Chapter 1. Statistics Builder Overview Statistic Domains The Tivoli Statistics Builder is used to define Tivoli statistics from the Windows NT Performance Monitor database, an ASCII file, an ODBC database, or SNMP variables. It is invoked from the Tivoli Enterprise Manager. A statistic is a named value that can be used in Tivoli rules. Statistics may contain either numeric values or alphanumeric character strings. The Tivoli Statistics Builder allows you to define how certain statistics obtain their values. When a Tivoli rule executes, the value of each statistic referenced is obtained according to this definition. The left side of the Tivoli Statistics Builder s main window shows the view of the network. Click on any computer to define or view Tivoli statistics for that computer. The right side of the Tivoli Statistics Builder s main window has five tabs, one for each of the categories of statistics: v v v v v The Performance Monitor tab of the Tivoli Statistics Builder displays the list of statistic domains currently defined from the Windows NT Performance Monitor database. Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL is shipped with statistic domains defined for many of the Windows NT Performance monitor objects. If you have layered or third-party software that creates additional Windows NT Performance monitor objects, you may use the Tivoli Statistics Builder to define new statistic domains for these objects. The ASCII File tab on the Tivoli Statistics Builder displays the list of statistic domains currently defined from ASCII files. The Tivoli Statistics Builder can define additional statistic domains from any ASCII file in tabular format. The ODBC Database tab displays the list of statistic domains currently defined from ODBC databases. The Tivoli Statistics Builder can define additional statistic domains from any ODBC database. The SNMP tab displays the list of statistic domains currently defined from SNMP variables. The Tivoli Statistics Builder can define additional statistic domains from any SNMP variable. The COM tab displays the list of statistic domains currently defined from COM objects. The Tivoli Statistics Builder can define additional statistic domains from any COM object. A statistic domain is a group of statistics collected from the same source. The following information is displayed for each statistic domain: v The name of the statistic domain This name uniquely identifies the statistic domain. v How the statistic domain was defined This can either be original or user. An original definition is what was shipped with Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL. A user definition is either a new statistic domain added by the user or a statistic domain that has been modified. An original definition can not be removed. A user definition can either be removed or restored to its original definition, depending on whether or not there is an original definition. v The statistic domain type 1

v This is normally Scalar or Enumerated. In a scalar statistic domain, each statistic has one value. For example, each statistic in the memory statistic domain has one value (on one computer). In an enumerated statistic domain, each statistic has multiple values one for each instance of the statistic domain. An instance is one occurrence in an enumerated statistic domain. For example, the process executing the Tivoli Event Monitor is an instance in the process statistic domain. For example, the process statistic domain is enumerated because there are multiple processes on your computer. Every process statistic has a value for each process on your computer. However, for statistic domains defined from the Windows NT performance Monitor database, this can also contain Does not exist or Mismatch. Does not exist means that the statistic domain does not exist as an object in the Windows NT Performance Monitor database, and therefore these statistics can not be collected. Mismatch means that the statistic domain type ( Scalar or Enumerated ) differs from the object in the Windows NT Performance Monitor database. The Fix mismatch operation may be used to change the statistic domain type to match the object in the Windows NT Performance Monitor database. The statistic domain s description Defining a New Statistic Domain Modifying a Statistic Domain Importing a Statistic Domain Exporting a Statistic Domain To define a new statistic domain for the currently selected tab: 1. From the Domain menu, click Add. 2. Define the statistic domain in the domain window and Click OK. 3. The new statistic domain is added to the list. To modify a statistic domain: 1. Select the statistic domain in the list. 2. From the Domain menu, click Modify. 3. Make the desired changes in the domain window and Click OK. For ASCII File, ODBC Database and SNMP statistic domains, you may define a new statistic domain for the currently selected tab by importing it from an external definition file. An external definition file is created by exporting a statistic domain. To import a statistic domain: 1. From the Domain menu, click Import. 2. Select the external definition file from the file selection window and click OK. 3. The new statistic domain is added to the list based on the definition contained within the external definition file. For ASCII File, ODBC Database and SNMP statistic domains, you may export the currently selected statistic domain to an external definition file. This file contains the definition of the statistic domain and may be used to import the statistic domain at another site. To export a statistic domain: 2 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Statistics Builder

