CS313D: ADVANCED PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE Computer Science department Lecture 11: Connection to Databases
Lecture Contents 2 What is a database? Relational databases Cases study: A Books Database Querying a Database with LINQ Dynamically Binding Query Results Retrieving Data from Multiple Tables with LINQ Creating a Master/Detail View Application
What is a Databases? 3 A database is an organized collection of data. The data is typically organized to model aspects of reality in a way that supports processes requiring information. For example, modelling the availability of rooms in hotels in a way that supports finding a hotel with vacancies.
Relational Databases 4 Today s most popular DBMSs manage relational databases, which organize data simply as tables with rows and columns. Some popular proprietary DBMSs are Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase and IBM DB2. PostgreSQL and MySQL are popular open-source DBMSs that can be downloaded and used freely by anyone. We will use Microsoft s free SQL Server Express 2012 LocalDB (
Example 5 The ID column of each row is the table s primary key a column (or group of columns) requiring a unique value that cannot be duplicated in other rows.
Selecting Data Subsets 6 You can use LINQ to Entities to define queries that select subsets of the data from a table. Example: select data from the Employees table to create a query result that shows where each department is located, in ascending order by Department number
Case study: A Books Database 7 Consider a simple Books database that stores information about some Deitel books. database schema : A database s tables, their fields and the relationships among them
many-to-many relationship foreign key a column in a table that matches the primary-key column in another table composite key - A primary key composed of two or more columns of a table. 8
ADO.NET Entity Framework 9 Step 1: Creating a Class Library Project for the ADO.NET Entity Data Model Step 2: Adding the ADO.NET Entity Data Model to the Class Library 1. Adding the ADO.NET Entity Data Model. 2. Choosing the Model Contents. 3. Choosing the Data Connection. 4.Choosing the Database Objects to Include in the Model. 5. Viewing the Entity DataModel Diagram in the Model Designer. 6. Building the Class Library.

Data Binding 12 The IDE provides visual programming tools and wizards that simplify accessing data in apps. These tools establish database connections and create the objects necessary to view and manipulate the data through Windows Forms GUI controls a technique known as data binding.
The LINQ way!! 13
The Display Author App 14
Dynamically Binding Query Results 15 The Display Query Results app allows the user to select a query from the ComboBox at the bottom of the window, then displays the results of the query.

Creating a Master/Detail View App 23 A master/detail view one part of the GUI (the master) allows you to select an entry, and another part (the details) displays detailed information about that entry. Step 1: Creating the Project Step 2: Adding a Data Source for the Table Step 3: Creating GUI Elements Step 4 : Modify the class library (BooksModel.edmx) Add using System.Collections.ObjectModel. Author constructor change HashSet to ObservableCollection. Rebuild the class library project

Retrieving Data from Multiple Tables 27 LINQ to Entities queries allow you to obtain query results that combine data from multiple tables. Get a list of all the authors and the ISBNs of the books they ve authored, sorted by last name then first name. Get a list of all the authors and the titles of the books they ve authored, sorted by last name then first; for each author sort the titles alphabetically. Get a list of all the book titles grouped by author, sorted by last name then first; for a given author sort the titles alphabetically.
