6 Introduction National weather data overview has three levels of national weather data collection: synoptic stations which report full parameter set in real-time to global collection network. Roughly the same station-set as is used for operational FDRS in Indonesia climate stations, which report daily basic parameter set on monthly/yearly basis rainfall stations from, public works, agriculture,, which report daily rainfall on monthly basis.

28 Transition Between A Database Management System Choosing a FDR database management system: what needs to be considered 1. Consider the business needs 2. Designing the required system 3. Scalability 4. Architecture and technology Database architecture considerations (Normalization) 1. Database design consideration (Limit data redundancy; Limit data loss; and Limit inconsistencies between data) 2. Data model in use by FDR database system Computer hardware and software considerations 1. Current situation analysis 2. Functional solution design (Size up requirements) 3. The technical Solution design 4. System and service transition issues Making the transition from old system 1. Level of expertise required 2. Prepare the metadata to be imported 3. Intensive Testing new system
29 Database Technology Design GIS, FDRS Forecast System Chart Plotting Hydrologi Climate Databrowser dll dll... Oracle SQL Server Access Lan/Weathernet/Wan
30 Conclusions 1. The best practice FDR data management with some emphasis on building knowledge and capacity in : The phases and stages of managing computerized data Available database technologies and selecting an appropriate database Making the transition to a modern weather database system Sustaining data management operations 2. Data managers also need to be mindful of the principles for longterm FDR monitoring. The ability to maintain the continuity, homogeneity and, ultimately, quality of weather data is greatly influenced by how well observation networks and systems are managed. 3. One of the key technological decisions to be made is whether to take an existing FDR data management system design, and its associated software, or develop a tailored FDR data management using one of the RDBMSs that are available in the world today
