6 IEEE India Standards Interest Group SIG initiated as part of IEEE-SA outreach in India in April 2010 Incubated under the Bangalore Section with support from IEEE-SA The SIG focus is India-wide with volunteers across India and involvement from all Sections and Chapters KPIs agreed upon and driven by volunteers in each of the focus groups Excellent platform to bring together volunteers Enable & drive standardization: Increase participation of Indian technical community in global standards development R&D in India is growing in all engineering fields: Need to adhere to standards to participate in global market Ensure India context is captured in global standards and looking at taking leadership roles in these activities in future GridWeek Asia 20126

7 SIG focus on Smart Grid Standards Smart Grid Focus Group set up to increase participation of Indian technical community in various aspects of smart grid Drive participation and contribution from Indian community on Smart Grid standards development within IEEE-SA Understanding of current & established smart grid standards & participation/contribution in development of new standards; alongside working with industry and government in implementation Ensure Indian requirements are captured when global standards for smart grid is being developed through participation in working groups Plan for formation of specific focus groups to review specific standards of high relevance for India GridWeek Asia 20127

8 IEEE-SA & SIG enabling India Smart Grid Implementation The Smart Grid focus area under the SIG includes industry, government regulators & policy makers and academia Ground level campaign to increase awareness of Smart Grid and its benefits through outreach and workshop sessions; Education through webinars and full-day seminars for industry & academia under discussions with IEEE-SA for 2012 Transfer of global best practices and knowledge from other Smart Grid markets IEEE-SA is active in Smart Grid SIG can participate, contribute and collaborate with the India Smart Grid Forum & task force in driving the initiatives in India Work with policy & regulatory bodies in India (DERC, CERC) in driving the SG implementation GridWeek Asia 20128

11 India Smart Grid Task Force: Objectives India Smart Grid Task Force (ISGTF) Inter-ministerial group chaired by Mr. Sam Pitroda 5 Working Groups 1. Pilots on New Technologies 2. Loss Reduction & Analysis 3. Power to Rural/Urban Areas 4. Distributed Generation & Renewable 5. Cyber Security The Task Force, through its 5 WGs, is working towards the following objectives: Developing indigenous equipment and technology for Smart Grid Addressing the problem of Power Shortage Loss reduction Access of power to rural areas Reliability of power to urban areas Sustainable growth GridWeek Asia

12 India Smart Grid Forum: Objectives India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) non-profit voluntary consortium of public and private stakeholders with prime objective of accelerating development of Smart Grid technologies in India 8 Working Groups Forum is an advisory body that will develop roadmap based on best practices in the world. Forum will operate in the pattern of GridWise Alliance, USA, with task forces, working groups and annual membership structure. The forum is overseen by a board of elected members. 13 Need for Global Smart Grid Standards Smart grid standards will extend across the entire grid (i.e., need interoperability standards (top down) and building block standards (bottom up) Smart grid equipment standards will be needed to handle information data management, communications and control Flexible smart grid system interoperability, design, and operational standards will allow near term and long term smart grid evolution Development of a body of interoperability smart grid standards is essential for smart grid to operate GridWeek Asia