Removing a Statistic Domain 1. Select the statistic domain in the list. 2. From the Domain Menu, click Export. 3. Choose a file and folder from the file selection window and click OK to create the external definition file. A statistic domain can be removed if it was defined by the user. To remove a statistic domain: 1. Select the statistic domain in the list. 2. From the Domain menu, click Remove. 3. The statistic domain is removed from the list. Restoring a Statistic Domain to its Original Definition A statistic domain can be restored to its original definition if it had an original definition, and was then modified by the user. To restore a statistic domain to its original definition: 1. Select the statistic domain in the list. 2. From the Domain menu, click Restore Original. 3. The statistic domain is restored to its original definition. Copying a Statistic Domain to a Computer or Computers A statistic domain can be copied to a single computer, all the computers in a domain or all the computers in the enterprise. To copy a statistic domain: 1. Select the statistic domain in the list. 2. From the Domain menu, click Copy. 3. In the Copy to window, select one of the three options and click OK: v Copy to the entire enterprise. v v Copy to each computer in this domain. Select the domain from the pull-down list. Copy to this computer. Select the computer from the pull-down list. Automatically Fixing a Statistic Domain Mismatch You can automatically fix a statistic domain mismatch, if it has a type of mismatch. This can occur only on the Performance Monitor tab, and means that the statistic domain type ( Scalar or Enumerated ) differs from the object in the Windows NT Performance Monitor database. To automatically fix a mismatch: 1. Select the statistic domain in the list. 2. From the Domain menu, click Fix Mismatch. 3. The statistic domain is changed to match the corresponding object in the Windows NT Performance Monitor database. Chapter 1. Statistics Builder Overview 3

Chapter 2. Performance Monitor Statistics Statistics Defined from the Windows NT Performance Monitor A statistic domain defined from the Windows NT performance Monitor database corresponds to a Windows NT object. Each counter in the Windows NT object can be defined as a Tivoli statistic. For enumerated domains, the instance name can also be defined as a Tivoli statistic. When these statistics are used in Tivoli rules, Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL obtains a value for them by retrieving the value for the associated counter (or instance name) in the Windows NT object. Statistics Defined from the Windows NT Performance Monitor - General Information Tab The choices for statistic domains are the Windows NT objects that are not currently associated with Tivoli statistic domains. Select the statistic domain name to add from the list of choices. When modifying a statistic domain, you can not modify the statistic domain name. The statistic domain type (enumerated or scalar) will be displayed, as will the number of Windows NT counters that are not currently associated with Tivoli statistics. The quickest way to define a statistic for each Windows NT counter is to click Add All. This will add a statistic for each unused Windows NT counter, generating the Tivoli statistic name and statistic description. For more control over the naming of statistics, go to the Statistics tab and add statistics individually. Statistics Defined from the Windows NT Performance Monitor - Description Tab Optionally enter a description of the statistic domain. Statistics Defined from the Windows NT Performance Monitor - Statistics Tab Build the list of statistics in the statistic domain. You can define one statistic for each counter in the Windows NT object. For enumerated statistic domains, you can also define a statistic which corresponds to the instance name of the object. The statistics defined for the statistic domain are listed alphabetically under Current statistics. You may perform the following operations: Adding a Statistic in a Performance Monitor Statistic Domain To add a statistic to the statistic domain: 1. Select the Windows NT counter. Only those counters not currently associated with statistics will be available. INSTANCE specifies the name of the instance. 2. A Tivoli statistic name will be generated. 3. The data type will be displayed. 4. The statistic description will be generated. 5. The context statistic box will be checked for the instance name. 5

