Cyber research and teaching examines the interactions between people, organisations and technology with expertise ranging from psychology to management science, systems science and information systems. We work with organisations such as: 3
4 Study at Cranfield Our graduate programmes in defence and security offer the highest standards of education and address the changing needs of an evolving sector. The modular structure of many of our courses offers students the flexibility to study at their own pace and exit with a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Master s (PgCert, PgDip, MSc) qualification, or simply to study an individual module. Communications Electronic Warfare * PgCert This PgCert covers a selection of electronic warfare topics relevant to military communications systems, including the specification, analysis, development, procurement and technical management of military information systems. Cyber Defence and Information Assurance ** MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course aims to develop professionals who can effectively manage and exploit the threats and opportunities of cyberspace at the organisational level. Cyberspace Operations ** MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course aims to develop professionals to support manoeuvres in cyberspace, in contested operations and as part of integrated planning. Security Restrictions and clearance apply to this course. Digital Forensics MSc, PgDip, PgCert Digital forensics is a dynamic area of criminal investigation, with new tools, techniques and methods constantly available to both the investigator and the investigated. This course offers a carefully blended mix of fundamental principles and advanced techniques, focusing on providing the knowledge and skills required to conduct comprehensive forensic examinations of digital devices. Students have access to three dedicated computer laboratories which include the latest versions of popular commercial software as used by professional forensic analysts. Information Capability Management MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course enables participants to understand the strategic importance of information and equips them with the skills to develop agile and effective ways to exploit it to its full potential by ensuring that the right information is available to the right people at the right time in an effective, efficient and secure manner. Military Electronic Systems Engineering MSc, PgDip, PgCert Participants gain a high level of understanding and detailed knowledge of military communications and sensor systems, with particular regard to electronic warfare. MSc students can also supplement their learning with an in-depth investigation into an area of electronic warfare to further enhance their analytical capability. Sensors Electronic Warfare ** PgCert The focus for this PgCert is on the specification, analysis, development, procurement, and technical management of military radar, electro-optics and infrared sensor systems, to inform the defence of these systems from cyber attack or intercept. *Full-time only **Part-time only For full information about each course see 4
5 Accreditation The Information Capability Management MSc is accredited by the British Computer Society and the Chartered Institute of Librarians and Information Professionals. My postgraduate study with Cranfield has led to greater employability by improving the weaker areas of my skills and knowledge; in particular I now have a deeper understanding of practical project management. The most enjoyable aspect of my course is the freedom to explore and research, formulating new ideas and concepts from what I ve found. Edward Oates, current student Defence and Security PhD 5

10 Research and consultancy Our expertise combined with excellence in strategic and applied research has enabled us to make significant contributions to the world around us. This is proven in rankings such as the Research Excellence Framework. Research in action: A model approach to missile countermeasures Funded by a collaborative project with Chemring as a part of a long-term strategic partnership with the aerospace, defence and security technology producer. Cranfield working in partnership with Chemring have studied infrared missile-seeker and countermeasure modelling to understand the use of pre-emptive infrared countermeasure launches. The research faithfully replicates what happens in the real world, therefore increasing the accuracy of the model. The enhanced CounterSim model delivers much better support for studying countermeasure applications for customers in the UK and overseas in both the military and civilian markets. Cranfield has studied infrared missile seeker and countermeasure modelling to understand the utility of pre-emptive launching of infrared countermeasures to enhance aircraft survivability and the ability to combat the advancing threat missile systems including countermeasures in the ultraviolet region. Further details on our research activities are available on the website: 10
11 Facilities Our unique relationship with the UK Ministry of Defence allows access to world class secure capabilities and Cranfield is home to a range of facilities not found in any comparable academic institution. We can provide independent expertise, consultancy, research and prototyping directed by renowned academics and supported by experienced technical staff.
