Excel is a spreadsheet program in the Microsoft Office system You can use Excel to create and format spreadsheets and workbooks A workbook contains multiple spreadsheets A spreadsheet is a grid of cells containing numbers, text or formulas Data is entered into cells, grouped by rows and columns Once entered, you calculate your data, sort and filter it And create tables, reports and charts
4 Versions of Excel Excel 2.0 (1987) through 5.0 (1993) Excel 95 (v. 7) to 2003 (v. 11), to 2007 (v. 12), to 2010 (v. 14), to 2013 (v. 15) Latest Mac version = 2011 Excel 14.0, part of Microsoft Office for Mac Major upgrade as at Excel 2007 Excel 2010 and 2013 have added features and many more (esoteric) functions Excel 2013 has a new look and a new file format (*.xlsx versus *.xls) Excel 2013 has 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns = 17+ billion cells 64,000 unique cell formats, 1,024 fonts, 16 million colors Fifteen digit number precision, 32,767 calculation iterations, dates to 12/31/9999
