10 Autgenerated Metadata Metadata is nt always created intentinally; sme is autgenerated thrugh sftware prgrams (e.g., Micrsft Office, Adbe Phtshp, SPSS) and devices (e.g., scanners, digital cameras, digital recrders). Always check these metadata fields under Prperties in the navigatin windw fr accuracy. Example: Prperties windw, Micrsft Office (access via the File tab f the main navigatin menu in Office by selecting File Prperties.)

Mre simply, it is infrmatin that is created and stred alngside cntent (such as a thesis r dissertatin) in rder t help users find and understand that cntent. The quality f the metadata yu prvide is key t ensuring the future accessibility and usability f yur wrk. Fr every research file yu create, yu shuld als prduce metadata describing: Wh created the cntent? What is it? When and Where was it created? Hw and Why was it develped? Why might yu need metadata? if yur research prduces images, audi, vide, sftware, datasets, r ther nn-text cmpnents, these may nt be encmpassed within the metadata cllected during the submissin prcess. In rder t make sure these files are discverable and usable in the future, yu will need t actively create metadata and stre it with the files. ETD metadata tips: 1. Yur abstract needs a clear descriptin and keywrds relevant t yur wrk. 2. Be careful with ver-reliance n spell-check functins. Fr example, Micrsft Office des nt spellcheck capital letters, which can impact titles. 3. Create keywrds that are nt in yur title. This will increase the discverability f yur wrk. 4. Define any acrnyms yu use (repeat them in bth letters and in natural language). 5. Prfread all f yur metadata, including department name and advisr name, prir t submissin. T help make sure that yu and yur readers will be able t understand what these additinal files are and hw they may be referenced, used, r built upn, yu can develp a simple spreadsheet-based inventry f these items. This inventry shuld clearly identify hw many additinal files yu are including, what they are, wh created them, and what rights and licensing infrmatin they are gverned by. Submit this inventry spreadsheet as part f yur ETD package.

12 Activity Chse three (3) dcuments yu are currently wrking n, preferably in different frmats (Wrd, Excel, etc.). Open the Prperties tab in the File menu and examine the data yu see under Summary. Are yu listed as the dcument s authr? If nt, this is a gd time t update it! Review the fields and update them as needed, making sure t insert the mst current infrmatin cncerning the prject title, categry, and keywrds.
