4 International Energy Agency Founded in 1974 Formed in wake of 1973 oil embargo with mission to promote member country energy security -- autonomous agency of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 28 member countries Asia Pacific: Australia, Japan, Republic of Korea and New Zealand North America: United States, Canada Europe: Austria, Belgium, Czech Rep, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom European Commission also participates in the work of the IEA Chile and Estonia are in the process of accession to become members of the IEA Headquarters: Paris Decision-making body: Governing Board Consists of member country representatives Under the Governing Board, several committees are focusing on each area Secretariat: Staff of around 240, mainly energy experts and statisticians from its member OECD/IEA 2014

8 The IEA has strengthened close cooperation with its key Partner countries - more than half of global energy consumption now takes place outside the IEA region Brazil Cooperation on the global Hydropower Roadmap and 2013 World Energy Outlook Special Focus on Brazil have greatly contributed to deepening bilateral relations. China China s cooperation with the IEA has deepened with close collaboration on publications such as the China Wind Roadmap and recommendations to China s gas market report. OECD/IEA 2013

Yes, through Energy Technology RD&D Collaboration In 1974 the IEA established a structure for governments to carry out collaborative RD&D to conserve existing resources develop alternative energy sources improve energy efficiency Since then, 80 multilateral technology initiatives (Implementing Agreements) have been created, with 41 currently operating First IAs focused on coal now the focus is on renewables IAs are the core of a network of senior experts the IEA Energy Technology Network
