Superfast fibre Connecting communities to the future
2 Our vision of a superfast UK is becoming a reality
The UK Government has an ambition for the country to have the best broadband network in the EU by This is a hugely ambitious target and the discussions around funding it have raged for years. Rather than debate the issue, we decided to invest 2.5 billion into the deployment of a fibre broadband infrastructure for the UK. More than 11 million homes already have access to this infrastructure, well on the way to achieving our target of around two-thirds of UK premises by spring By then, something like 7 million children will also be able to learn at the speed of light, at home and at school. Which leaves the final third properties in rural areas that are hard-toreach, or simply not commercially viable with private funding alone. 830 million of public funding has been set aside to complete the final third. We re in discussions with BDUK (the UK Government s broadband delivery authority) and with the devolved nations of Scotland and Wales to see how we can work together to help achieve this vision. More than 11 million homes already have access Investing 2.5 billion 3
Unrivalled in every respect experience: We re the UK s primary infrastructure supplier. Our heritage stretches back more than 130 years, to the days when the telephone was invented. We ve been installing superfast fibre at home for over three years, honing our skills as we do so. technology: We spent years learning from international deployments of superfast fibre. We ve incorporated the best of that learning in our superfast fibre rollout; utilising only tried and tested technology. speeds: Hundreds of thousands of people are already experiencing download speeds of up to 80Mbit/s over our superfast fibre infrastructure and, in some areas, up to 300Mbit/s. It s also the case that some people are able to upload at up to 30Mbit/s the fastest in the UK. These speeds are more than adequate for streaming high definition TV, video conferencing and online media sharing. We know that our fibre will go much faster, so the future is covered. 4 Our network is open to all UK communications providers. This enables them to deliver a wide range of services that provide consumers and businesses with real choice, and so promotes healthy competition. 132 million project 4,000 jobs Working with local authorities We re working with Cornwall Council on a 132 million project to bring superfast fibre to around 90% of homes and more than 10,000 businesses in the county and The Isles of Scilly by This project alone will generate an estimated 4,000 jobs and safeguard 2,000 others. The key point here is partnership. This is a model that works. We shared the cost to enable Cornwall to build its future. We re ready to do the same with other local authorities throughout the UK.
25,000 engineers Engineers everywhere We employ 25,000 engineers, based all over the country. They visit around 11,000 homes and offices each day, to install new lines, upgrade existing lines and fix faulty ones. They also climb the equivalent of Mount Everest on a daily basis, to maintain our 3.5 million telephone poles. Between them, our engineers can boast over a million years experience on the infrastructure front. 94 games locations 130 Years experience 25,000 connections WE HAVE THE KNOWHOW Connecting hard-to-reach places is tough to do. From digging through hills and under river beds, the physical challenges of deploying fibre in rural locations and conservation areas are nothing new to us. We ve already done it with copper! Facilitating the greatest show on earth From the Olympic Park at Stratford where we provided 25,000 connections our superfast fibre infrastructure allowed millions of people in the UK and billions more around the world to see all the live action at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It served 94 Games locations and will provide a legacy that will encourage further regeneration. The experience we gained from providing superfast fibre to the 2,818 flats at the Athletes Village on the Olympic Park is already proving invaluable in our nationwide rollout, particularly with regard to deployments at new residential developments and future social housing projects. Superfast fibre is lighting up the UK 11 million homes right now and around two-thirds of UK premises by spring Our ambition is to work with communities to provide superfast fibre to 90% of Britain by
More reasons to choose Openreach Big is beautiful Our infrastructure already provides a complete network covering virtually the entire country, via connections from homes and offices to 5,000 local telephone exchanges. It supports 28 million telephone lines. People use it to make 320 million voice calls and 400 million data calls every day. If we laid all our copper and fibre cabling end-to-end, it would encircle the world more than 3,000 times! Under the bonnet At the centre of Openreach, you ll find technology-watchers, forecasters, planners, infrastructure designers and architects the behindthe-scenes heroes who make certain that our infrastructure will satisfy tomorrow s demand for bandwidth, which some pundits say will at least quadruple by Open by name, open by nature The true open access we provide supports a vibrant communications industry in the UK. Healthy competition helps to keep a lid on retail prices and people are free to choose the right deal for them, from the widest possible range of communications suppliers. Our infrastructure supports 28 million phone lines Up to 250 times faster than standard broadband Putting our customers first We re responsible for maintaining and improving the infrastructure that supports the largest High Street communication brands. We have over 500 communications provider customers million voice calls and 400 million data calls every day We support them all through a 2,700-strong service organisation and 24x7 helpdesks. When something does go wrong, our customers get promises on fix times for their residential, business and government customers. Relentless innovation Where we can t deploy fibre using underground cable typically due to the cost and disruption of digging we use telephone poles instead, which is an innovation in itself. We ve developed Broadband Enabling Technology for areas where people have to make do with dial-up speeds or are unable go online at all. It delivers services at up to 2Mbit/s. Developments in passive optical networking over fibre will enable our customers to deliver their services up to 250 times faster than with standard broadband! 6 Here are some of the communications providers we work with, and there are lots more.
What they say Superfast broadband allows us to order supplies online and carry out internet-based research far more quickly. Now new, state-ofthe-art cloud computing applications, such as back-up of our files and records online, are much more viable. Tristan Kimber, Upholsterer We re the first superfast pub in Cornwall. Because we offer free Wi-Fi, people can experience superfast broadband first hand, while enjoying a pint of real ale. Our customers have been blown away by it. Michael Owen, Britannia Hotel
Key facts We re investing 2.5 billion in our national rollout of superfast fibre. 11 million homes can connect to superfast fibre today, and two-thirds of UK premises by spring Downloads of up to 300Mbit/s and uploads of 30Mbit/s are now available the fastest speeds around. 25,000 engineers nationwide, plus technology-watchers, forecasters, planners, designers and architects. 2,700-strong service organisation, 24x7 service desks, promises on fix times. Official infrastructure provider for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. Every 3 months we increase the reach of superfast fibre to as many premises as there are in the whole of Singapore. Around 90% of homes and 10,000 businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to get superfast fibre by Passive optical networking over fibre will be up to 250 times faster than standard broadband!
