1 Branding Guide Overview The Illinois Wesleyan University Branding Guide is designed to provide clear information on the proper use of approved graphics, colors and fonts for any application of the IWU brand. Our purpose is to guarantee a clear and consistent brand image wherever and whenever Illinois Wesleyan is represented in any print, digital or apparel format. Any document, item or digital outreach created for an outside audience must adhere to the brand guidelines outlined below. Any attempt to use the following graphics or wordmarks outside of the standards represented in this guide are strictly prohibited. Requests for exceptions should be submitted directly to the Director of Print Services. INSTITUTIONAL SYMBOLS Over the years the University has used a number of different institutional symbols and logos in communications and promotion. Today, there are three different logos that appear on campus and in communications of various types: 1. The University Seal 2. The University Signature Wordmark 3. The University Spirit Marks The University Seal Moving forward the University seal will be reserved specifically for the use of the Offices of the President, Provost, and Advancement for specific use for formal occasions. Should you have a request to use the Seal, please contact the Director of Print Services for permission. The Seal has been chosen because its imagery is most consistent with higher education and Wesleyan s academic mission, excellence and tradition. Symbolism of the Seal The book stands for our teaching, scholarly and creative missions; The motto, Scientia Et Sapientia, points to how we teach our students to use knowledge wisely for both personal and societal benefits; The year 1850 draws attention to our history and tradition.
2 The University Signature Wordmark The primary mark for use in all general IWU communications is the University Wordmark. All business cards, letterhead, social media, web and digital marks will derive from the University Wordmark. There are four versions of the University Wordmark: 1. One color vertical 2. One color horizontal or 3. Two color vertical 4. Two color horizontal or 1 The Illinois Wesleyan University words, when used as the signature mark should never be presented without the IW design mark. The IWU words and the IW mark are always to remain as part of the logo and not separated. The spacing between the IW mark and the IWU words must remain as is.
3 Monogram Mark The IW monogram mark may be used separately from the wordmark and will be essentially used for social media and digital iconography, as well as logo wear, and other IWU promotional items. Either the one or two color version of the IW monogram are acceptable representatives of the brand. One color Two color Note: The IW spirit mark with the word Titans under it is not acceptable for use on any items academically related. 2
4 Signature Size To maintain full legibility, never reproduce the logo at widths smaller than what is shown here, either for print or screen. There is no maximum size limit, but use discretion when sizing the logo. It should never be the most dominant element on the page, but the logo instead should live comfortably and clearly as an identifying mark WIDE 1 WIDE 1.5 WIDE Using the proper vector files, the signature can be proportionaly scaled as large as necessary. Clearspace Maintaining ample clear space around the logo ensures that it remains legible and doesn t get lost within the composition. Photos, text, and graphic elements should never be placed within the clear space, as shown here. 3
5 The University Spirit Marks A separate branding guide has been designed specifically for the use of the Illinois Wesleyan Spirit Marks and Athletic Logos. It may be accessed here: There are three Spirit Marks applicable for campus-wide use. 1. The Primary Mark 2. The Monogram Mark 3. The Titan Wordmark These marks should not be changed or altered in any way and their use must adhere to the standards in this guide. These logos are intended for use only by the Illinois Wesleyan athletics department. Permission is required for use by any other entity. Only the IW monogram mark listed on page 2 is acceptable for use in any academically representative items. 4

7 INSTITUTIONAL FONTS & TYPOGRAPHY DISPLAY TYPOGRAPHY TUNGSTEN CONDENSED LIGHT MEDIUM BOLD Always set Tungsten Condensed in all caps and use it for short lines of copy. Never use it for body copy. There is no web-safe alternative for Tungsten Condensed. If you want to use this font in a web capacity, you will need to purchase a webspecific license for it. Tungsten Condensed may be licensed at: fonts/tungsten/styles/ SERIF TYPOGRAPHY Sentinel Light Light Italic Book Book Italic Medium Semibold Semibold Italic Bold Bold Italic Black Black Italic It offers a wide range of weights that can be used for subheads, and works nicely when calling out personal quotes. If this typeface is unavailable to you, or you need a web-safe alternative, Georgia or Minion may be substituted. Sentinel may be licensed at: sentinel/overview/ SANS-SERIF TYPOGRAPHY Myriad Pro Regular Italic Semibold Semibold Italic Bold Bold Italic Because of the variety of weights and styles, Myriad works best for body copy.
