Moving Containment Inside the Enclosure Presented by Jeff Markle Great Lakes Case & Cabinet
Containment Containment : To put constraint upon; to restrain; to confine; to keep within bounds Containment in the data center is the isolation of conditioned air (hot or cold) The goal is to increase cooling efficiency, to ensure proper operational temperature of equipment, reduce operating costs, minimize the risk of down time or strains on the systems
Data Center - Worst Practices Hot Aisle / Cold Aisle Heat exhaust recirculation Heat exhaust recirculation Heat exhaust recirculation 85 F 29% Rh 60 F Perforated tile in hot aisle 70% Rh Perforated tile in hot aisle Uncontained Air Flow Paths - inefficient Rear cable cut outs Rear cable cut outs
Covering the Basics Preventing Bypass Seal the Gaps, for Conditioned Air Raised Floor Cable Access Grommets (qty-9 cut outs 8 x8 = one floor tile) Brush Grommet Kit Tool less Filler Panels Sealing access-holes in raised floor Maintains static pressure in raised floor and reduces amount of particulate build-up under raised floor Filler / Blanking Panels prevents re-circulation and by-pass air within the enclosure above & below the equipment Brush Grommet Kits Prevents by-pass airflow around the equipment within the enclosure by sealing the rails to the side panels & still have cable access
Airflow paths internal & external, with no Hot & Cold Air separation. No Aisle Containment options, Mesh Front door, where 30% of the door is still blocked Hot Air Returns are in the cold aisle Has to cool 28 cubic feet of air per cabinet before being drawn into enclosure by equipment.
ASHRAE TC9.9 New 2008 Recommended Environmental Envelope Version 2008 Version Low End Temp. 68 F (20 C) 64.4 F (18 C) High End Temp. 77 F (25 C) 80.6 F (27 C) Low end Moisture 40% RH 41.9 F D.P. (5.5 C) High End Moisture 55% RH 60% RH & 59 F D.P. (15 C) Allows you to raise your Temp. set point = cost reductions only when measures are taken to eliminate recirculation / bypass air flow
Standard Hot Aisle / Cold Aisle Front & Rear Vented Doors (Optional fan assisted.) F in Cold Aisle F at server intake F at server exhaust Approx.: 4 6 kw load / enclosure 1050 CFM thru the enclosure Recirculation from exhaust back to the intake causing the CRAC units to be less efficient as they have to cool all of the white space first
Containment There are a wide variety of products which offer containment across aisles, panels which mount to the top of the enclosures and containment curtains which hang from the ceiling * Sourced from InfoWorld.com
Containment Cold Aisle Contained with uncontained Hot Air return back to CRAC units
Containment Contained Cold Aisle Ducted hot air return to CRAC units via plenum and down flow chimneys. All air flow is separated but why build a room within a room?
Cold Aisle Containment / Ducted Exhaust Key Design Features: Concrete slab floor = save cost on raised floor & installation Overhead down draft Cold Aisle air delivery Ducted Exhaust back to CRAC unit. Passive Enc. Systems = no fan assist Overhead power & data, Cable management * Sourced from Computerworld.com
Ducted Exhaust is a form of Hot Aisle Containment. Standard Cold Aisle / Ducted Exhaust Front Vented Door / Solid Rear Door (Optional fan assisted) F in the Raised Floor F in Cold Aisle F at server intake F at server exhaust Approx.: 5-7 kw load / enclosure The return air temp is increased which increases the CRAC unit efficiency. The white space of the room does not get heated from the Hot aisle recirculation. Therefore the CRAC unit can run at a higher set point temperature (cost savings) and still achieve the same Cold Aisle temps Still have to cool the entire Cold Aisle before cooling the equipment
Containment moved into the enclosure via Air Manager & Chimney Data Center utilizing Chimney and Air Manager solution Air grates in floor are only for the comfort cooling of personnel working in the space Facility uses Air Side Economizers; freecooling and runs 90% on outside air Equipment is mixed Avaya, EMC, Dell, HP and Foundry Ducted return is Ducted return is plumbed back into facility HVAC for additional overall efficiency