6. Optionally change the statistic name, the statistic description or the context status. 7. Click Add. 8. The statistic is added to the list. To add a statistic for each unused Windows NT counter using the generated statistic name and description, click Add All. Make any changes and click Replace. 5. The statistic is modified in the list. Removing a Statistic in a Performance Monitor Statistic Domain To remove a statistic: 2. Click Remove. 3. The statistic is removed from the list. 6 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Statistics Builder

Chapter 3. ASCII File Statistics Statistics Defined from an ASCII File When you define statistics from an ASCII file, it allows Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to convert data output by utilities or other applications into Tivoli statistics. In some cases, Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL can be instructed to execute an operating system command that will create this file. In other cases, the file will already exist. The ASCII file must be in tabular form, where the columns of the table are delimited by either white space (spaces or tabs) or a defined delimiter character (such as a comma or semi-colon). Each column corresponds to a Tivoli statistic, and each record corresponds to an instance of an enumerated statistic domain. When a Tivoli rule references these statistics, it executes for each record in the file. An ASCII file with one record may be used to define a scalar statistic domain. General Information Tab v The statistic domain name Enter the name that identifies the statistic domain. This name must be unique across all of Tivoli s statistic domains. When modifying a statistic domain, you can not modify the statistic domain name. v The OS Command Optionally enter any operating system command that Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL will execute prior to reading the specified file. This command is normally used to create or append to the file. v The Data file Enter the full path name of the ASCII file, or click Browse to find the file. v Delimiters Enter the delimiter or list of delimiters used to separate the columns in the specified data file. You may select one of the commonly used delimiters from the pull-down list or type the delimiter or delimiters directly into the box. The term WHITESPACE refers to any number of spaces or tabs. If you enter a list of delimiters, separate each delimiter with a comma. Note: If you want to use a comma as your delimiter, you will have to enclose it in quotes (e.g., or,,#). v File processing options See ASCII File Processing Options on page 8. v Skip Options See ASCII File Skip Options on page 9. Description Tab Optionally enter a description of the statistic domain. Statistics Tab Build the list of statistics in the statistic domain. You should define one statistic for each column (as defined by the delimiters) of the file. The statistics defined for the statistic domain are listed under Current statistics. The order of statistics in this list should correspond to the order of columns in the file. 7

You may perform the following operations: v Add a statistic See Adding a Statistic in an ASCII File Statistic Domain on page 9. v Modify a statistic See Modifying a Statistic in an ASCII File Statistic Domain on page 9. v Remove a statistic See Removing a Statistic in an ASCII File Statistic Domain on page 10. v Move a statistic up See Moving a Statistic Up in an ASCII File Statistic Domain on page 10. v Move a statistic down See Moving a Statistic Down in an ASCII File Statistic Domain on page 10. v The context options define how to uniquely identify a record in the file. ASCII File Processing Options ASCII File Context Options Select one of the following three file processing options: v Read entire file at each collection Each time a Tivoli rule that references any of the statistics in this statistic domain executes, the specified ASCII file is read and processed in its entirety. v Read from end of file after the first collection The first time a Tivoli rule that references any of the statistics in this domain executes, the specified ASCII file is read in its entirety. During subsequent executions of the rule, only newly added records in the file are read and processed. v Read from end of file for every collection Each time a Tivoli rule that references any of the statistics in this statistic domain executes, only newly added records in the file are read and processed. If this option is selected, no records of the file are processed for the first execution of the rule. The context statistic in an enumerated statistic domain uniquely identifies an instance in the domain. When defining statistics from an ASCII file, the context statistic should uniquely identify each record of the file. Select one of the following three context options: v Context statistic defined in statistic list If this option is selected, you must specify the context statistic as one of the statistics defined in the Statistics tab. Use this option if there is a column in the file which will never have any duplicate values. v Generate a context statistic If this option is selected, Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL will generate a statistic named RECORD_NUMBER_domain, where domain is the name of the statistic domain. Use this option if all columns in the file may have duplicate values. v Scalar domain Select this option to define a scalar domain. This option is meaningful when only one record of the file is processed. 8 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Statistics Builder

