Chapter 1: Physical Planning Product overview EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance is a complete solution for customers interested in delivering IT in an as-a-service model. It is targeted for cloud providers and enterprise/mid-market organizations who intend to provide cloud capabilities to their end customers and third parties. The VMAX Cloud Edition solution provides cost-effective cloud storage in predefined packages based on capacity and performance. Cloud providers and their tenants can define the amount of storage required, and VMAX Cloud Edition creates it as needed. VMAX Cloud Edition is pre-engineered and does not require storage architects to create hardware and software configurations. Using the VMAX Cloud Edition portal, cloud providers and their tenants control all aspects of their cloud storage, including user maintenance, customization, monitoring, provisioning, and analysis. The EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition solution delivers: Secure multi-tenancy Role-based access control determines the level of access for the cloud provider and tenants. Tenant self service VMAX Cloud Edition enables the delegation of day-to-day management tasks such as storage provisioning and deprovisioning to the tenants, reducing cloud provider intervention and allowing cloud providers to focus their energy elsewhere. Management interface portal The VMAX Cloud Edition portal enables cloud providers and tenants to manage multiple instances of VMAX Cloud Edition. Service automation Users submit portal service requests via the VMAX Cloud Edition portal hosted by EMC to manage their storage assets. Interfaces are simplified and abstracted for tenant use. VMAX Cloud Edition automatically takes these logical requests and intelligently translates them into specific resource allocation requests based on EMC-proven best practices, which are then executed against specific storage assets to fulfill the request. Reporting, trending, and monitoring capabilities Usage reports are tenant-based to facilitate charge-back and to allow customization of service levels. Service level selection options The VMAX Cloud Edition Service Catalog describes the service levels from which end user customers can choose. The service levels in the catalog are presented in a way that is easily understandable; tenants can choose to provision from the service level that best matches their requirements and demands. Once a tenant selects a service level, delivery of the service level is automated. Each service level is enterprise-class, whether bronze, silver, gold, platinum or diamond. Refer to the EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition Product and User Guide for details about VMAX Cloud Edition features and operation. 10 VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance Physical Planning Guide

Chapter 1: Physical Planning Environment overview The EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition consists of a VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance driving an EMC Symmetrix VMAX system at the customer site. This configuration connects to the EMC Data Center over a virtual private network (VPN) connection. The system is administered and controlled at the customer site using the VMAX Cloud Edition portal over a secure HTTPS connection. EMC configures all hardware components for the customer. At the customer data center The VMAX Cloud Edition includes up to ten EMC Symmetrix VMAX arrays and a VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance, which consists of two Appliance Servers. The VMAX Cloud Edition Appliance Servers host the following virtual machines in a virtualized server environment: Virtualization Manager Provides management of the virtual machines in the automation appliance. Solutions Enabler Provides API access to the EMC Symmetrix VMAX system. ConnectEMC Provides secure remote access for product troubleshooting. Collector Gathers configuration and usage information from the EMC Symmetrix VMAX system. Automation Engine Implements provisioning operations for the EMC Symmetrix VMAX system. At the EMC Data Center Communication between the customer and EMC is accomplished through a VMAX Cloud Edition portal, accessed securely using an HTTPS connection. The portal primarily interacts with the coordinator, which in turn interacts with the data warehouse. The data warehouse contains configuration and usage information. Data collection and reporting At the customer site, each EMC Symmetrix VMAX system periodically collects configuration information that is captured by the VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance. The VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance communicates with the EMC Data Center through a secure HTTPS connection. If a communications error occurs, the captured information is retained for later retransmission attempts. At the EMC Data Center, the array information is analyzed and validated against an existing configuration file. Once validated, the captured data is transformed and loaded into a secure data warehouse where cloud providers and EMC applications can use it for billing and analysis. The configuration data is also incorporated into the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) within the data warehouse where it serves as baseline state for servicing future provisioning requests. Environment overview 11

Chapter 2: Connection Planning Connection plan EMC Support Engineering will work with the customer to complete the planning process. This section describes what EMC will need to install and set up the EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition solution. EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition requires 16 Fibre Channel ports per engine and 4 ports for the Appliance Servers. The customer s servers or hosts must utilize the same SAN. The customer is responsible for providing cables for connecting these ports to its own SAN. Customers interact with EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition via the web portal, accessed securely via HTTPS. The web portal is hosted in the EMC Data Center. Requests are processed and sent to the VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance for execution via the VPN connection between the Cloud Edition and EMC Data Centers. In addition to the automation engine, the Automation Appliance monitors and collects configuration and utilization data which is sent back to the EMC Data Center. VMAX Cloud Edition requires eight customer-provided IP addresses. Fibre Channel connections Figure 1 shows the Fibre Channel connections required for VMAX Cloud Edition. The connections provide redundant paths for High Availability. In addition to the connections shown, which are for control paths, additional Fibre Channel connections are required between the EMC Symmetrix VMAX system and the SAN switch for data path connectivity. Note that two EMC Symmetrix VMAX ports are for management and 16 ports per EMC Symmetrix VMAX engine are for I/O, depending on the Service Level purchased. The customer is responsible for providing the hosts and host connection cables. Figure 1: Fibre Channel connections 18 VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance Physical Planning Guide

Chapter 2: Connection Planning Table 6 describes the Fibre Channel port provisioning for each pre-defined VMAX Cloud Edition service level. Table 6: Fiber channel port provisioning Service level Provisioned FC ports Service band Diamond 8 Diamond Platinum 8 Plat-3 Plat-2 Plat-1 Gold 8 Gold-4 Gold-3 Gold-2 Gold-1 Silver Silver (continued) 4 Silver-4 Silver-3 Silver-2 Silver-1 Bronze 2 Bronze-2 Bronze-1 Though these pre-defined service levels are available, you can optionally determine your own custom storage and performance packages. FA port connections Use the following best practices when connecting the EMC Symmetrix FA host I/O ports: Use all of the 0 ports on the director first and then the 1 ports. See Figure 2. Spread the port connections across engines/directors first (to increase availability), then, if needed, use the same director. Configure multiple paths to FA ports on separate slices and directors. At this point, data paths do not need to be zoned, as this will be completed by the cloud enabled solution. Fibre Channel connections 19

Chapter 2: Connection Planning Host port connections Figure 2: FA port connections Use the following best practices when connecting a host: A minimum of two FA ports per host; however, four ports per host is recommended. Connect at least two HBAs across redundant fabrics (for high availability). Ethernet connections Figure 3 shows the Ethernet connections required for VMAX Cloud Edition. The Appliance Servers must be on the same LAN as the Fibre Channel switches in order for automated zoning to be possible. For remote support, the Appliance Servers must be able to communicate with the ESRS gateway. Two Ethernet cables will be plugged into each Appliance Server. VMAX Cloud Edition requires eight customer-provided IP addresses. The customer is responsible for providing the Ethernet cables to connect to the switch. 20 VMAX Cloud Edition Automation Appliance Physical Planning Guide
