2 College Statement and Statistics President Antonio Perez The Borough of Manhattan Community College () was established in 1963 and is the largest of CUNY's colleges. provides high-quality academic and career programs relevant to the needs, interests and aspirations of its students. The student body is drawn from the five boroughs of New York City and beyond. Career programs include the health sciences, business, computer science, video arts and technology, human services, corporate and cable communication and forensic science. These programs provide entry-level skills and excellent upward mobility opportunities for students. Valuable on-the-job training is provided for many students through the cooperative education and career placement programs. The liberal arts program, career programs and the business administration programs enable students to transfer to CUNY and other senior colleges. As a result of the 9/11 loss of 40 percent of its instructional capacity, was forced to establish several off-site educational centers to better meet the growing academic and professional demands of New York City. With the fall 2012 opening of the new Fiterman Hall, continues to support its off-campus academic programs on the Brooklyn and Lehman College campuses and in Inwood with Hostos Community College. has expanded its direct services to the corporate community with employee and workforce development programs. The college has become an integral resource and supportive partner in the redevelopment and rebuilding of Downtown Manhattan. 's campus growth during its 30-year location in Tribeca has seen it expand from the main campus at 199 Chambers St. to include the leased facility at 70 Murray St. and the construction of the new Fiterman Hall at 245 Greenwich St. This expansion of the physical facilities underscores CUNY's strategic support of and affirms the importance of the college's role in the University's Master Plan to provide the critical educational programs that meet the needs of New York City. The college and CUNY realize that with the three campus centers, will continue to operate with a significant space deficit. This space shortage creates increased internal traffic and use demands on 's main campus infrastructure at Chambers Street. Priority has been given to not only making the main campus more energy efficient but also to initiating modernization efforts to improve the under-designed mechanical and HVAC systems in the building. These energy - and space management - related projects can positively affect the college's learning and working environment and affect student retention and the quality of life on campus for everyone. Therefore, they have been given a high priority and have been added to the scheduled Chambers Street renovation. The units are well past their useful life and require more frequent maintenance. The original condensate drain piping is galvanized; rust frequently clogs the piping, and water backs up onto the floor, causing flooding that damages flooring and ceiling tiles. Funding is requested in four phases in anticipation of the long duration involved in replacing the fan coil units. Anticipated Completion: January 2017 (B) Ceiling Replacement This project will address issues of high building occupancy on campus. A recent egress study recommended installation of additional sprinklers throughout 199 Chambers St. to improve fire egress. This will be accompanied by replacement of the original 1-foot by 1-foot ceiling tiles and suspension system that have deteriorated because of age, wear and water leakage. A new 2-foot by 2-foot grid system will be installed. This work will be completed in phases since the building is fully occupied. The first phase will include floors one through three. Anticipated Completion: January 2016 Total Project Cost Funds to Complete Total Project Cost $1,500 Funds to Complete Note: (B) = Major Bonded Project, (R) = Minor Rehabilitation Project A = Acquisition, D = Design, C = Construction, E = Equipment
5 City Reso-A Requests FY 2014 (City Council and Borough Presidents) (Costs in thousands) Chambers St. Instructional Spaces Upgrade This project will respond to the college's current and projected space deficit and infrastructure needs. Various spaces will be reconfigured and reprogrammed to create additional classrooms and non-science instructional laboratories. Additionally, student study spaces will be improved, and faculty offices will be created. C $4,000 Ongoing Anticipated Completion: October 2015 HVAC Upgrades to IT Closets This project will install air-conditioning units for the college's 17 IT closets on each floor of the north and south towers at 199 Chambers St. These closets contain network equipment that operates 's College Computer Center that supports the instructional and administrative network and voice over IP system of the college. This equipment requires conditioned air 24 hours a day to ensure maximum performance. The required temperature for the operation of this equipment is not being met, and this poses a threat to equipment. DC $1,500 Anticipated Completion: August 2014 Replacement of Rooftop AC Unit This project will replace a 350-ton rooftop air-conditioning unit with a new, energy-efficient one. Located on the south tower penthouse, the unit has not functioned for years because its 400-amp electrical supply was diverted to power trailers on West Street in the aftermath of 9/11. The R-11 refrigerant used by this AC unit has been discontinued because of its CFC rating, and the unit has reached its life expectancy. The new equipment will permit the college to provide minimal AC service on weekends during the summer when the primary unit has been shut down; this will provide energy savings. Anticipated Completion: September 2014 Reso-A Request FY 2014 Total DC $2,000 Note: (B) = Major Bonded Project, (R) = Minor Rehabilitation Project A = Acquisition, D = Design, C = Construction, E = Equipment
