5 Host-based Mirroring Volume Mirroring: Logical Volume Manager (LVM) synchronously mirrors local writes to a set of remote volumes Local and remote disks appear as single set of disks Remote volumes can only be located across small distances Host-based Replication: Specialized drivers in primary server package local writes in logical messages Synchronously / asynchronously send them to remote hosts Transport is over IP: may be deployed over wide distances Need to maintain specialized logs to keep track of write-ordering Secondary data volumes cannot be accessed by applications while replication is in progress

7 Hardware-based Mirroring Storage array controllers at the primary site mirror changes to a similar storage array at the secondary site Protocols supported include ESCON, FICON, Fibre Channel, IP controlled by specialized adapters loaded with appropriate microcode As I/Os occur at the primary server, data is written to the cache of the source array, and placed in a queue The link adapter takes the first entry of the queue and moves it across the link to the mirrored array Supports synchronous/asynchronous writes Target arrays unavailable for data access

11 Oracle Data Guard Oracle s disaster recovery solution for Oracle data Feature of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition (EE) Automates the creation and maintenance of one or more transactionally consistent copies (standby) of the production (or primary) database If the primary database becomes unavailable (disasters, maintenance), a standby database can be activated and assume the primary role Data Guard combined with RAC provides the basis of Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA)

15 Data Protection Protection from data corruptions Any system component can fail and cause data corruptions: NIC, Memory, Volume Manager, File System, OS, HBA, SAN Switch, Disk Controller, RAID, Storage Array, etc. the DR solution must ensure that secondary data is also not corrupted Data Guard: best protection from data corruptions: databases loosely coupled, Redo Apply / SQL Apply validates redo before applying Stretch Clusters & Remote Mirroring: errors in storage stack / corrupted bits, propagate to, and affect the whole configuration

Protection from local & widespread disasters Data Guard standby databases can span thousands of miles: good protection from local & regional disasters (e.g. hurricanes, power outages) Distance limitation in Stretch Clusters & some Remote Mirroring solutions: protection only from localized disasters (e.g. data center fires) Protection of filesystem data Data Guard can protect data only in Oracle databases Stretch Clusters & Remote Mirroring: can also protect data in filesystems

Failover following an outage Data Guard: Integrated switchover/failover; in Oracle Database 10g, Real Time Apply and Fast-Start Failover speed up the failover process even more, no manual intervention needed Stretch Clusters: if disaster survived, very fast automatic recovery, with very small brown-out (few seconds) Remote Mirroring: manual restart needed after failover Fast automatic reinstatement of old primary Data Guard: after failover, old primary automatically reinstated and resynchronized as new standby Stretch Clusters and Remote Mirroring: may need manual resynchronization of old primary volumes