ASCII File Skip Options The following skip options allow you to specify that certain records of the file should not be processed: v Skip heading If checked, the number of records specified at the beginning of the file are skipped. This option takes precedence over other skip options. v Skip pattern If checked, records which match the specified pattern are skipped. v Skip to pattern If checked, all records up to and including the first occurrence of the specified pattern are skipped. The first record of the file processed is the one that follows the record containing the specified pattern. v Skip from pattern If checked, all records after and including the first occurrence of the specified pattern are skipped. The last record of the file processed is the one that precedes the record containing the specified pattern. v Skip bad data If checked, records where integer and float statistics can not be correctly converted are skipped. v Skip long records If checked, records which have more columns than the number of statistics defined are skipped. v Skip short records If checked, records which have fewer columns than the number of statistics defined are skipped. v Skip blank records If checked, blank records in the file are skipped. Adding a Statistic in an ASCII File Statistic Domain To add a statistic to the statistic domain: 1. Enter the statistic name. 2. Select the data type. 3. For string statistics, enter the length. 4. Optionally enter a description for the statistic. 5. Check the Context statistic box if this statistic uniquely identifies a record in the file. 6. Click Add. 7. The statistic is added to the list. Modifying a Statistic in an ASCII File Statistic Domain To modify a statistic: 2. Click Modify. 3. The information at the top of the tab is loaded with the current information. 4. Make any changes and click Replace. 5. The statistic is modified in the list. Chapter 3. ASCII File Statistics 9

The statistic is moved up one place in the list Moving a Statistic Down in an ASCII File Statistic Domain To move a statistic down in the list: 2. Click Move Down. 3. The statistic is moved down one place in the list. 10 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Statistics Builder

Chapter 4. ODBC Database Statistics Statistics Defined from an ODBC Database When you define statistics from an ODBC database, it allows Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to convert data retrieved from the database into Tivoli statistics. Each column retrieved from the database corresponds to a Tivoli statistic, and each row retrieved from the database corresponds to an instance of an enumerated statistic domain. When a Tivoli rule references these statistics, it executes for each row retrieved from the database. Statistics Defined from an ODBC Database - General Information Tab v Statistic domain name Enter the name that identifies the statistic domain. This name must be unique across all of Tivoli s statistic domains. When modifying a statistic domain, you can not modify the statistic domain name. v Data source (DSN) Enter the ODBC data source name used to access the database. Check Close the data source after each collection to close the database after retrieving information from it. If unchecked, the database will remain open. v Select statement Enter the statement used to query the database. v Computer Optionally enter the computer name that stores the database. A blank entry refers to the local computer. This corresponds to the ODBC HOST attribute. v Connection options Optionally enter the ODBC attribute/value pairs that are required to properly access and process the database. v User ID Optionally enter the user identification string to use to log into the database. This corresponds to the ODBC UID attribute. If blank, the value from the registry entry for the database will be used (if one exists). v Password Optionally enter the password associated with the user id used to log into the database. This corresponds to the ODBC PWD attribute. If blank, the value from the registry entry for the database will be used (if one exists). v Database processing options See ODBC Database Processing Options on page 12. Statistics Defined from an ODBC Database - Description Tab Optionally enter a description of the statistic domain. Statistics Defined from an ODBC Database - Statistics Tab Build the list of statistics in the statistic domain. You should define one statistic for each column extracted from the database. The statistics defined for the statistic 11

