Delivery Date 1. ICTs role and roadmap for Smart Water Management 1.1 Developing National Drivers: There is an immediate need to develop national and sector specific drivers to adopt ICT in SWM. The potential role, use cases, and impact of ICT in SWM needs to be collected, analyzed, and documented on local, regional, and international levels. Collection and documentation of information on local, global and regional initiatives, and best practices; in Smart Water Management and its related activities Identification of potential barriers in the use of ICTs to achieve water sustainability in countries. Analysis of the documented local, global and regional initiatives in Smart Water Management and its related activities Development of a strategy document which reflects the role of ICTs in Smart Water management. The document should include case studies from different regions and potential use cases of ICT in SWM. 5 - 2 - SWM-O Standardization gaps, KPIs, metrics and efficient ICT and Smart Water Management 1.2 Building a Sustainable Smart Water Ecosystem Building a sustainable smart water ecosystem entails the effective incremental deployment and integration of SWM ICT systems and policies in different relevent sectors and industries. That entails the development of accurate targeted SWM architectures, and specifications in order to develop a sustainable future proof roadmap. Development of a stakeholders' list that will include key stakeholders involved in the area of ICTs and smart water management (government, industry, academia etc). The potential relevent sectors include; environment, agriculture, energy, ICT, irrigation & water resources management, and public administration\municipalities. Documentation and analysis of the technical specifications and architectures of SWM, and its related integration\interoperability issues. Development of an ICT standardization roadmap for SWM. Development of an ICT strategic incremental roadmap document for SWM national deployments (in different sectors) & its related needed policy intergation. The document should also help states to foster strategies and best practices related to policies and standards to help cities and rural areas deliver smart water management services including the optimization of the use of scarce water and build resilience to climate change across national boundaries. 2.1 Technical Report on Standardization Activities and Gaps for SWM Developing direct connections with current standardization activities in SG5 and other relevent SGs is recommended for realizing the FG SWM preset objectives. An initial screening of SG-5 Study Questions and activities indicate recommendations related to emissions, e-waste, and energy consumption. No account of specific Study Questions dedicated to SWM or water footprint. Integration with specific SG 5 and other relevent SGs questions should be coherently and systematically be conducted. Integration with Q14/5 (e.g. in developing low cost sustaiable infrastructre for measurments and monitoring systems for SWM applications) Integration with Q15/5 (e.g in invetigating how ICT and standards be used and developed to be more effective in helping communities to adapt to climate change especially in developing countries and particularly in key sectors such as water management) Integration with Q16/5 (e.g. study additional effects of using standards on environmental assessment practices in the ICT sector when reducing its environmental impact; specifically in effects related to the water footprint, in additon to inter-alia Greenhouse Gas emissions and energy consumption) Integration with Q17/5 (e.g. in developing energy effiecient hydropower generation systems)
6 - 3 - SWM-O-0002 Integration with Q18/5 (e.g. developing methodologies for the assessment of environmental impact of ICT in relation to water footprint) SG 11,and SG13 SG15 and SG Technical Report on KPIs for Smart Water Management Assessing the impact of the use of ICT in SWM in addition to the reverse impact of SWM on the socio-economic indicators of member states assists in the development of long term sustainable strategies and targets the realization of positive environmental, social, and economic impacts. Development of a technical report on the KPIs to assess the impact of the use of ICT in smart water management Development of a technical report on the KPIs to assessimpact of the use of smart water management on the socio-economic indicators of states and regions Development of a set of methodologies for estimating the impact of ICTs on improving water conservation, interoerability and achieving economies of scale 3. Communications, liaisons and members' engagement 3.1 Organizations active in the area of Smart Water Management Establish formal communications, and liaisons ITU relevent SGs and FGs in addition to organizations, and fora active in SWM. Disseminate and share information and technologies used in smart water management especially in developing countries. Invite different stakeholders from administrations, academia, NGOs, multinationals to share their practices. 3.2 Communication and Promotion Plans (webpage, social media, events, etc) Developing white papers and activity reports for achieving global, regional, and local interaction in a simplified and appealing format will help to address the standardization gap and the needed orientation of non-ict experts specifically from the interacting relevent sectors (agriculture sector, water resources management sector,...etc.) Development of a whitepaper\guide on the potential uses and impact of ICT for SWM Development of a whitepaper\guide on the role of ITU-T in standardization and the role of SG-5 in addressing environmental related issues and in specific water management. Development of a social media campaign for FG SWM and SG-5 related activites dessimentating key results obtained to the public.
