4 Achievements of EUMEDCONNECT regarding ARN Connectivity growth : In 2002, ARN had a total of 20 Mbps of international connectivity Today, ARN has 195 Mbps : 84% is directly provided by Eumedconnect Increase of International traffic Direct link with other NRENs : our international connectivity was provided through commercial ISPs The benefits are : faster connect speeds and better operation performance than using the commercial Internet Costs : In 2002, Internet capacity charges from commercial providers were at least 4000$/Mbps/Month, 1000$/Mbps/month in 2007 Today, Eumedconnect capacity costs about 300 Euro/Mbps/Month

5 Achievements of EUMEDCONNECT regarding ARN Moving to the e-infrastructure applications : Initiating the National Grid Initiative DZ-GRID in 2006 which was fostered by EUMEDGRID project achievements Starting national e-learning operation which have many cooperative actions with European parties (Tempus, bilateral actions, FP7 in the future) Improve the national network in terms of : building infrastructure and introducing and deploying new services Training & others events : More qualified technical staff Updated about network technologies Shared experiences Beneficiate of knowledge of others advanced NRENs

7 Tackling R&E Digital Divide: Connect. Communicate. Collaborate A sizeable number of countries on the wrong side of digital divide encounter significant difficulty to access cutting-edge R&E applications and services over their infrastructure. - Project actions, such as EU-sponsored regional projects that aim to address the digital divide for example EUMEDCONNECT have achieved an unprecedented impact in easing the digital divide and should continue EARNEST Study 2007

8 EARNEST Study Findings Average GEANT2 (34) and EUMED (7) NRENs international bandwidth is 12Gb/s and 70Mb/s respectively (more than two orders of magnitude disparity) The average GEANT2 (34) and EUMED (7) NRENs international bandwidth per user is 6kb/s and 28b/s respectively (more than two orders of magnitude disparity). The last 20 or so NRENs are expected to encounter significant difficulty to access cutting-edge R&E applications and services over their international connection The EARNEST Foresight Study

12 What have we learnt today? Connect. Communicate. Collaborate R&E networking in the Mediterranean is becoming well established thanks to: Pioneering investment by the European Commission Commitments by Mediterranean NRENs/governments to support EUMEDCONNECT and national networks User community starting to rely on the infrastructure The region s telecommunications markets remain challenging: Competition is developing and regulations reforming, but slowly and patchily Telecoms investment in alternative bandwidth services remains low Commercial Internet services are developing but research networks are and will remain essential for high end, non-commercial services

13 Is MED e-infrastructure sustainable? Connect. Communicate. Collaborate MED partners views: stimulated to expand national networks (e.g. Jordan, Morocco) Some are reasonably well resourced (e.g. Algeria) All interested in further engagement with their user communities All value EU support and partnerships All concerned about the affordability of regional e-infrastructure without some continued EU funding Regional e-infrastructure remains essential to combat the R&E Digital Divide

14 EUMEDCONNECT2 Plans Connect. Communicate. Collaborate EUMEDCONNECT expected to end Q2 2008, replacement project (EUMEDCONNECT2) planned Tendering for EUMEDCONNECT2 network to start shortly EUMEDCONNECT2 plans: Provide higher capacity, more cost effective infrastructure Active promotion of network for FP7 and other research projects, tele-medecine and environmental applications Extended coverage to additional Mediterranean and Gulf NRENs Project managed with the CAMREN consortium Funding from EC, MED partners and others Longer term sustainability plans to be developed Long term approach to tackling Digital Divide needed
