Reducing Costs in the Data Center The Increasingly Costly Data Center Data managers are finding themselves in a crisis. Data volumes are growing exponentially every year. According to Paul P. Tallon, professor of information systems at Boston College, Corporate data is estimated to be growing at over five exabytes per annum. 1 Companies are not only generating more primary data, they are required to back up and retain that data many times over its life cycle. This process creates even larger volumes of data to be managed. With a retention period of one year for weekly full backups and 10 days for daily incremental backups, a single terabyte (TB) of data requires 53 TB of capacity for data protection over its life cycle. At the same time, senior managers and regulators are demanding higher levels of service, longer online retention times, and higher levels of data protection. Many data centers have simply run out of space, power, and cooling capacity. According to a recent Capacity Requirements for Data Protection 1 TB X 52 weeks (one year retention) +.1 (10% incremental change) X 10 days (retention) 53 TB Gartner report, By 2008, 50 percent of current data centers will have insufficient power and cooling capacity to meet the demands of high-density equipment. 2 The rising cost of power, the increased power requirements of dense rack systems, and the shortage of power capacity are converging to make reducing power consumption a critical goal for data center managers. Gartner predicts that through 2009, energy costs will emerge as the second highest operating cost in 70 percent of worldwide data center facilities. 3 Few IT budgets are keeping pace with this growth or with rising energy costs, labor costs, and other operational costs. The bottom line: data managers have more data to protect and much less time, space, and money allocated to protecting it than ever before. This paper will compare the cost and efficiency of a S2100 -ES2 VTL with ContentAware TM DeltaStor TM data deduplication software to other common backup and recovery technologies. It will demonstrate that an S2100-ES2 VTL with DeltaStor software can not only address all of an enterprise s data back up and recovery needs, it can also save as much as 88 percent of the associated operating costs.
Cutting Costs in the Data Center 2 Meeting Data Center Needs Today s enterprise data managers need a solution that can meet a variety of complex data protection needs while containing costs in the data center. Specifically, they need a solution that: Backs up data fast enough to stay within shrinking windows Meets more stringent SLAs by maintaining data, document and application availability Addresses green environmental initiatives by using less power and floor space Enables them to meet regulatory requirements for data security, retention times, and restore times Automates manual tasks and eliminates staff intervention to reduce labor costs Enables simple, affordable scalability of both performance and capacity as data volumes grow exponentially Ensures data integrity throughout backup, retention, and restore processes Data Protection Options For enterprises with more than 50 TB of data to back up and restore, data managers have several options of data protection to choose from. The first option is to use tape libraries, a proven technology that is in most data centers today. The second option is to use multiple socalled simple virtual tape library systems. These systems were designed for small to mediumsized companies and have a maximum performance of less than 1 TB per hour and a maximum usable capacity of less than 20 TB per appliance. They offer both faster backup performance than tape and data deduplication a software technology that dramatically reduces capacity requirements by eliminating the need to store duplicate data. The third option is to add deduplication software to a disk-to-disk solution. However, the slow performance of this type of solution (<1.6 TB per hour for backups) and added complexity (it requires a third-party integrator and hardware from multiple vendors) make it an unrealistic option for an enterprise-class data center. The fourth option is to move to an enterprise-class virtual tape library technology with at least 50 TB per appliance of usable capacity and performance of more than 11.5 TB per hour. Of the leading VTLs in this category, only ContentAware solutions offers deduplication. For that reason, is treated as a separate option for comparison purposes in this paper. Consider Deduplication By reducing physical disk requirements by as much as fifty-fold (when combined with hardware compression), data deduplication software has emerged as an important technology to help data managers deal with exponential data growth. Deduplication software analyzes data in the backup set and stores only unique data. It replaces any duplicate data with pointers to a single reference set, dramatically reducing the capacity required to store it.
Cutting Costs in the Data Center 3 Advanced Deduplication, Industry-Leading Performance S2100 VTLs with ContentAware DeltaStor data deduplication features post processing to deliver up to 9600 MB/second (34.5 TB/hour) unimpeded backup performance. s enterprise-class byte-level comparison uses built-in intelligence about the actual file content, called ContentAware technology, to compare pieces of data as objects (e.g., Word document to Word document or Oracle database to Oracle database) and to identify likely redundancies. It then uses byte-level pattern matching to find duplicate data. Unlike other technologies that use the first instance of a file as the reference copy, the ContentAware byte-level method uses the most recent copy and replaces older duplicate data with pointers to it. As a result, this technology eliminates the need to reconstitute newer data from numerous points and is able to restore files nearly instantaneously.
