3 Introduction This User s Guide is intended for users of ScanSnap PDF Converter for S500 V1.0 (hereinafter referred to as PDF Converter). PDF Converter is a tool used to correct PDF files. Some PDF files made searchable (text-recognized using OCR software) with the ScanSnap S500 may not be searchable when searched using Spotlight, which is a function available in Mac OS X s context menus. 5 System Requirements 1. System Requirements (1) Operating Systems Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional 32 bit version Microsoft Windows XP Home / Professional 32 bit version * You cannot install PDF Converter in operating systems other than these described above. An error message will appear while Installer is running and installation will not be completed. (2) Personal Computer (same requirements with ScanSnap Manager) Intel Pentium III processor 600 MHz or higher (Intel Pentium 4 processor 1.8 GHz or higher is recommended) (3) Memory (same with ScanSnap Manager) 128 MB or more (256 MB or more is recommended) (4) Disk Space 52 MB or more free space (For installation, 100 MB or more is additionally required for file cache) 4

6 Installing PDF Converter 2. Installing PDF Converter 1. Double-click on the PDFConverter.exe icon to start the installation. 2. The Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for ScanSnap PDF Converter for S500 window appears; click the [Next] button. 3. Following the on-screen instructions, install ScanSnap PDF Converter for S The InstallShield Wizard Complete window appears; click the [Finish] button. Now the installation of PDF Converter is complete. Cautions in installing PDF Converter A user with Administrators privileges must install this program An older version of PDF Converter must be uninstalled, if installed, to install the new version The pathname of the installation folder specified must be 121 characters or less. Otherwise, PDF Converter cannot be installed PDF Converter cannot be installed directly under the root folder (such as C:\) 5

7 Uninstalling PDF Converter 3. Uninstalling PDF Converter 1. In the Add or Remove Programs window, select ScanSnap PDF Converter for S500, and then click the [Change/Remove] button. 2. In the Confirm Uninstall window, click the [OK] button. 3. When uninstallation is complete, the following window appears. 4. When PDF files are corrected by using PDF Converter, log files will be output in the installation folder of PDF Converter; if you do not want to keep the log files, delete them manually. Now the uninstallation of PDF Converter is complete. Cautions in uninstalling PDF Converter A user with Administrators privileges must uninstall this program Exit PDF Converter if it is running, and then uninstall this program 6

8 PDF Files That Can Be Corrected 4. PDF Files That Can Be Corrected Files that can be corrected with PDF Converter are those use the following file extension. Extension:.pdf PDF files that are OCRed with any of the following applications ScanSnap Manager V4.0L10 - V4.0L16 ScanSnap Organizer V3.0L10 - V3.0L12 How to confirm information on a PDF file to correct (1) Start Acrobat, and then, on the File menu, select Document Properties. (2) Select the [Description] tab, and refer to Application: under Description (* 2-1) and PDF Producer: under Advanced (* 2-2). * 2-1: Before correction PFU ScanSnap Manager 4.0.X (X is a number from 10 to 16 inclusive) PFU ScanSnap Organizer 3.0.X (X is a number from 10 to 12 inclusive) * 2-2: Before correction Adobe PDF Scan Library 2.1 * Note that the following types of PDF files cannot be corrected. PDF files to which a time-stamp or a digital signature is applied Password-protected PDF files PDF files edited with Acrobat; specifically, those files modified using functions such as Recognize Text Using OCR, Reduce File Size, or Password Security and are saved 7

9 Corrected PDF Files 5. Corrected PDF Files How to confirm information on a PDF file corrected with PDF Converter (1) Start Acrobat, and then, on the File menu, select Document Properties. 10 Function Descriptions 6. Function Descriptions You can start PDF Converter: From the [Start] menu, select [All Programs] [ScanSnap PDF Converter] [ScanSnap PDF Converter]. The following are the descriptions of the ScanSnap PDF Converter for S500 dialog box. Names Folders intended for correction pathname box Functions Displays the full path of the folder specified for correction. * You cannot type in a pathname; you can select a folder using the [Browse] button. * Selecting a networked folder causes an error. Default folder (2000 / XP): C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\ [Browse] button Include subfolders... checkbox Displays a dialog box used to select a folder intended for correction. Specifies whether subfolders are also targeted for correction or not. Checked: targeted / Unchecked: not targeted (default) Back up... checkbox Specifies whether files are backed up before correction or not. Checked: backed up (default) / Unchecked: not backed up [Execute] button [Close] button Executes PDF correction. Closes this dialog box. How To Use 1) Click the [Browse] button to select a folder; select the folder that contains PDF files you want to correct. 2) Click the [Execute] button to correct the PDF files saved in the specified folder. * PDF files may be unexpectedly corrupted during correction. It is strongly recommended that the Back up PDF files before correction checkbox be checked so that loss of data is avoided. 9

11 About The Log File 7. About The Log File Log files are saved in the same level with the PDF Converter exe file (SsPdfCnv.exe) in the hierarchy with file names like SS_LOG_YYYYMMDD_hhmmss.txt. (Default name: C:\Program Files\PFU\ScanSnap\PDF Converter\) * 1: The name of PDF Converter * 2: Date executed * 3: A description of the correction result * 4: Settings configured for correction * 5: List of corrected/uncorrected files Corrected-file list format in which corrected files are described Corrected/Uncorrected: full paths of files (the reason why files are uncorrected) Corrected/Uncorrected: Corrected or Uncorrected is displayed Pathnames of files: Full paths of files targeted for correction are displayed Reason why files are uncorrected: Only for the uncorrected files, the reason is described. The reason why files are uncorrected PDF file not targeted for correction PDF file that has already been corrected PDF file for which correction is not necessary A password-locked PDF file PDF file that a timestamp or an electronic signature is applied to The file is locked Insufficient disk space PDF file edited by another application This is a PDF file other than those described in chapter 4. PDF Files That Can Be Corrected. This is a PDF file that has been corrected by using PDF Converter. This is a PDF file that is not OCRed. This is a PDF file protected with a password. This is a PDF file that a timestamp or electronic (digital) signature is applied to. This is a PDF file that was open with another application and could not be saved, or it is a read-only PDF file. Free disk space is insufficient. This is a PDF file modified by using another application. 10
