2 Overview Throughout our history, we have developed innovations that meet the demands of an ever-changing market. Our approach is explorative; reimagining possibilities that create revolutionary change. It is with this foundation that we sought out to address a central issue that affects all our customers: the need for more space. With that in mind, we developed a concept we call Designing in the Negative Space. So, what is negative space? Quite simply, it is the un-claimable, wasted or inaccessible space on a board or chip. Whether it is created by mechanical or thermal restrictions, serves as a power channel or is claimed by other functions (such as management or support), the end result is the same. It cannot be used. Until now. 2 Power On. In In the Negative Space.
3 Freedom from Mechanical Constraints with the Dual DLynx* Traditionally, designers would have to compromise their plans due to the fact that power supplies typically need physical clearance around them of 4mm. Such is the case when power is placed directly on the board. With a power hungry consumer market only pushing performance requirements higher, designers are quickly finding options to accommodate these demands becoming scarce. However, with the arrival of our Dual DLynx, customers now have a single, dual output module that produces twice the amount of power while saving valuable space on their board. From networking boards and storage units to data center applications, the Dual DLynx is ideal for a wide range of uses. With a 25% reduction in board space requirements, this module provides significant design value to users. Because it features adaptive voltage scaling for power reduction, the Dual DLynx achieves and maintains cost savings. 4 Recapturing Lost Space from Mechanical/ Thermal Restrictions with the SlimLynx* Every designer knows that airflow is crucial in transforming feasibility into reality. A conventional power unit might have a height of six to twelve millimeters. Those modules do not offer the flexibility needed in achieving today s complex design considerations, making them a challenge to use. Enter the SlimLynx. With its innovative design, this component can be placed either on the back side of the board or underneath the mezzanine (middle level) making the low height area of the main PCB usable for power. This slim 2.9mm, low profile module is a fully insulated and self-sustaining unit, allowing it to be mounted near traditional heat sinks. 6 Enhanced Features with the GigaDLynx * Feature limitations occur when board area is used for separate current, voltage, temperature measurement and tight set point controls. As the need for digital communication capabilities and power consumption continue to escalate, current technology needs to rapidly evolve. The GE solution to this ongoing issue is the GigaDLynx. With a cost efficient, open frame design, this module offers a compact, 755 mm 2 platform that allows designers to recapture 23% of previously lost board space by integrating features and eliminating external components.. This new product offers a broad spectrum of input voltage range (4.5Vdc - 14 Vdc) and expands digital communication capacities and power density potential. Additional digital features, accessible using the industry standard PMBus, provide even more functionality than previous generation converters. 7 Improve Transient Performance with Tunable Loop * External capacitors have long served as power solutions, but they can only be used uniformly without modifications and take up valuable board space. Aiming to reduce dependence on external capacitors and energy-holding components for power, we developed enhanced transient compensation, which effectively lessens capacitance requirements. The latest generation of power modules employ GE s patented Tunable Loop technology, which regulates the release of stored power and increases aperture capabilities. Rather than relying on auto tuning with the resulting compromised performance, GE gives you the ability to truly optimize transient performance while minimizing the size of your capacitor banks. Also, as opposed to component on/off function limitations, the capacitors can now be tuned to provide what s needed when it s needed, making them fully customizable. 9 Eliminate Thermal Constraints with the CLP0212 * Traditionally, power supplies with inbuilt fan(s) employ convection cooling but take up space. But how cool would it be to design a power supply without a fan? The CLP0212 is a fanless, open frame power supply designed for space constrained applications. 10 Reconfiguring Power Distribution with the GP100 * Commercial power enters datacenter buildings as 3-phase industrial voltages such as 380Vac or 480Vac which is typically converted to single phase 220Vac or 240Vac power to comply with the needs of equipment housed inside the data center computing racks. The traditional approach has been to turn the industrial 3-phase power to single-phase before it enters the datacenter computing rack. To facilitate this process, AC Power Distribution Units (PDU s) located in the computing rack, break the 3-phase power into three single-phase feeders connected to three physical single-phase rectifiers. This distribution method introduces the possibility that one phase may present unbalanced phases to the AC grid in the event of a single rectifier failure. Furthermore, it requires constant management and maintenance procedures to ensure efficiency, uptime, and functionality. In addition, the common technique of splitting 3-phase power into single-phase legs needs a commercial transformer to be present at the building s commercial power entrance in order to introduce a neutral leg as required to operate the single-phase rectifiers. Because this module operates directly off of 3-phase industrial power, the single phase conversion process and neutral wire presence have been removed. This means that each GP100 rectifier always presents a phase balanced load to the AC grid, allowing valuable resources to be allocated to other areas and produces OpEx cost stability. The GP100 also provides users a significant CapEx savings as it completely eliminates the need of utilizing a costly 3φ Power Distribution Unit and saves up to six racks of physical space. 3 Phase PDU Integrated Power Dist.