Cutting Costs in the Data Center 4 Typical Backup Scenario We used a typical enterprise backup scenario to compare the annual costs of administration labor, power, and floor space for a S2100-ES2 Series 750 VTL with DeltaStor data deduplication software to three other categories of backup and recovery solutions: simple VTLs with deduplication (), other enterprise-class VTLs (), and tape libraries. We compared these costs over a three-year period using the following assumptions: Eight-hour maximum backup window Full weekly backups of 70 TB with one-year online retention period Daily incremental backups (10 percent daily change) with a 10-day online retention period Compounded annual growth (CAGR) of 65 percent in primary data 4 Power consumption 5 was calculated as follows: - tape library 366 at watts (W) assuming 50 percent active and 50 percent idle time - at 43 kw per unit - at 11 kw per rack Heat dissipation was calculated at 10,000 BTU per hour per rack Average US commercial power cost of $0.0937/kW 6 Commercial floor space at $40 per square foot. Tapes allocated at 80percent LTO3 drive: 400 GB native Compression and deduplication ratios were calculated as follows: - tape library: 2:1 (compression only) - : 3:1 (compression only) - : 20:1 (compression and deduplication) - S2100: 50:1 (compression and deduplication) Average tape drive cost of $18,000 Management consoles are the number of system management interfaces a customer has to use in order to manage a given volume of stored data Restore times calculated for the latest version of a 3.5 TB (or database) and for a single 100 GB file set Loaded hourly rate of $36 and 2,000 total working hours per backup administrator All dollar figures are in US dollars Eliminating Silos of Storage We used two metrics to evaluate the administration costs to manage each technology the number of management consoles and the overall management time. The savings in administration cost compared to tape were immediate and dramatic. The S2100 saved 90 percent of the cost of administration, or nearly $150,000, over three years. Our results showed that not only did the S2100-ES2 eliminate the manual tasks of mounting and unmounting tapes, fixing hard drive failures, and monitoring backups, its scalability eliminated the need to create multiple individually managed silos of storage that the systems are prone to.
Cutting Costs in the Data Center 5 The S2100-ES2 also saved Figure 1. Three-Year Cost Comparison significant administration cost compared to simple VTLs with an advertised deduplication ratio of 20:1. (See Figure 1.) At the end of three years, the required users to deal with four silos of storage, compared to the single system required by. This $70,000 $60,000 $50,000 $40,000 $30,000 $20,000 $10,000 $0 added complexity translates to significantly higher administration costs. (See figure 2.) The Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 system cost just $17,000 in administration/labor compared to $74,000 for the, for a 77 percent savings. In addition to adding complexity, s have lower deduplication efficiency because the comparison process that identifies duplicate data does not compare data among different silos. Annual Power Cost Annual Labor Cost Annual Floor Space Cost $70,000 $60,000 $50,000 $40,000 $30,000 $20,000 $10,000 $0 Figure 2. Administration Cost Comparison Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 The enterprise VTL () cost 50 percent more in administration labor than the S2100. These costs were attributable to the higher number of consoles to be managed and the amount of disk subsystem management they requires, such as RAID set configuration, capacity allocation, and performance tuning. These activities are fully automated in the S2100-ES2. Power Usage The tape library had the lowest power costs at $533 over the three-year period, compared to $1,590 for the S2100 VTL. However, the system was nearly as efficient, saving more than 47 percent over the and 88 percent over the. The S2100 requires only 1 kw per unit compared to the, which requires 11 kw per unit, and the, which requires 43 kw per unit. (See Figure 3.) Floor Space By the third year, the S2100-ES2 VTL used 65 percent less floor space than the, which translates to a savings of 118 square feet. It also saved nearly 20 percent of the space required by the. The required 19 square feet less than the S2100-ES2. $6,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,000 $1,000 $0 Figure 3. 8 Cutting Costs in the Data Center 6 Restore Performance Restore performance is a key criterion for enterprise data managers. Many backup solutions that are optimized for backup performance require lengthy restore times. To compare file recovery speed, we calculated the time required to restore the latest version of a 3.5 TB (or database) and the time required to restore a single 100 GB file set. (See Figure 4.) Restoring a single 100 GB file set takes 21 minutes with the, compared to just five minutes with the S2100. Note that tape media management (locating tapes, transporting them to and from storage, mounting tapes, etc.) could add as much as eight hours to these restore times. To restore a 3.5 TB or database, the tape system would require 12 hours, compared to three hours required by the S2100. Minutes Figure 4. Comparison of Restore Times Tape 3.5 TB or Database 100 GB Single File Set The S2100-ES2 delivers 80 percent faster restore times than the. It can restore the full 3.5 TB data base in three hours and fourteen minutes compared, to 16 hours required by the. It can restore a single 100 GB file set in six minutes compared, to 28 minutes required by the. The takes twice as long (six hours) to restore the 3.5 TB database compared to the S2100 and 11 minutes to restore the 100 GB file set.
