3 Motivations Critical Infrastructures are part of our life and their protection is an interesting challenge, but how important are they for society and economy? What is the degree of maturity of Italian critical infrastructure? 4 Physical and cyber Infrastructures We may distinguish between physical and cyber Critical Infrastructures Physical: something concrete which is today complemented by a cyber part (easier to assess) Energy, Transportation, Telecommunication, Water supply, Intangible: something abstract (information usually) which is virtual and stands on a cyber infrastructure Financial service, e-health, e-government, 12/06/2013 The maturity of Italian Critical Infrastructures 4

6 The energy sector - Consumption Electricity consumption in Italy: 5,094.1 kwh per capita, 2011 Increasing by 0.8 per cent compared to /06/2013 The maturity of Italian Critical Infrastructures 6
7 The energy sector - Generation In the EU context, with a production of 4,994.1 kwh for capita in 2010, Italy stands below the average, that is 6, /06/2013 The maturity of Italian Critical Infrastructures 7
8 The energy sector - Consumption from renewable sources In 2010, the percentage of final energy consumption by means of renewable sources in Italy is 22.2 %. Higher than the EU average of 19.9 % In 2011, the percentage is 23.8, with an increase of 1.6 percentage points The target to achieve in 2020 is 26 percent 12/06/2013 The maturity of Italian Critical Infrastructures 8

14 Cyber attacks to Critical Infrastructures. It appears though that Italy is one of the countries with the highest security adoption. The report presented by McAfee and CSIS on 2011 puts Italy in the 2 nd position in the world! 12/06/2013 The maturity of Italian Critical Infrastructures 14
15 The costs of not doing.. According to the Observatory I costi del non fare Italy is suffering from not doing improving its infrastructure.
