VMware vsphere 4.1 continues to transform the x86 IT infrastructures into the most efficient, shared, on-demand utility. It offers built-in availability, scalability, and security services for all applications and simple proactive, automated management. vsphere 4.1 provides new and enhanced features in the areas of: Installation and deployment Storage Network Availability Management Platform enhancements Partner ecosystem VMware vsphere 4.1 is also the version that is required to enable some IBM System x ex5 industry-leading and differentiated features: MAX5 enablement. 8-socket (x3850 X5 x 2) enablement. IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager TM plug-in for VMware vsphere client. (This item is not specific to ex5.) VMware vsphere 4.1 continues to deliver the levels of performance and scalability of vsphere 4.0 with: Support for up to 64 cores per server Support for up to 1 TB of physical memory per server Support for up to 255 GB of RAM per virtual machine Support for up to 320 virtual machines per server The System x3950 M2 is the reference platform for vsphere scalability and was the platform used to enable the scalability features that can be found in vsphere 4.0 and 4.1. vsphere 4.1 mirrors the editions released with vsphere 4.0. These offerings help meet the needs of Small and Medium Business (SMB), Mid-Market (MM), and Large Enterprise clients. 2 vsphere Essentials and Essentials Plus editions (bundles) for SMB/MM businesses and large distributed enterprises (such as branch offices). vsphere Standard edition at a new, lower price point for simple consolidation. vsphere Advanced for high availability at a midrange price point, helping provide consolidation plus availability. vsphere Enterprise for large-scale implementations needing consolidation, availability, and manageability. vsphere Enterprise Plus at a new top price point, providing tools to help with consolidation, availability, and manageability. Enterprise Plus also includes Distributed Switch and Host Profiles. Note: vsphere 4.1 will keep the same part numbers as vsphere 4.0. However, the name of each part number will be updated. vsphere 4.0 will still be available. Clients who still want to purchase 4.0 can use the 4.1 part number. They will be able to download both 4.0 and 4.1 (their choice) from their VMware.com software portal. vsphere 4.1 includes features that had been previously sold separately (depending on the vsphere Edition): VMware vmotion VMware Hot Add VMware Fault Tolerance (FT) VMware Data Recovery VMware vshield Zones VMware vnetwork Distributed Switch (VDS) VMware Host Profiles VMware vcenter Heartbeat The following offerings remain the same: VMware View offerings VMware vcenter offerings VMware Site Recovery Manager VMware Lab Manager VMware LCM VMware Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) VMware Data Recovery Manager is available as a stand-alone individual offering on top of VMware Standard only. VMware vcenter Heartbeat ensures seamless failover and failback of the vcenter Server, providing reliable disaster recovery for vcenter Server in local and remote locations. VMware vsphere 4.1 continues a support model targeted to small environments. These new bundles are designed to enable IT administrators and decision makers at SMBs to easily deploy a VMware virtual environment and quickly reap its transformative benefits: VMware Essentials All-inclusive package includes licenses for three physical servers (up to two processors each) and a license for a central management server. This package cannot be decoupled or combined and components cannot be used with other vsphere editions. Includes Update Manager, VC Agent, 4-way SMP, VMware ESXi or ESX 4.0, and vcenter Server for Essentials. VMware Essentials Plus Includes all the functionality of Essentials plus Data Recovery and High Availability. Planned availability date September 3, 2010 Description New installation and deployment features: Removal of vsphere client from ESX/ESXi builds: For ESX and ESXi, the vsphere client is available for download from the VMware Web site. It is no longer included with builds of ESX and ESXi, which reduces the overall build size. After installation of ESX and ESXi, users are directed to the download page on the VMware Web site to get the matching vsphere client for that release. The vsphere client is still packaged with builds of vcenter Server. Scripted install for ESXi: Scripted installation of ESXi to local and remote disks allows rapid deployment of ESXi to many machines. You can start the scripted installation with a CD-ROM drive or over the network using PXE booting. You cannot use the scripted installation to install ESXi to a USB device. New storage features: iscsi ibft boot support: vsphere 4.1 allows ESXi to boot from iscsi using ibft. Broadcom is supported. Storage performance statistics: vsphere 4.1 offers enhanced visibility into storage throughput and latency of hosts and virtual machines, and aids in troubleshooting storage performance issues. NFS statistics are now available in vcenter Server performance charts, as well as esxtop. New statistics for virtual machine for VMDK and data store provide virtual machine insight. All statistics are available through the VMware SDK. Storage I/O control: This feature provides quality of server capabilities for storage I/O in the form of I/O shares and limits that are enforced across all virtual machines accessing a datastore regardless of which host they are running on. Using storage I/O control, vsphere administrators can ensure that the most important virtual machines get adequate I/O resources even in time of congestion. iscsi hardware offloads: vsphere 4.1 enables 10 Gb iscsi hardware offloads (Broadcom 57711) and 1 Gb iscsi hardware offloads (Broadcom 5709). 