Cutting Costs in the Data Center 7 Benefits of DeltaStor Deduplication The DeltaStor software solution performs deduplication outside the primary data path, enabling it to deliver wire speed Fibre Channel backup performance. It is not susceptible to the restore performance degradation problems with other deduplication technologies that use the first backup as a key source of data for populating the lookup data. This method causes them to fragment data across the disks and slows restores. The solution uses the most recent backup as the reference data. The newest backup is always complete, enabling the fastest restores for the most recently backed up data (which is typically the most frequently restored data). DeltaStor software has built-in intelligence that compares data objects, for significantly better performance and deduplication ratios than the other solutions. DeltaStor software has the following additional advantages: Higher levels of deduplication. The ContentAware model intelligently analyzes the relationships between files and understands which files are likely to be redundant before it compares them. Combined with compression, it can reduce data capacity requirements by 50:1. Unlike other technologies, DeltaStor software is equally efficient for incremental and full backups. Advanced customization features. Since DeltaStor software has more intelligence around the content of backup data, it can support sophisticated configuration rules that enable customers to tune it specifically to their environment. For example, customers can configure the solution to handle designated data types, data from certain servers, data from certain policies, or to exclude specific data formats. Immediately achieves optimal deduplication. Because DeltaStor software compares actual files to one another, it achieves optimal deduplication ratios as quickly as the second backup. Designed for simple scalability. s ContentAware algorithm is designed to natively support clustering. With every processing node that is added to the cluster, the system adds processing and disk I/O resources for increased deduplication performance. There is also no limit on the backup set size. Industry-leading backup and restore performance. By deduplicating outside the primary data path, DeltaStor enables the VTL to deliver unimpeded wire speed Fibre Channel backup performance without the restore performance degradation of bytelevel and hash-based deduplication technologies. Guaranteed data integrity. Unlike hash-based and byte-level algorithms, which effectively guess at data breakpoints, the ContentAware approach natively includes and understands both files and breakpoints and the redundancy (or lack thereof) of a given data set.
Cutting Costs in the Data Center 8 Conclusion Combined with the hardware compression on a S2100-ES2 VTL, ContentAware DeltaStor data deduplication reduces capacity requirements by 50:1. At this ratio, it changes the economics of data protection by making backing up to a VTL significantly less expensive than diskbased data protection solutions. (See Figure 5.) $70,000 $60,000 $50,000 $40,000 $30,000 $20,000 $10,000 $0 Figure 5. Three-Year Operating Cost Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 The tape libraries cannot deliver the backup performance or restore times that enterprise managers need to meet their SLAs. Savings achieved with their efficient power consumption is more than offset by their high labor costs. tape libraries are highly labor intensive, requiring continuous monitoring and intervention. However, tape is an economical and environmentally responsible way to archive data. The was designed for small to medium-sized businesses and cannot scale performance or capacity to enterprise levels. The number of individually managed units, the lower deduplication ratio, and the complexity of management offset any savings realized by a slightly smaller footprint. Because the option does not have a deduplication solution, it requires a significantly larger footprint, more power consumption, and more consoles to manage. Without advanced automation such as with the S2100, the also requires more labor to handle disk management tasks. Both backup and restore performance are significantly slower than those of the S2100. Deduplication is an important way for data center managers to address the spiraling cost of energy, labor and space and to manage the impending shortage of power and cooling capacity predicted by Gartner. DeltaStor software also helps cut the cost of regulatory compliance by enabling longer online retention.
