18 Smart Cities & Communities Initiative General Objective: Accelerate development and deployment of integrated energy, transport and ICT solutions at local level to serve EU climate/energy targets Ultimate aim: Transform a number of European cities How: - provide funding for selected large-scale demonstration projects - prepare for scale-up through focused horizontal activities (capturing lessons learned, identifying needs for regulation & standards, harmonising approaches to data collection, formatting and measurement, etc.) Timing: From 2014; plan to announce in the form of a Communication in July 2012

19 Smart Cities & Communities Initiative what s new? Seeks to break down silos between the energy, transport and ICT sectors Focus on innovation through integration of technologies/ business models rather than research into new technologies A coordinated call for proposals (across energy, transport and ICT programmes in FP7) to be launched in July 2012 in order to prepare the communities for a full-scale initiative after 2014 Although the overall goal is to serve EU climate/energy targets, expect progress elsewhere, e.g., interoperability of service infrastructures, open data, harmonized metrics, etc.

20 How might a Smart Cities project look like? strong industry consortium: technology partners and key service providers from the energy, transport & ICT sectors together with cities demonstration of integrated novel technologies in at least two large cities commitment to open standards that prevent lock-in and foster competition evidence of scale-up and replication potential within the city and in other cities, solutions should be transferable and deliver EU added value