8 Gb Fibre Channel support: vsphere 4.1 supports 8 Gb Fibre Channel storage arrays. You can deploy ESX and ESXi with 8 Gb end-to-end Fibre Channel SANs. New networking features: Network I/O control: Traffic-management controls allow flexible partitioning of physical NIC bandwidth between different traffic types, including virtual machine, vmotion, FT, and IP storage traffic (vnetwork Distributed Switch only). IPv6 enhancements: Ipv6 ESX supports Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) with manual keying. Load-based teaming: vsphere 4.1 allows dynamic adjustment of the teaming algorithm so the load is always balanced across a team of physical adapters on a vnetwork Distributed Switch. 4 New availability features: VMware HA Healthcheck status: HA provides an ongoing healthcheck facility to ensure that the required cluster configuration is met at all times. Deviations from the required configuration result in an event or alarm on the cluster within the vcenter Server inventory. VMware HA operational status: The HA dashboard in the vsphere client provides a new detailed window called Cluster Operational Status. It displays more information about the current HA operational status, including the specific status and errors for each host in the HA cluster. Fault tolerance (FT) enhancements: FT virtual machines are now fully interoperable with DRS when EVC is enabled in the cluster, allowing DRS to place FT primary VMs and load balance FT primary and secondary VMs. An FT-specific versioning-control mechanism ensures that hosts are fully compatible with running FT primary and secondary VMs, which eliminate the need to rely on ESX build number consistency. vsphere 4.1 differentiates between events that are logged for a primary VM from those that are logged for its secondary VM, and reports why a host might not support FT. In addition you can disable VMware HA when FT virtual machines are deployed in a cluster. Concurrent VMware data recovery sessions: vsphere 4.1 provides the ability to concurrently manage multiple VMware data recovery appliances. vstorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP) enhancements: VADP now offers VSS quiescing support for Microsoft Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 servers. This enables application-consistent backup and restore operations for Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 applications. VMware vcenter Heartbeat: This new feature protects the vcenter server and its database against hardware, OS, application, and network downtime. It provides a seamless failover and failback for the vcenter Server. This feature provides reliable disaster recovery for the vcenter Server in both local and remote locations. There are hardware configuration dependencies and it automatically detects standard vcenter components during installation, providing instant monitoring and protection. New management features: Access to virtual machine serial ports over the network: You can redirect virtual machine serial number ports over a standard network link using vsphere 4.1. This enables solutions such as third-party virtual serial port concentrators for virtual machine serial console management or monitoring. vcenter Converter Hyper-V import: vcenter Converter allows users to point to a Hyper-V machine. Converter displays the virtual machines running on the Hyper- V system, and the users can select a powered-off virtual machine to import to a VMware destination. Enhancements to Host Profiles: Host Profiles provides flexibility by allowing you to roll out administrator password changes in vsphere 4.1. Unattended authentication in vsphere Management Assistant (vma): vma 4.1 offers improved authentication capability, including integration with Active Directory and command line interface commands to configure the connection. Updated deployment environment in vsphere Management Assistant (vma): The updated deployment environment in vma 4.1 is fully compatible with vma 4.0. A significant change is the transition from RHEL to CentOS. vcenter Orchestrator: vcenter Orchestrator 4.1 provides a client and server for 64-bit installations, with an optional 32-bit client. The performance of the Orchestrator server on 64-bit installations is greatly enhanced, as compared to running the server on a 32-bit machine. Improved support for handing recalled patches in vcenter Update Manager: Update Manager 4.1 immediately sends critical notifications about recalled ESX and related patches. In addition, Update Manager prevents you from installing a recalled patch that you might have already downloaded. This feature also helps you identify hosts where recalled patches might already be installed. 