8 Why Save Energy? In 2006, data centers consumed 61B KWH of electricity at a cost of $4.5B (twice as much as in 2000). EPA predicts that by 2012, US data centers will consume 100B KWH of electricity at a cost of $7.4B. Cooling in a typical data center consumes more than half of the total power used. It simply works better. 8

10 The TGG Metrics EPA and The Green Grid (TGG) are developing standards and metrics for data center energy efficiency EPA will have ratings, similar to Energy Star, to quantify energy efficiency in the data centers TGG is developing data center infrastructure efficiency metrics, called DCiE and PUE These metrics will help Data Center managers and designers compare actual results measure progress in their installations It simply works better. 10

22 RoHS Regulations RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances On July 1, 2006 EU RoHS became effective. On March 1, 2007 China RoHS became effective. China RoHS modeled after EU RoHS, but has major differences US is following lead It simply works better. 22
