1 ebooks for Nooks & Windows/Mac Computers Step 1: Installing the required ebook software (Nook Simple Touch, Nook w/glowlight, Kobo, and Windows/Mac computers) Note: Installing the software is not necessary if you only plan to read the ebook in your browser. See p. 7 for more instructions. Visit Adobe s website to download Adobe Digital Editions: Click Download to begin the installation. Click the link for your operating system. Note: these instructions show the steps for a Windows installation. At the bottom of your screen, you will be asked to run or save the installation file. Click Run. When the license agreement appears, check off the box to accept the licensing terms, then click Next. Click Next to install all components. CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY November

2 Allow Adobe to install to the default folder in Program Files and click Install. Adobe Digital Editions will install. Click Close when it is complete. Adobe Digital Editions will launch automatically (see below). If you intend to read books only on your computer, you can now checkout an ebook from OverDrive Live-brary Downloads. You can authorize your computer without an Adobe ID: To register, Click Help in the toolbar, then click Authorize Computer. CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY November

3 Select I want to authorize my computer without an ID and click Next. Click Authorize Click OK to confirm authorization. ebooks that are checked out and downloaded will open in Adobe Digital Editions and you can start reading! HOWEVER, if you intend to transfer your ebooks to an ereader, you MUST register for a free Adobe ID and authorize your computer (see next page). CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY November

4 If you intend to transfer your ebooks to an ereader, you MUST register for a free Adobe ID and authorize your computer. To register, Click Help in the toolbar, then click Authorize Computer. Click on Create an Adobe ID to register. Enter your name. Enter your address. Create a password that you will remember. Click Sign Up. CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY November

5 Adobe will accept your newly created ID and give you a welcome message. Close the webpage by clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Your screen will return to the Adobe Digital Editions Authorize window. Enter the address and password that you just registered with and click Authorize. Adobe will authorize your computer. Click OK. The software is now installed on your computer. A small icon for the program has been placed on your desktop. your address@isp.org Now you can visit OverDrive Līve-brary.com Downloads and begin to download an ebook you are interested in. ebooks that you download to your home computer will download to Adobe Digital Editions. 6 ebooks for Nooks & Windows/Mac Step 2: Checking out ebooks (Nook Simple Touch, Nook w/glowlight, Kobo, and Windows/Mac computers) Before following these steps, make sure you have installed Adobe Digital Editions on your computer and that you have authorized both your computer and your ereader for use with Adobe Digital Editions (UNLESS you are reading your ebook in your computer s browser- See p. 7 for more information) Visit Connetquot Library s webpage: Click the link for ebooks. Click the link for Live-brary. Click Sign in. Choose Connetquot Public Library from the drop down list and then enter the number from the back of your library card and click Sign In. 7 Next, you will search for a title to check out. Click the Collections button to see a list of categories, or type in a title or author into the search box at the top of the screen. When you find a title to check out, click Borrow. Go to your loans page, found under My account. You can now either Download the ebook to your computer with Adobe Digital Editions and then transfer to an ereader, or Read in your browser (i.e. Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.). No software required! Note: These options will differ depending on publisher restrictions. To read in your browser, click Read Now. The ebook will open in the browser. Click or drag to turn the pages. You can also set bookmarks and adjust text settings. To Download to your computer, click Choose A Format. Select EPUB ebook. CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY November

8 Google Chrome: Internet Explorer: Chrome will automatically begin to download the ebook file. You will see the file appear at the bottom of your screen click on this file to launch Adobe Digital Editions. If you have been using Internet Explorer, you will be asked to open or save the file. Click Open to launch Adobe Digital Editions. (Windows 7: this will appear at the bottom of the screen) Or Adobe Digital Editions will launch and the book will begin to download. When your book has finished downloading, you can read it on your computer using the program Adobe Digital Editions. See the following page for instructions on transferring an ebook to an ereader such as a b&w Nook or Kobo. CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY November

9 Transferring to an ereader To transfer an ebook, open Adobe Digital Editions and click the Library button in the upper left-hand corner. Plug your ereader into the USB port in the front of your computer. It may take a few moments for your computer to detect your ereader and for the device to appear. Once it is detected, it will show up in Adobe Digital Editions on the left-hand side of the screen. To transfer the ebook to your ereader, drag the ebook title to your ereader and drop it in. Adobe Digital Editions will authorize your device and copy the ebook to your ereader. CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY November

10 Returning ebooks Early It is not necessary to return your ebooks early. ebooks will expire automatically at the end of the loan period. However, if you wish, you can return most titles early. Open Adobe Digital Editions from your desktop and click the Library icon in the upper left hand corner if you are not already on the main screen. Right-click the book jacket to select your title. In the menu that appears, left-click Return Borrowed Item. Click Return to return the book back to the OverDrive Live-brary Download site. To return an ebook that you read in the browser, visit downloads.live-brary.com and go to your loans page, found under My account. Locate the ebook on your bookshelf and click the Return button.
