1 REV OBSERVER for WINDOWS Purpose This document is a step by step guide for installing REV OBSERVER software from the Internet on to a WINDOWS Operating System. Requirements Normal Installation None To use with MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server For MySQL ( o MySQL version 5.1 or later installed and started. o MyODBC driver version or later installed. For Microsoft SQL Server o Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or later installed and started. o Allow for Trusted Connection. Planning To use the Engine with Alias Name, you may need to consider the following As the Software will need to connect and retrieve the Services Status (Engine Status), Date/Time using the Alias Name, it ll need to know where to connect to. You can define that in Individual Host table, where it s needed, or A Central DNS Server. Procedures Follow each of the instructions and mark them after completion Pre-Install Checklist Check that you have at least 30 MB free for each REV OBSERVER software installation. Note that REV OBSERVER writes log files in this area. Install by a user with the Administrative rights. 1

2 Download the Software Go to on the Internet. Select Downloads on the top navigation bar. Select REV OBSERVER in the list. Select the Software (Server/Client) you want to download. Enter your Username and Password. If you do not have one, select Register to request one from us. Save the download file to your machine. Install the Software The Installation Package for Windows is the Wise Installer. You ll just need to double-click on the download file(s) to start installing the software. You should see the following screen: Click Next to continue. 2

3 You will be presented with the Region screen: Choose the region where you live, then click Next. 3

4 You will now be asked for the location that you want to install the software. (By default, the software will be installed into C:\Program Files\Revsoft folder.) Choose your prefer location, or leave it as it is. Then click Next again to continue. 4

5 The next screen will ask you to choose the location or create a new one in the Program Manager group to add the shortcuts for REV OBSERVER software. Select the location or enter a new one, then click Next. You are now ready to install the software. The Server software will be installed with 30 days trial code. 5

6 When you install REV OBSERVER Engine, if you have previously installed the Engine on the same machine you will be able to migrate the old data to the new database. Deselect the Upgrade checkbox will allow you install the software without old data and a new 30 days trial code. (You should also deselect the Upgrade checkbox if you have been using MySQL as your database server. We ll be using the Upsize wizard, shown later in this Instruction, to perform the Upgrade with MySQL.) 6

7 If you deselect the Upgrade check box, or this is your new Installation, you ll be asked to specify the Alias Name. You can enter a Name here (see Planning for more information), or use *SYSTEM, which will then use the Real System Name. Click Next to have the installation wizard starts copying files. 7

8 The installation wizard will show you the copy files progress. After finishing the copy of all the necessary files, you can click on the Finish button to exit the installation wizard. 8

9 Follow all the installation steps above to install the Windows Clients like REV OBSERVER Definitions, REV OBSERVER Operations, etc The installation of these clients can be performed on the same machine with REV OBSERVER Engine, or on another machine. When install the Clients on another machine, remember to use our DSN Creator Utility to create a DSN that point to the Observer database where the Engine connects to. (The installation of REV OBSERVER Engine will automatically create a DSN for you. So if you install the Clients on the same machine with the Engine, you don t need to create a DSN again.) The DSN Creator can be found from the RevSoft Application Center -> Utilities -> DSN Creator, or from any RevSoft applications by using File -> Create DSN menu. You are now ready to start using REV OBSERVER for WINDOWS. 9

10 Start/Stop the Engine Start any REV OBSERVER Clients on your Windows machine. Select the System you want to connect to on the Configured Systems tree. Then look for the Engine button on the Toolbar. Click on it will show you the Engine window and you will be able to start/stop the Server from there. Server is not running: Server is running: 10

11 Upsizing If you don t want to use the shipped Microsoft Access database file as your data storage, you have a choice to use MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server as your database server. This process called Upsizing. Follow each of the instructions and mark them after completion: Log on to the system you want to perform the upsizing. Start REV OBSERVER Engine. Select the system name on the Configured Systems tree. It is recommended that the selected system should be the logon system the Upsizing should be performed locally. Select the Engine button on the Toolbar and stop the Observer Engine services. Start REV VIEW Engine, if one s installed for the selected system. Select the Engine button on the Toolbar and stop the View Engine services. Close REV VIEW Engine program. On REV OBSERVER Engine interface, go to Options -> Upsize menu. Select either Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL from the sub menu. 11

12 Upsize to Microsoft SQL Server If you select the Upsize to SQL Server option, you will be presented with this screen: Enter the SQL Server name or select it from the drop-down list box. Update your login details for the selected SQL Server. The best choice is to use Use Trusted Connection option. Click Next to continue. 12

13 Upsize to MySQL If you select the Upsize to MySQL option, you will be presented with this screen: Enter MySQL server name default is localhost. The default port number that you can use to connect to the selected MySQL server is If you have installed MySQL with different listening port, please use it here. Then enter your login details for this server. The login details that you can use should have the CREATE DATABASE privileges. Click Next to continue. 13

14 REV OBSERVER is now ready to perform the upsizing. Click Next to continue. 14

15 The wizard starts the Upsizing by creating the required database, its objects and copies all the data from the old Microsoft Access database file. 15

16 When the Upsizing wizard finish, you will be represented another screen. You can check the processing status to see if any errors have occurred. After reviewing the status, click Next to continue. 16

17 The process is now completed. You can click the Finish button to exit the wizard. The wizard will remove the old DSN for REV OBSERVER. Please close all the programs that use this DSN (e.g. REV OBSERVER Engine, REV OBSERVER Definitions, REV OBSERVER Operations etc ). Create a new DSN (for SQL Server or MySQL connection) refer to the following section Restart REV OBSERVER Engine and Clients. 17

18 Create New DSN Run the DSN Creator utility. This utility can be found from the RevSoft Application Center -> Utilities -> DSN Creator, or from any RevSoft applications by using File -> Create DSN menu. You will see this window appears on your screen: Click the Add button to create a new DSN 18

19 You should see another screen come up. In this screen, select the platform (e.g. Microsoft Windows etc ) and then select the database type from the supported database type(s) dropdown list. It should be either Microsoft SQL Server Database or MySQL Database, depending on which database server you have upsized your REV OBSERVER database to. 19

20 If you have selected Microsoft SQL Server Database as your database type, you will be represented with this screen: Select or enter the Microsoft SQL Server name from the Database Server dropdown list. The host name is the system that you want to work with. You can also choose to attach the.obs at the end of the DSN s name in case you got more than 1 DSN for different module (e.g..obs,.msg,.flw,.grd,.vew, etc ) by selecting the Attach Module Information option. And as mentioned earlier, the SQL Server should be configured to allow Trusted Connections, so that you can choose to have the Use Trusted Connection option selected when you create the DSN on the machine where the Observer Engine resides. Click Finish to exit the wizard and create the new DSN. 20

21 If you have selected MySQL Database as your database type, you will be represented with this screen: Enter the Host name for the system that you want to work with. Enter the name for MySQL server where the database resides. The default listening port for MySQL is If you have installed MySQL with different listening port, please enter it in the Port text field. When you upsize the Observer Engine Access database to MySQL, the wizard has created a user called revsoft with blank password in MySQL server and granted its access to the newly created Observer database in MySQL. The Observer Engine use this username when access the Observer database in MySQL. So, you should enter revsoft as the username and leave the Password field blank. Select the revsch database from the Database dropdown list. Same with the above section of Microsoft SQL Server, you can also choose to attach the.obs at the end of the DSN s name in case you got more than 1 DSN for different module (e.g..obs,.msg,.flw,.grd,.vew, etc ) by selecting the Attach Module Information option. Click the Test button if you want to make sure the connection successfully, or just click Finish to exit the wizard and create the new DSN. 21
