IBM Data Center Networking Customer Value CHOICE Best fit from a wide choice of Networking Products Multi network vendor maintenance and support with a global reach One global company simplifies procurement and reduces costs Standards based solutions reducing interoperability issues Choice for Networking Primary Partners SIMPLICITY Integrated manageable infrastructures EXPERTISE Solution innovation skills Operations process simplification with integrated software Evolve SAN to FCOE with integrated server/ storage / network tools Dynamic Infrastructure management enables the network to adapt to changes in servers and storage. Integrated Data Center Solutions Reduced time to deployment with integrated products and solutions Leadership in emerging VM mobility standards enabling choice Interoperability testing between servers, storage, network and mgmt Industry-leading Services and Support System Integration Data Center Networking enables innovative Dynamic Infrastructure solutions
Industry Analyst - Gartner Large data centers are becoming increasingly dependent on the network layer. Requirements for emerging data centers can involve thousands of Gigabit Ethernet server connections, with a requirement for a 10 gigabit (Gb) interconnection between the switches. An individual core switch must support many hundreds of gigabit connections and have dense, wire-speed, low latency 10Gb capabilities. Switches need to have enough combined port density to allow switch interconnection without seriously reducing the number of devices connected to the switch. We are finding the high-end market stratified, with vendors such as Brocade, Cisco and Juniper Networks emerging as the leading players in high-capacity, scalable architectures. Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise LAN (Global) 2009
Globally, systems & infrastructure are reaching a breaking point Explosion of data, transactions, and digitally-aware devices strains IT infrastructure and operations. Exponential growth in communications and services exposes bandwidth limitations. Supply inefficiencies and demand spikes tax energy and utility systems. 4
Data Center transformation goes beyond Server isation Spending (US$B) $300 $250 $200 $150 $100 $50 $0 Power and Admin costs keep rising +Physical Server Installed Base (Millions) Complexity adds to cost and risk Firewal l Server s Physical Server Installed Base (Millions) Power and Cooling Costs Server Mgt and Admin Costs New Server Spending Routers Switche s Special Purpose Appliances ization Management Gap Director y Servers Source: IDC, May 2006 Data Servers Application Servers Web Servers Mainframes Server virtualization by itself cannot reduce costs, improve service and manage risk Rising network and storage bottlenecks, together with management complexity, reduce the efficiencies gained through virtualization. Data Center evolution need to consider all aspects of the infrastructure especially the network and its management Storage File/Print Servers
Dynamic Infrastructure helps business grow while reducing costs BUSINESS NEED DRIVEN Infrastructure available on-demand and scales with business needs in the right time BEST-FIT Modular, Standards based architectures and technologies allowing the choice of the best of breed vendor for a given purpose Application Application Server Application Server Server Servers SERVICE MANAGEMENT Blades Storage Networks Physical Environment SMP Servers Clients ization & Management Storage Systems DECOUPLED Infrastructure that is decoupled from business logic does not get in the way of your time to value EFFICIENT Automated, workloadoptimized with virtual resource mobility and life cycle management that includes servers, storage and networks Cloud Cells Network Hardware