Heat Load Dissipation of the Enclosure within a Data Center is directly Dependent upon the Cooling Capacity of the CRAC units and Method of the Delivery & Return Airflow. Cooling Efficiency is related to the separation of the Conditioned Air from the Hot Exhaust by various methods based upon the specific Data Center Environment. Also the elimination of Bypass Airflow of the Conditioned air will increase Cooling Efficiency. Air Manager (1 RMU) kw ratings are dependent upon the Data Center CRAC units in a Passive System Localized Optional Rack Fans can be installed for a Active System
Enclosure based Containment Plenum Air Manager / Ducted Exhaust Front Vented Door / Solid Rear Door F in white space (Optional fan assisted) F at server intake F at server exhaust Approx.: 8-12 kw load / enclosure The return air temp is increased which increases the CRAC unit efficiency. The white space of the room does not get heated from the Hot aisle recirculation. Therefore the CRAC unit can run at a higher set point temperature (cost savings) & still achieve the same Cold Aisle temps Less perf tiles are required to cool the white space only. The intake air is forced through an adjustable Air Manager directly from the CRAC Having an adjustable opening allows the raised floor pressure to be maintained throughout the Data Center Less perf tiles required = cost savings
AIR MANAGER Manages available conditioned air by directing it to the front of the equipment mounted within the enclosure. (Adjustability from 0-100%; uses bottom 1 RMU) Does not interfere with rear bottom cable access 42 & 48 deep enclosures
Rear view of enclosures; Ducted Return Typically would contain hot aisle with mesh doors for exhaust F in Aisle Spaces F 85 degree measured at chimney intake 2000 sq. ft. room, (2) 26 ton CRAC units Air side Economizers 8 to 10 kw load per Rack (208, 3 phase)
Rear View shows cable management does not interfere with exhaust airflow Zero U side EIA mounting. provides more networking mounting while not restricting exhaust air flow.
Uncontained Cold Aisle Cold Aisle in a cabinet based containment solution.
Containment via Ducting Ducted Intake / Ducted Exhaust Solid Front Door / Solid Rear Door F in white space 60 F at server intake F at server exhaust Approx.: 15 plus Kw. load / enclosure The return air temp is increased which increases the CRAC unit efficiency. The white space of the room does not get heated from the Hot aisle recirculation. Therefore the CRAC unit can run at a lower setting (cost savings) & achieve greater efficiency Even less perf tiles are required to cool the white space only. The intake air is completely contained and is able to be adjusted at the CRAC unit level This concept can be done on slab floor as well.
Containment via a Closed Loop Water Cooled System Closed-Loop Water-Cooled Enclosure 84 H x30 W x55 D : 30kW Capacity Manufactured as a specialty enclosure or an aftermarket accessory designed for installation in standard product CFM 30kW, 40 F T N+1 Variable Speed fans Offers a complete closed loop solution where heat is extracted from the rear of the enclosure via fans and channeled via a plenum to a heat exchanger mounted in the bottom of the enclosure. Cold water not only serves as a heat sink but as the fans drive the air across the heat exchanger, it becomes cooled and is then forced up a plenum chamber in the front of the enclosure to deliver conditioned air to the front of the servers and equipment mounted in the enclosure.
Cooling Considerations Closed-Loop Water- Cooled Enclosure 84 H x 30 W x 55 D 30kW Capacity
Cooling Considerations A Variable Density Closed Loop Water Cooled Solution Rack Size Heat Exchanging Unit (center). Up to 30kW cooling capacity divided equally across the Equipment Racks Chilled Air delivered via Plinth & Air Manager accessories Warm Exhaust Air return via Ducted Chimneys
Cooling Considerations A Variable Density Closed Loop Water Cooled Solution
Cooling Considerations A Variable Density Closed Loop Water Cooled Solution
A Variable Density Closed Loop Water Cooled Solution
Cooling Considerations A Variable Density Closed Loop Water Cooled Solution Allows for Greater Density in Minimum Space.
Key Points The enclosure must be an integral part of the Data Center design. It must not be thought of as an accessory to be purchased after the Data Center is designed or constructed. The goal of enclosure based containment is to cool the equipment first, not the Data Center floor space then the equipment second. You wouldn t try to cool the soda sitting on the kitchen counter by maximizing the air conditioner in your house. You would put it in the refrigerator! Thank you!
