3 Why do we need green IT? ICT sector Accounts for 8-10% of the EU s electricity consumption and up to 4% of its carbon emissions. Can save up to 600 billion & decrease 15% of carbon emissions in 2020 by becoming energy efficient (The Climate Group). Cities contribute to 70% of the world s greenhouse gases (GHG), where +50% World Population lives. If 100 of the world s largest cities embark on a low-carbon development path, global GHG could decreased around 10 percent a year (World Bank).
