1 HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF INFORMATION and COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM COURSE SYLLABUS Course Code : 6DBASE/L Prerequisite : 6COMPRO2L Course Credit : 3 Units (3 hours LEC) Year Level: 2 ND year Degree Program : Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) Course Description : This course covers comprehensive concepts of database management systems, data models, data definition and data manipulation in SQL, normalization; entity-relation diagrams, data security and integrity, synchronization, data protection and recovery; distributed database systems and database trends that aid students in collecting, analyzing and maintaining data effectively. At the end of the course, students will be able to: Course Outcomes C1 Assess the suitability of line of codes and queries to situations where it is expected to be applied C3 C4 C6 Reach substantiated conclusions and recommendations using fundamental principles of database, programming fundamentals, and practices in the core information technologies, and relevant domain disciplines. Decide on practices and standards applicable to the given scenario and requirements upon designing databases Adapt and adopt best practices and standards to programming and database design in activities and tasks. Formulate questions necessary for the understanding of requirements and solutions Translates verbal problems into database context so as Graduate Outcomes Aligned to BSIT01: Apply knowledge of computing, science and mathematics appropriate to the discipline. BSIT02: Understand best practices and standards and their applications BSIT03: Analyze complex problems, and identify and define the computing requirements appropriate to its solution. Page 1 of 7

2 C8 C9 to construct valid database design using the accepted symbolic system of database and programming reasoning to determine extent of information needed Identify activity needs and requirements based on a data gathering and information Analyze program and database needs and requirements to determine specific areas where database design solutions will be used Evaluate techniques, methodologies, standards/frameworks, methods and tools for its appropriateness to the complex computing activities to be performed considering its BSIT04: Identify and analyze user needs and take them into account in the selection, creation, evaluation and administration of computer-based systems. BSIT07: Apply knowledge through the use of current techniques, skills, tools and practices necessary for the IT profession. Learning Evidences: As proof of achievement of the above-mentioned outcomes, students are required to submit/demonstrate the following: LE1 : Project Proposal C1,, LE2 : Case Study Develop an Electronic Database for a Specific Organization C1, C4, C6, LE3 : Case Study Documentation, C3,, a. Database Requirements b. Entity Relationship Diagram c. Data Dictionary d. Sample Report e. Printed Source Code f. User s Manual Measurement System: To assess the level of performance in the learning evidences, the following rubrics will be used: LE1: Case Study Documentation Area to Assess Point Value Introduction 20 Statement of the Problem 20 Page 2 of 7

3 Objectives 20 Scope and Delimitation 20 Sample Screen Layout 20 TOTAL 100 LE2 : Case Study Electronic Database Trait 4 - Excellent 3 - Satisfactory 2 Needs Improvement 1 - Unacceptable Specifications The program works and meets all of the specifications. The program works and produces the correct results and displays them correctly. It also meets most of the other specifications. The program produces correct results but does not display them correctly. The program is producing incorrect results. Readability The code is exceptionally well organized and very easy to follow. The code is fairly easy to read. The code is readable only by someone who knows what it is supposed to be doing. The code is poorly organized and very difficult to read. Reusability The code could be reused as a whole or each routine could be reused. Most of the code could be reused in other programs. Some parts of the code could be reused in other programs. The code is not organized for reusability. SQL Commands SQL statements are correct and produce queries with optimal efficiency. SQL statements used are correct and able to meet the requirements. SQL statements are correct and are able to meet all basic listing specifications from different sources. SQL statements are correct but needs optimization. Efficiency The code is extremely efficient without sacrificing readability and understanding. The code is fairly efficient without sacrificing readability and understanding. The code is brute force and unnecessarily long. The code is huge and appears to be patched together. Page 3 of 7
