3 Green IT & Sustainability Survey: 2009 U.S. Results IDC conducted its third annual Green IT & Sustainability Survey across 10 industrial countries - Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States of America. The survey was started and completed in July The survey was conducted online, with appropriate distribution of small, medium, and large businesses (26%, 34%, and 40% respectively). In total 1,653 surveys were completed across industry sectors such as Financial Services, Banking, Manufacturing and Construction, the Public Sector, Healthcare, Government, Distribution Services, Professional Services, Infrastructure Services, and Transportation. The results in this presentation are representative of findings from the U.S. respondents (300 surveys), and are compared to last year s results IDC 3

5 Where Is the Services Opportunity? In 2009/2010, in which areas does your organization plan to use or employ an external services provider for help with fulfilling your company's Green IT initiatives? Consolidation of data center(s) Measurement/monitoring of energy consumption Video conferencing Planning/design of a project or program Virtualization management (% of respondents) Respondents feel that they see the need for external help to grapple with an obvious energy reduction initiative Data Center Consolidation. A second major (and surprising) opportunity for a Services lead role belongs to Video Conferencing. Given the energy saving opportunity, and business transformation requirements to use video conferencing, respondents feel that their skills may be insufficient to implement the technology.
