2 Europe s Energy challenge The EU's Energy Union strategy is built on 5 dimensions: 1. Security, solidarity and trust 2. A fully-integrated internal energy market 3. Energy efficiency 4. Climate action - decarbonising the economy 5. Research, innovation and competitiveness Europe s Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan): Brings an answer to the 5th dimension of the Energy Union. Has 10 Key Actions identified in September 2015 that address the whole innovation chain, from basic research to market uptake. Learn more about the SET Plan here:

3 Why the ETIP SNET? Europe s energy transition is key to the European and global goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and keeping global temperature increases below 2 C. To ensure this, more renewable and other carbon-neutral energy sources will be introduced into Europe s electricity, heating and cooling, and transport systems. The energy networks, especially stronger and smarter electricity grids interfaced with heating, gas and transport networks, play a key role in the energy transition while supporting security of supply and affordability. ETIP SNET aims to make sure Europe's Research and Innovation facilitates all energy customers and market actors to rely on optimally integrated networks, systems and markets.

4 Why ETIP SNET? European Technology & Innovation Platforms (ETIPs) have been created by the European Commission in the framework of the new Integrated Roadmap Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) by bringing together a multitude of stakeholders and experts from the energy sector. The ETIP Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET) role is to guide Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) to support Europe's energy transition, more specifically, its mission is to: Set-out a vision for RD&I for Smart Networks for Energy Transition and engage stakeholders in this vision. Prepare and update the Strategic Research and Innovation Roadmap. Report on the implementation of RD&I activities at European, national/regional and industrial levels. Provide input to the SET Plan action 4 which addresses the technical challenges raised by the transformation of the energy system. Identify innovation barriers, notably related to regulation and financing. Develop enhanced knowledge-sharing mechanisms that help bring RD&I results to deployment. Prepare consolidated stakeholder views on Research and Innovation to European Energy Policy initiatives.

6 How is ETIP SNET organised? In order to have a wide representation of stakeholders and offer dynamic and efficient operation, ETIP SNET is organised as follows: The Governing Board (GB) composed of over 30 people steers the platform where stakeholder associations are represented and liaises with the European Commission. The Executive Committee (Exco) composed of 9 selected Governing Board representatives: the ETIP SNET Chairs, the 2 Vice-Chairs and the Working Groups Chairs. 5 Working Groups where experts participate and provide input to the Governing Board on various topics. ETIP SNET has five Working Groups and a National Stakeholders Group which you can take part in: WG1 Reliable, economic and efficient smart grid system Addresses business and technology trends contributing to the overall energy system optimization at affordable investment and operation costs. Vicente Gonzalez, REE - ENTSO-E WG2 Storage technologies and sector interfaces Addresses the technological and market developments related to energy storage solutions to ensure the required level of flexibility for the transmission and distribution of electricity. Cristiana La Marca, ENEL - EASE WG3 Flexible Generation Considers the latest business and technology trends to address the needs for flexibility in the framework of an integrated energy system. Michael Ladwig, GE - EUTurbines WG4 Digitisation of the electricity system and customer participation Addresses the use and impact of the Information and Communication Technologies as a pervasive tool along the entire value chain of the power generation, transportation and use. Maher Chebbo, SAP - ESMIG WG5 Innovation implementation in the business environment Adopts a helicopter view on R&I projects and promotes their uptake by the industry so as to ensure Europe s energy transition; promotes research. Emmanouil Kakaras, MHPSE - EPPSA NSCG National Stakeholders Coordination Group Provides a sounding board and exchange platform for national R&I stakeholders in the area of energy systems and networks.
