Smart water metering Smart meters as a water management tool Petrus van Heerden, Country Manager Kamstrup DHI annual conference 2016
What is smart? Smart meter A device that allows consumers to monitor consumption on a regular basis and in quasi real-time (FT) AMR Automated meter reading AMI Advanced metering infrastructure 2 DHI 2016 conference
Smart meter Information is key to management The Smart Water Meter is a tool to provide the required data Features Electronic meters with communication It can be a mobile or fixed communication network Generates intelligent alarms providing additional info on leaks, dry, burst or tamper conditions Detailed data about water usage Historic data kept inside the meter for verification
AMR Automated meter reading the first step? Collection of information but no control Features Handheld or drive by options Intelligent alarms from the meter (delayed) Data about water usage(delayed)
AMI Advanced metering infrastructure the BIG step? Collection of information but usually with control Features Fixed infrastructure Bi-directional communication Data near real time Alarms picked up much earlier
Evolution of smart metering Costs Manual meter reading AMR AMI Mobile meter reading Handheld meter reading Fixed network meter reading Low meter reading costs Increased operational efficiency Revenue cycle improvement Better security and accuracy Smart Grid Fixed network two-way comms Smart Grid Revenue protection, Live data on consumption, Leaks and burst info in real time Customer service improvements Revenue protection Remote disconnect/prepayment Home automation integration 6 DHI 2016 conference Simple consumption read Interval meter data Utility and Customer Benefits Distribution Reliability
7 DHI 2016 Global challenges in water
Global challenges in water Total cost NRW worldwide conservatively estimated at $14billion per year 45 million cubic meters are lost daily through water leakage in the distribution networks(developing countries) Enough to serve nearly 200 million people. 8 Source: WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION SECTOR BOARD DISCUSSION PAPER SERIES P A P E R N O. 8
Global challenges in water 9 Looking at the global challenges in water we need to find new sources of water or we need to find smarter ways to manage what we have.
Managing the problem
Water Utility top challenges In a 2014 survey Water Utilities mentioned leakage as their top challenge
Challenge 1: Real Losses Can smart water meters assist with leakage detection and prevention? 12 DHI 2016
District metering area 13 DHI 2016 conference
Challenge 1: Leakage District metering area implemented DMA Volume DMA Water Temperature DMA Ambient Temperature DMA Infocodes - Leak - Burst - Reverse flow - Tamper - Dry Volume Water Temperature Ambient Temperature Infocodes - Leak - Burst - Reverse flow - Tamper - Dry Pressure Pressure Surges Infocodes With this information a utility can quickly determine where a burst is occurring within a DMA
Managing the problem
Managing the problem Managing Real Losses Can smart water meters assist with leakage detection and prevention? Yes. After changing from mechanical to smart meters we document consumption precisely, more than a year back in time. Providing evidence at an early stage helps settling disputes. Consumers have more trust in our meter readings now. Eyvind Holst, Chairman, Toerring Water Company, DK
SA challenge not only leakage Can smart water meters assist with NRW apparent losses in South Africa? 17 DHI 2016
Managing the problem
Managing the problem Managing Apparent Losses Customer meter inaccuracy Smart ultrasonic meter accurate for up 16 years. No wear and tear and no maintenance. Unauthorized consumption, illegal connections, theft and fraud System water balance can be done every hour within DMA so increase in unauthorized consumption can be identified and corrected Data collection and transfer errors between meter and the billing system Fully automated from meter to billing system It used to be extremely difficult to localize leaks. First test reading of 255 new smart meters detected 3 leaks; two hot water tanks and a bath-room pipe. Dennis Schrøder, Operational Manager, Hjerting Electricity and Water utility, DK
Water management Water management Important?..or just a ticket to the rugby? Smart meters are efficient in minimizing non revenue water. Smart meters can improve customer service. The smart meter is a perfect tool for water conservation. 20 DHI 2016 conference
Questions & Answers?????!!!!! 21 DHI 2016 conference
