2007 Power Symposium Where are we going? October 4, 2007 v Steven Barthel IBM Power Procurement Program Director
AGENDA A Vision from the past The New things important to our customers Efficiency The Vision For the Future 2
Technology visions in the past A group of forward thinkers came together some 50 years ago and realized the day would come that there would be such a need as a Home Computer How crazy an idea must that have been! 3
4
key points Will require not yet invented technology to work We must not allow our engineering minds to be limited to what we know today. The needed technology will not be economically feasible for the average household Today the 60+ percent of all house holds have at least 1 home computer Many households have multiple computers today! Work being done today for the under $100 computer! 5
So how does that relate to Power Efficiency 6
Moore s Law side effect Impact of Moore s Law On IT Power Consumption Cost per processor is decreasing at 29% per year Constant dollars spent on high performance IT hardware three years from now will buy 2.7 times more processors 12 times more processing power in the same or less floor space. 3.3 times increase in UPS power consumption Annual power & cooling bill for 100 servers is about $40,000* ( Quote from Servers swamp data centers as chip vendors push ahead, Computer World, February 6, 2006) 7
Quotes from the Industry and our customers Jordon Gross, Ultraspeed's commercial director : "Modern servers are smaller but draw three times more power than their 1990s equivalents. Data centers were simply not designed to handle that sort of consumption and many now need a separate substation to be built (which is often not possible) in order to increase server space Andy Greenburg, Forbes.com Building a Greener Grid A report released by the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that U.S. data centers consumed around 61 billion kilowatt-hours in 2006 at a cost of about $4.5 billion. That's about 1.5% of total U.S. electricity consumption Energy efficiency savings add up quickly. A watt saved in power consumption saves at least a watt in cooling. A watt saved in power consumption saves a dollar in data center costs. 8
Customer Goals / Drivers... power will be the #1 issue for most large company IT executives to address in the next 2-4 years. Ignoring this issue will NOT be an option. -IDC 1. Understand the current situation Many data center IT managers are unaware of the exact power cooling costs, and more specifically the breakdown of costs to the components in the data center. Large margins are used to protect power/cooling allocation failures 2. Manage the Efficiency of the current environment Customers want to be able to get the most of what they already have in place, without having to make large and disruptive change. 3. Reduce the Power / Thermal costs Once understood, customers want to reduce power costs 9 4. Plan new or retrofit the data center If this is the case, they want to do it right the first time. Trending of current power consumption for systems show growth patterns in power consumption and cooling needs. Power Calculators on new system configurations provides better planning information
Facing new pressures: Data centers are at a tipping point According to Gartner, The underlying consumption of energy in large data centers to power and cool hardware infrastructure is likely to increase steadily during the next ten years. 2 Increased Computing Demand Changing Cost Dynamics Data Center Lifecycle Mismatch In the next decade, growth in server shipments will be 6x and 69x for storage IBM / Consultant studies Per square foot, annual data center energy costs are 10 to 30 times more than those of a typical office building. 4 - William Tschudi, March 2006 Datacenters have doubled their energy use in the past five years. 5 - Koomey, February 2007 US commercial electrical costs increased by 10 percent from EPA Monthly Forecast, 2007 Eighty-six percent of data centers were built before Twenty-nine percent of clients identified data center capability affected server purchases - Ziff Davis 2. Gartner, Data Center Power and Cooling Scenario Through 2015, Rakesh Kumar, March William Tschudi, March Koomey, February EPA Monthly Forecast, Nemertes Research, Architecting and Managing the 21st Century Data Center, Johna Till Johnson,
Cleanrooms and high density data centers can use up to 100 times as much energy per square foot as a typical office building and have energy bills of more than $1 million per month SOURCE: Forbes, High-Tech Means High Efficiency, Gary Shamshoian and Colleagues, November, 2005" 11
Where does the energy go? The data center energy challenge affects both the physical data center and the IT infrastructure % of total data center electricity use Chiller/ Cooling Tower Cooling systems Humidifier Computer Room Air Conditioner Information Technology Power Distribution Unit Electrical and building systems Uninterruptible Power Supply Switch/ Gen Lighting Power Use 12
Data Center Power consumption is a major concern Power and cooling spend may eventually exceed new server spending 2000 Raw processing horsepower is the primary goal, while the infrastructure to support it is assumed ready Spending (US$B) $120 $100 $80 Worldwide Server Market New Server Spending Power and Cooling Installed Base (M Units) $ Raw processing horsepower is a given, but the infrastructure to support deployment is a limiting factor $40 $20 $ Year SOURCE: IDC, The Impact of Power and Cooling on Data Center Infrastructure, Document #201722, May 2006" 13

key points Leadership Accepting the industry standard is not good enough, we need to be Best of Breed for this Innovation We must not allow our engineering minds to be limited to what we know today. Teamwork We will have to work together, this challenge will take thinking from the best minds in this room today Speed We must act today to meet our customers expectations 16
