Co-ordination & Harmonisation of Advanced e-infrastructures for Research and Education Data Sharing Regional e-infrastructures Dr. Ognjen Prnjat, GRNET CHAIN-REDS NKN Workshop, Assam Co-funded by the European Commission under its 7 th Framework Programme CHAIN-REDS WP3 Activity Interoperation and coordination of einfrastructures: objectives Support the stability of existing and emerging Regional Operation Centres (ROCs) so as to ensure interoperability of DCIs, with focus on Grids. Maintain a set of guidelines for standard grid interfacing, customised for the type of region. Investigate the emerging cloud solutions and propose the relevant interoperation approaches. Analyse the existing HPC interoperation approaches and propose potential solutions. 1
Grid context: European Grid Infrastructure Grid context: European Grid Infrastructure Logical CPUs (April 2014) EGI-InSPIRE and Council Participants Including integrated RPs Value (yearly increase) 451,500 (+26%) 487,600 Storage Disk (PB) Tape (PB) Value (yearly increase) 286PB (+22%) 118PB (-33%) Compute resource utilization (April 2014) Cumulative number of executed jobs (Million) Normalized CPU wall time (HEP-SPEC06) (Billion hours) Value (yearly increase) (+11%) (+16%) 2

Interoperation action plans D3:1: Interoperation model and plan EGI state of the art; ROC guidelines; Regional state of the art Full action plan for ROC establishment and support, per region Africa(sub-Sahara)&Arabia, Asia&Pacific, China, India, Latin America. D3.1 action plan progress Policy level: 4 MoUs signed as framework for long-term collaboration between EGI and the regions Technical level: Ongoing ROC support for implementation of technical points in the action plan: guidance, best practices, daily operations; site support by ROCs themselves. Concrete operational support for the implementation of the use-cases. Status of action plans 4
Status: India Garuda ROC Contacts 1. Ms. M. Divya Status 8 Sites running Globus Toolkit 4.0.7/ ROC is operational. Connection with EGI as Peer Infrastructure Provider. Helpdesk The helpdesk is an RT instance. Integration with GGUS is undergoing Accounting Using and in-house developed tool. Compatibility to be studied Monitoring Nagios is used internally for monitoring. Compatibility to be studied Website Operations: Promoting & fostering adoption of standards Technical areas for standards: Computing Infrastructures, but also: Scientific Gateways Data Infrastructures Security and Identity Federations Grid standards: SAGA (Simple API for Grid Applications) Cloud-standards: OCCI (Open Cloud Computing Interface) and CDMI (Cloud Data Management Interface) 5
Standards: SAGA, OCCI, CDMI Standards: demonstration 6
European Cloud: EGI FedCloud 12 countries provide 19 certified resources Number of countries currently integrating and many interested Based on OCCI and CDMI standards VM instantiations accounted for 2013 CHAIN-REDS Global cloud survey Survey conducted in early 2014 Arab region, Africa, Latin America, China, India, Europe Aimed at Cloud providers, developers, users China Inititative Services Funding/Access Country Distributed cloud at Used by BESIII Private. 8 Global recommendations (1) Rec1: correct deployment of technology and adoption of standards If a region/organisation plans to create a public cloud for R&E and they want to share its computing and storage resources with other clouds available in other parts of the world, it is suggested to choose a cloud middleware already supporting the OCCI (Open Cloud Computing Interface) and CDMI (Cloud Data Management Interface) If a region/organisation already owns and operates a public cloud for R&E and chosen middleware is not compliant with CDMI and OCCI standards, it is suggested to create the needed services and endpoints to support those standards Technical guidelines about how to configure sites in order to be part of the CHAIN-REDS cloud test-bed available at chain-project.eu Global recommendations (2) Rec2: deploy standards-based, proof-of-principle intercontinental cloud federations, to be able to demonstrate the feasibility on a global scale CHAIN-REDS global cloud federation Baseline: EGI Federated Cloud Task Force OCCI and CDMI standards as a prerequisite for federation Orchestration system, based on CLEVER, linking several Cloud providers Cloud federation demo As an application accessible by the CHAIN-REDS Science Gateway 8
Global recommendations (3,4) Rec3: ease of access (authentication and authorisation): this is one of the crucial factors and as such should be a priority in stand-alone as well as federated cloud environments CHAIN-REDS approach to Identity-Federation based access with edugain access to Scientific Gateway; example GRNET ~okeanos available via edugain Rec4: Documentation and training: documentation and training on cloud computing is of high importance to ensure the take-up of the technology and overcome the adoption barrier Conclusions GARUDA and EGI have Peer Resource Provider relationship MoU providing framework for long-term collaboration A number of technical areas (monitoring, accounting, etc) which need further analysis and study of compatibility, hopefully leading to interoperations A set of Grid and Cloud standards promoted and applied Cloud Federation demo running, GARUDA cloud deployment will hopefully join CHAIN-REDS also provides Technical/operational support for deployment of use-cases, including GROMACS for India 9
