One Stop Shopping How to get to information without drilling down through a gazillion layers or being a GIS power user
Our Mission Managing fish and wildlife resources for their long-term well-being and the benefit of people. Monitor marine, freshwater & wildlife resources and habitats Develop and implement techniques for restoring plant and animal species and their habitats Provide technical support when oil spills and human-related or natural disasters occur Monitor red tides and provide technical support for state and local government public health concerns Provide fish and wildlife research results to state and local governments
Our Customers Fish and Wildlife Scientists Law Enforcement Resource Managers State (FWC, DEP, DOA) County Local Partners Federal (NEP, NOAA, USCG, USACE) State (WMDs( WMDs)
Enterprise Goals for FWC GIS Replace desktop GIS for casual users by deploying an enterprise solution that uses ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, Google Earth and Adobe products Employ a truly geo-spatial solution recognizing that all data are inherently geo-spatial One stop shopping for accessing data that allows for fast searching of the FWC Oracle databases through an application that indexes keywords and returns Google Desktop -like results. (Geo-indexer)
Enterprise Goals for FWC GIS Create Project Finder application to access metadata on all FWC projects to facilitate cooperation among scientists Create a Web based Environmental Analysis GIS (EAGIS) with true spatial clipping and analysis functionality Create an InfOasis application that allows users to customize their desktop and accesses the Geo-indexer to drill through the variety of FWC data sources Employ Web services to connect to broad range of data suppliers and applications
OK. Got the Plan. Now. How Do We Do This?
Visit select staff one on one. What data are out there? Data Inventory Who is responsible or knowledgeable about the data? What formats are the data in? Why are the data important? Develop and enforce standards in order to facilitate data exchange. Develop a web tool for staff to enter information about their data; a web based tool that incorporates biological data. Employ the Geospatial Assessment for Marine Ecoregions (GAME) Catalog and IMS for marine data. 3 of 73
Sources of Information Interactive Mapping Services Specific GIS web projects Library FWC utilities (GIS Users Forum) FTP files Static maps Data Marts 58 office locations 17 major data marts throughout the state 3 major data warehouses Partners (NOAA, DEP)
Specific GIS Web Projects Intranet: EAGIS (CREAM) FWC Metadata FWLI DLE Corals GIS Users Forum Internet: MRGIS Blueways/CRIS GAME BCB-EB SAFMC Portal TBEP DACP (4) FKNMS Water Quality
Paper to Digital Digitize documents of value to the Agency. This is a complex and labor-intensive project. It requires identifying, preparing, scanning, indexing and serving. To date, over a thousand documents have been scanned, however, 10s, if not 100s of thousands remain. 7 of 73
Kathleen s s Whiteboard
Map Services Existing FWC Map Services Serve FWC and other GIS data over the network. Varies from easy-to to-use to advanced. Custom tools for quick analysis and simple map making. Include image files (aerial & satellite imagery, nautical charts). Metadata available for every data set served. 6 of 73
IMS and Web Applications (25+ Services)
Google-like keyword indexing Geo-Indexer Minimal interference with ArcSDE Oracle Text indexing Intersection queries optimized through SQL Accessed by all other applications FIND ArcSDE PUBLISH Geo-Indexer INTERACT Spatial Data
Geo-Indexer Series of Oracle scripts to establish database tables, view stored procedures and indices Defined series of queries against ArcSDE tables to initially populate administrative interface Admin further defines feature classes available for text and spatial indexing Admin defines specific fields within each feature class to be text indexed by Oracle
Scalability As the number of features and feature classes increases we can scale back the depth of searches and limit results to maintain performance benchmarks Staged resultsets provide users the means to delve deeper after reviewing initial results
Geo-Indexer Performance Sub-second text queries using native Oracle Text functionality Intersection across 70+ feature classes typically under 60 seconds Performance enhancements gained by internalized queries into Oracle as stored procedures Text auto complete returns suggestions from all text indexed layers based on user entry in under 2 seconds.
Map Services FWC Project Finder Map Service Click anywhere on the map of Florida to see what projects we have ongoing. Or select project using query tool (key word, project manager, status, etc.) and see where any project is going on. Select statewide or by specific sub-set. set. Charting function to view projects by county, congressional district, etc. Both spatial and non-spatial functionaliaty Accesses XML stored in Oracle 6 of 73
Project Finder
Project Finder
Map Services EAGIS (ArcGIS Server Application) Designed with the non-gis professional in mind Easy-to to-use Custom tools for quick analysis Simple map making capability True spatial clipping for Resources at Risk reporting Gazetteer for ease of locating AOI Standard SQL or structured queries 6 of 73
Map Services EAGIS Users can upload files (shapefile, DBF) Users can design custom queries Users can create own AOI from point, line or polygon Users can bookmark frequently accessed maps

When all is said and done, we hope to Provide our users with information without drilling down through a gazillion layers or being a GIS power user Have the ability to pull heterogeneous data and applications from multiple sources onto the desktop Though distributed data systems, we will search, retrieve, and view data in a client-server environment. By employing Web Services, we will connect to a broad range of data suppliers and applications
