4 Purpose, Terms & Conditions The purpose of this document is to inform Customers and Partners of the appropriate hardware sizing which will support Microsoft Dynamics NAV for up to 250 users. Please review and understand the following before using this document for deployment: The information provided and the recommendations made are based on existing Customer environments and lab-tested environmental designs. These designs do contain margins of error that can be reduced with additional testing and research of the specific customer environment. Do not use this document when sizing environments that exceed 250 concurrent users or transaction lines posted per hour (payments, purchase invoices, purchase receipts, sales invoices, sales shipments ) All implementations utilizing these guidelines should include a performance testing cycle as well as a database settings and index tuning analysis prior to production implementation. If the prospect has a high level of transaction volume or other extraneous factors exist which could hinder performance or introduce additional complexities, the recommendations in this document may be inadequate and should not be followed. As a result of this document, you are not authorized to make any warranties, guarantees or representations on behalf of Microsoft and Microsoft cannot certify, warrant, guarantee or otherwise validate that your customer deployment will be successful. 5 Executive Overview The purpose of this document is to provide customers and partners with the proper information to understand the infrastructure and hardware which supports the Microsoft Dynamics NAV solution. It includes different technologies: Microsoft Dynamics NAV Database Server Microsoft Dynamics NAV option for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Microsoft Dynamics NAV option for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Server Microsoft Windows 2003 Server 5

6 Microsoft Dynamics NAV Environment Overview Microsoft Dynamics NAV Database Server Microsoft Dynamics NAV Database Server enables many users to share common information that is stored in one database on a server. Microsoft Dynamics NAV 4.0 Database Server was designed specifically for and is tightly integrated with the Microsoft Dynamics NAV application. Microsoft Dynamics NAV Database Server is easy to set up and configure. It doesn t require a dedicated person maintaining it. It is possible to run two or more Microsoft Dynamics NAV Database Servers with the same database. With this configuration you could, for example, have one server running TCP/IP and another one running NetBIOS on the same database. 6

7 Microsoft Dynamics NAV option for Microsoft SQL Server Microsoft Dynamics NAV can run on Microsoft SQL Server. Microsoft SQL Server is integrated with C/SIDE and provides additional features such as Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data warehousing. Microsoft SQL Server Option for Microsoft Dynamics NAV gives you the support to securely grow your business. 7

8 Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Server Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Server is a middle-tier server that can run as a Microsoft Windows NT service. It makes Microsoft Dynamics NAV data and business logic available to external applications. It is a key component in the architecture of e-commerce and web-based solutions for Microsoft Dynamics NAV. It is possible to run two or more Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Servers with the same database to scale-up your architecture if more than 10 XML documents from Microsoft Biztalk Server need to be processed per minute for example. 8

9 It is also possible to run two or more Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Servers with the same database to exchange data with different external applications: one Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Server to exchange data with Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server and another one to exchange data with hand-held devices for example. 9

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard is the typical version of SQL Server that is recommended for customers with transaction volumes that do not exceed 5,000 lines per hour per module. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise is the typical version of SQL Server that is recommended for customers with transactions that do not exceed 10,000 lines per hour per module. Note that Microsoft Windows 2003, both Standard and Enterprise s, requires Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 or later to be applied. * Above 100 concurrent users, Microsoft Dynamics NAV option for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is recommended. Customers running more than 100 concurrent users should use Microsoft Dynamics NAV option for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 except in the following scenarios: Customers using database authentication. Customers running the Business Analytics feature for Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Customers running the Business Notification feature for Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Customers running the Commerce Gateway feature for Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Customers running the Commerce Portal feature for Microsoft Dynamics NAV. The above exceptions apply to Microsoft Dynamics NAV version 4.0, version 4.0 SP1 and version 4.0 SP2. 12