domain are listed under Current statistics. The order of statistics in this list should correspond to the order of columns extracted from the database. You may perform the following operations: v Add a statistic See Adding a Statistic in an ODBC Database Statistic Domain on page 13. v Modify a statistic See Modifying a Statistic in an ODBC Database Statistic Domain on page 13. v Remove a statistic See Removing a Statistic in an ODBC Database Statistic Domain on page 13. v Move a statistic up See Moving a Statistic Up in an ODBC Database Statistic Domain on page 13. v Move a statistic down See Moving a Statistic Down in an ODBC Database Statistic Domain on page 13. v The context options define how to uniquely identify a row in the database. ODBC Database Processing Options Select one of the following two database processing options: v Read entire database at each collection Each time a Tivoli rule that references any of the statistics in this statistic domain executes, the query to the database specified in the Select statement is issued and all returned rows are processed. v Read new rows defined by this date/time column The first time a Tivoli rule that references any of the statistics in this domain executes, the query to the database specified in the Select statement is issued and all returned rows are processed. During subsequent executions of the rule, only newly added rows in the database are processed. You must specify a date/time column in the database that contains the date and time the row was added to the database. ODBC Database Context Options The context statistic in an enumerated statistic domain uniquely identifies an instance in the domain. When defining statistics from an ODBC database, the context statistic should uniquely identify each row of data extracted from the database. Select one of the following two context options: v Context statistic defined in statistic list If this option is selected, you must specify the context statistic as one of the statistics defined in the Statistics tab. Use this option if there is a column in the database which will never have any duplicate values. v Generate a context statistic If this option is selected, Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL will generate a statistic named RECORD_NUMBER_domain, where domain is the name of the statistic domain. Use this option if all columns in the database may have duplicate values. 12 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Statistics Builder

Chapter 5. SNMP Statistics Statistics Defined from SNMP Variables When you define statistics from SNMP variables, it allows Tivoli to convert data in the SNMP variables into Tivoli statistics. Each SNMP variable defined corresponds to a Tivoli statistic. This is the first of two steps required to monitor SNMP variables. In this step you associate SNMP variables with Tivoli statistics, independent of the IP address of the SNMP device. The second step is the creation of a rule that uses these statistics with the Tivoli Rule Designer. In the rule s selections, specify the IP addresses of the SNMP devices you want to monitor. The selection statistic is the name of the statistic domain followed by _IP_NAME. For example, the selection statistic for a statistic domain named CISCO is CISCO_IP_NAME. Statistics Defined from SNMP Variables - General Information Tab v Statistic domain name Enter the name that identifies the statistic domain. This name must be unique across all of Tivoli s statistic domains. When modifying a statistic domain, you can not modify the statistic domain name. Statistics Defined from SNMP Variables - Description Tab Optionally enter a description of the statistic domain. Statistics Defined from SNMP Variables - Statistics Tab Build the list of statistics in the statistic domain. You should define one statistic for each SNMP variable. The statistics defined for the statistic domain are listed under Current statistics. The statistic is removed from the list. 16 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Statistics Builder

Chapter 6. COM Statistics Statistics Defined from a COM Object When you define statistics from a COM object, it allows Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to convert the parameters of one or more methods of the COM object into Tivoli statistics. Each parameter corresponds to a Tivoli statistic. When you define Tivoli statistics for a parameter of a method, you must define Tivoli statistics for all of the parameters of the method. Parameters are either passed to or returned from a method of a COM object (or both). When a parameter is passed to a method, you must define the value passed as either a constant or a variable enclosed in curly braces (i.e. {VALUE1}). When a variable is passed, it must be defined in the rule process default variable file at the time the rule executes. For parameters that are used only to pass input to the method, the value of the corresponding Tivoli statistic is equal to the value passed. For parameters that return a value from the method, the value of the corresponding Tivoli statistic is the returned value from the method. Statistics collected from a COM object are always scalar. Statistics Defined from a COM Object - General Information Tab On this tab, enter the statistic domain name, the COM object s program ID, and the method or methods of that COM object for which you want to define Tivoli statistics. v Statistic domain name Enter the name that identifies the statistic domain. This name must be unique across all of Tivoli s statistic domains. When modifying a statistic domain, you can not modify the statistic domain name. v COM program ID Enter the program ID of the COM object. You may click Browse to show a list of program IDs for the COM objects found on your computer. After entering a program ID or selecting a program ID from the list, all of the methods for the COM object are displayed. When modifying a statistic domain, you can not modify the program ID. v Methods Select a method. You can now define Tivoli statistics for the parameters of this method on the statistics tab. For each method selected, you must define a Tivoli statistic for all of its parameters.
