13 Collaborative Innovation: Building the future of nanoscience It is a journey of discovery into the world of atomic nano-level R&D. The center will be simply the world s most advanced, state-of-the-art nano-facility. John Kelly III, SVP & Director of Research IBM constructs the building, ETH Zurich rents for a minimum of 10 years 10,000 sq. ft. clean-room facilities Noise-free laboratories $30 million in new equipment Both joint and independent research projects Scheduled to open in

15 Nanowires the ultimate semiconducting transistor Silicon nanowire are promising candidates as the smallest transistors in the integrated circuits of the future. Nanowires are very small vertical crystalline 200nm 10nm 2nm The aim is to create even smaller building blocks for more efficient computers, for example for use in mobile devices.

16 Aquasar sustainable supercomputing Challenge: Exploding energy costs in datacenters with cooling accounting for up to 50% thereof Aquasar A novel kind of water-cooled supercomputer whose revolutionary cooling system mimics the vessels and capillaries of our circulatory system Cooling with 60 o C hot water enables dramatic savings in cooling energy and yields high-grade waste heat suitable for direct reuse in space heating

IBM Research - Zurich EDISON: Powered by the wind The EDISON research consortium is a Denmark-based collaborative to develop a smart grid infrastructure. It will enable the large-scale adoption of electric vehicles powered by wind energy.
