it online. Then, you can start your web development Gabriel Fung 4

A Case Study Hosting A Web Site (cont d) Once you website is online, initially it may have a few visitors only. Gradually, you may have more and more visitors... Then, your server is not powerful enough to server so many visitors. You need to: Buy a new and more powerful server-grade computer. Go to the data center. Take the original server offline. Install the new server. Configure it and take the new server online again Gabriel Fung 5

A Case Study Hosting A Web Site (cont d) Perhaps your new server is too powerful, or perhaps there are some unknown reasons, you just discovered that the utilization rate of the new server is only 20%! You waste lot of money to buy such a powerful server! But the above is a better case. What if you find that the new server is still not powerful enough?! 2017 Gabriel Fung 6

A Case Study Hosting A Web Site (cont d) With cloud computing, the whole story changed! You simply find a company which provides cloud computing facility. Sign some agreements with them, pay them, then you can put your web site into the cloud. If you suddenly need more computing power, you can scale up almost instantly. Obviously, you can scale down as well. You get the right computing power that you need on the cloud on demand instantly. Your visitor can always stay happy as there is no disruption of services Gabriel Fung 7

Cloud Computing Access You access the cloud resources via your computer. You don t need to physically touch the hardware. In fact, you even never know where is the physical location of the hardware. The principle: you don t focus on the hardware, but focus on your core business components. E.g. the look and feel of your website, how to attract more people, what do you want to provide on your website, instead of the hardware configuration, server version, etc Gabriel Fung 8

Cloud Computing Billing Different companies have different billing models. But they usually based on one simple principle: how much you use, how much you pay! Similar to your gas billing, or riding a taxi Gabriel Fung 9

Benefits of Cloud Instead of buying 10 servers, rent a data center to host my servers and manage them myself, I now can lease X servers from a vendor where X is a variable number decided by me. I can change this X whenever necessary. Flexible and scalable Gabriel Fung 10

Benefits of Cloud (cont d) Perhaps in the peak hour of a day (e.g. 10:00pm 1:00am), I need 10 servers to serve my customers. But all other time, I only need 1 server. This mean 3/24=12.5% of the time, I need 10 servers, whereas 87.5% of time I only need 1 server. In other words, 90% of the server are idle 87.5% of time! With cloud, I can choose using 10 servers during 10:00pm 1:00am and all other time using 1 server. A potential huge cost saving 2017 Gabriel Fung 11

Benefits of Cloud (cont d) Offload the tedious and time consuming management chores to a third party. Save money on hardware/software upgrade/maintenance. Accelerate deployment timetable Accelerate ROI Business-oriented yet flexible, scalable Enterprises can focus on innovation and R&D 2017 Gabriel Fung 12

Drawback of Cloud Computing Performance and latency Security Reliability of the cloud provider E.g. can the provider guarantee a fix of an error within 24 hours? 2017 Gabriel Fung 13

Cloud Computing Services Software as a service (SaaS) You can use the provider s applications running on the cloud infrastructure. Example: MS Office 360 Google Docs Common use case: Replaces traditional on-device/offline software 2017 Gabriel Fung 14

Cloud Computing Services (cont d) Platform as a Service (PaaS) You can deploy your own applications onto the cloud infrastructure using the programming languages, libraries, services, and tools supported by the provider. You do not need to manage different libraries, versions, version control, etc. Examples: Google App Engine cloud.google.com/appengine Amazon Web Services aws.amazon.com Common use case: Increases developer productivity while decreasing an application s time-to-market 2017 Gabriel Fung 15

Cloud Computing Services (cont d) Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) You can process, store, run arbitrary software or access other fundamental computing resources in the cloud infrastructure. You do not need to buy extra hardware, computing components, etc. Examples: Google Compute Engine (GCE) cloud.google.com/compute Microsoft Azure azure.microsoft.com Common Use-Case Extends current data center infrastructure for temporary workloads (e.g. increase Christmas holiday site traffic) 2017 Gabriel Fung 16

Choosing A Cloud Server Provider Carefully select a reputable, experienced third party cloud services provider The cloud services provider must work closely and transparently with the corporation to build a cloud infrastructure that best suits the business budget, technology and business goals Gabriel Fung 17

Service Level Agreement Checklist What types of equipment do they use? How old is the server hardware? Is the configuration powerful enough? How often is the data center equipment/infrastructure upgraded? How much bandwidth does the provider have? Does the service provider use open standards or is it a proprietary datacenter? How many customers will you be sharing data/resources with? Where is the cloud services provider s data center physically located? What specific guarantees if any, will it provide for securing sensitive data? What level of guaranteed response time will it provide for service and support? What is the minimum acceptable latency/response time for its cloud services? Will it provide multiple access points to and from the cloud infrastructure? How will financial remuneration for SLA violations be determined? What are the capacity ceilings for the service infrastructure? What provisions will there be for service failures and disruptions? How are upgrade and maintenance provisions defined? What are the costs over the term of the contract agreement? How much will the costs rise over the term of the contract? Does the cloud service provider use the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to transmit data? Does the cloud services provider encrypt the resting data to prohibit and restrict access? How often does the cloud services provider perform audits? What mechanisms will it use to quickly shut down a hack and can it track a hacker? If your cloud services provider is located outside your country of origin, what are the privacy and security rules of that country and what impact will that have on your firm s privacy and security issues? 2017 Gabriel Fung 18

Public Cloud vs. Private Cloud The biggest advantage of a private cloud infrastructure is that your organization keeps control of its corporate assets and can safeguard and preserve its privacy and security. Your organization is in command of its own destiny Gabriel Fung 19

Conclusion Let us repeat the first slide cloud computing is: A model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. For me, cloud computing is more or less a marketing term. Yet, it is stunning, sexy, beautiful, J 2017 Gabriel Fung 20