5 DRS virtual machine host affinity rules: DRS provides the ability to set constraints that restrict placement of a virtual machine to a subset of hosts in a cluster. This feature is useful for enforcing host-based ISV licensing models, as well as keeping sets of virtual machines on different racks or blade systems for availability reasons. Memory compression: Compressed memory is a new level of the memory hierarchy, between RAM and disk. Slower than RAM, but much faster than disk, this feature improves the performance of virtual machines when memory is under contention, because less virtual memory is swapped to disk as a result. vmotion enhancements: In vsphere 4.1 vmotion enhancements significantly reduce the overall time to host evacuations, with support for more simultaneous virtual machine migrations and faster individual virtual machine migrations. The result is a performance improvement of up to 8x for an individual virtual machine migration, and support for four to eight simultaneous vmotion migrations per host depending on the vmotion network adapter (1 GbE or 10 GbE respectively). ESX/ESXi Active Directory integration: Integration with Microsoft Active Directory allows seamless user authentication for ESX/ESXi. You can maintain users and groups in Active Directory for centralized user management and you can assign privileges to users or groups on ESX/ESXi hosts. In vsphere 4.1, integration with Active Directory allows you to roll out permission rules to hosts using Host Profiles. Configuring USB device pass-through from an ESX/ESXi host to a virtual machine: Virtual machines can be configured to use USB devices that are connected to the ESX host on which the virtual machine is running. You can use vmotion to migrate a virtual machine that has connected USB devices. Enhanced vmotion compatibility: vsphere 4.1 includes an AMD Opteron Generation 3 without 3DNow! EVC mode that prepares clusters for vmotion compatibility with future AMD processors. EVC also provides numerous usability improvements, including the display of EVC modes for virtual machines, more timely error detection, better error messages, and a reduced need to restart virtual machines. New partner ecosystem features: Enablement of Intel Xeon Processor 7500 Series, Intel Xeon Processor 5600 Series, and Intel Xeon Processor 3600 Series: vsphere 4.1 supports the new Intel Xeon Processor 7500 Series, Intel Xeon Processor 5600 Series, and Intel Xeon Processor 3600 Series. Support includes Enhanced vmotion Capability (EVC) capabilities. Enablement of AMD Opteron Processor 4000 Series and AMD Opteron Processor 6000 Series: vsphere 4.1 supports the AMD Opteron Processor 4000 Series and AMD Opteron 6000 Series. Support includes Enhanced vmotion Compatibility (EVC) capabilities. For more information on previous processor families supported by Enhanced vmotion, see Enhanced vmotion Compatibility (EVC) processor support (KB ). vcenter Update Manager support for provisioning, patching, and upgrading EMC's ESC PowerPath module: vcenter Update Manager can provision, patch, and upgrade third-party modules that you can install on ESX, such as EMC's PowerPath multipathing software. Using the capability of Update Manager to set policies using the Baseline construct and the comprehensive Compliance Dashboard, you can simplify provisioning, patching, and upgrading of the PowerPath module at scale. User-configurable number of virtual CPUs per virtual socket: You can configure virtual machines to have multiple virtual CPUs reside in a single virtual socket, with each virtual CPU appearing to the guest operating system as a single core. Previously, virtual machines were restricted to having only one virtual CPU per virtual socket. 6 Active Energy Manager (AEM) is an IBM Systems Director advanced manager plug-in that allows systems administrators to monitor and manage the energy usage of IBM servers. vsphere is VMware's premier platform for virtualization. Starting with vsphere 4.0, VMware offers a plug-in framework for third parties to extend its management capabilities through the vsphere client. The IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager plug-in for VMware vsphere client allows VMware vsphere and IBM Systems Director customers to leverage AEM functionality through their vsphere client user interface. AEM capabilities like power trending graphs and tables, and viewing the power properties of an IBM server are now exposed directly through the vsphere client. The plug-in also allows the user to easily launch the IBM Systems Director console through the vsphere client, for quick access to the full set of IBM Systems Director capabilities as well. It provides a more integrated user experience than previously available.
