2 Introduction Adoption of information technology has the potential to deliver a revolutionary impact on the public transport sector. It can help public transport authorities and operators to improve operational efficiency, enhance relationship with customer, integrate with emerging mobility players and services, and manage cyber-security, governance and organisation issues, etc. The public transport sector must foster digital innovation and be bold in trying out innovative solutions. Digitalisation is not an issue for the future. It is already happening and the public transport sector needs to embrace it, to take advantage of the numerous opportunities it offers as well as preparing itself for its role in the future mobility market. For example, personal mobile devices, such as the smart phone, are and will remain key in terms of ticketing, journey planning and inter-modality. India s urban population will reach 590 million by There would be at least 60 cities with a million plus population, at present the figure stands at 42. It is imperative to develop new cities or redesign existing cities to accommodate the burgeoning population. It is believed that the information and communication technologies are essential for the development of economy and the society in the current days. Government of India latest demonetisation drive also create an opportunity for public transport agencies to move towards cashless travel and mobile ticketing. Government of India has planned to setup 109 Smart Cities which include Integrated Public Transport Plan. Smart Cities cannot be built without Smart Public Transport. There is need for faster adoption of technologies for transport authorities and operators. Why Bengaluru as Host City? 6 Practical Information Registration: Registration to the Seminar on 2nd UITP India Seminar on IT Solutions for Public Transport is open to UITP members and non-members. Please send the enclosed registration form duly filled-in by post or fax or by D. C. Prakash, Advisor, UITP India Regional Office, Bengaluru. A substitute colleague will be accepted provided the organizers receive written notice. Delegates who wish to receive an invitation for their VISA application are requested first to pay the participation fee and send a copy of their passport to the attention of the personnel indicated below. Request for letter of invitations may be sent along with the registration form.
