7 EPS (.eps)- Encapsulated PostScript Used for placing images or graphics in documents created in page layout or drawing programs. Supports both raster and vector file formats. Document can be saved as an eps in both photoshop and Illustrator. EPS file is good for linked drawings, such as die cut and emboss shapes, as well as linked logo files.

8 GIF (.gif)- Graphics Interchange Format An 8-bit, low-memory option for posting images online. Colors are limited, making GIF s unsuitable for print, but ideal for flash web banners and other web-based designs. Usually used for converting vector graphics for use on the web, such as logos and other line art.

9 JPEG (.jpg)- Joint Photographic Experts Group Used for image compression. Uses lossy compression, which sacrifices image quality to save disk space. JPEG s are best for placing photographs in websites or other web-based applications. Some image data is discarded (lost) as the file compressed. Business clients may request a jpeg of their logo for use in Word documents.

10 PDF (.pdf)- Portable Document Format Used for allowing documents to be viewed and printed independent of the application that was used to create them. Often used for transferring printed pages over the web & for sending files to print. Hi res PDFs often used for newsprint and magazine ads as well as most digital printing.

11 PNG (.png)- Portable Network Graphics Developed to improve upon the GIF file format. Also developed as a result of a patent controversy over the GIF file format. Uses lossy compression, like a jpeg, to reduce file size. All patents on GIF have now expired. PNG may come in handy if you are forced to design for Powerpoint. You can save a logo file as a PNG and it will retain a transparent background in Powerpoint.

12 Resolution

13 PPI vs. DPI PPI = pixels per inch. Used for digital devises such as computers, phones & LED boards. DPI = dots per inch. Refers to printed materials. Includes both digital and offset printing methods.

14 Low Resolution Generally 72 ppi (pixels per inch). Used for documents that will be viewed on digital devises such as computers & LED boards. This can vary though. Retina Displays, such as used on the iphone 4 use 326 ppi. ipad uses 132 ppi.

15 Medium Resolution Generally 150 dpi (dots per inch) or ppi. Often used for documents to be printed for large format outdoor displays, such as billboards, transit shelter posters & bus wraps.

16 High Resolution Anything 300 dpi or above. Used for high quality digital or offset printing.

17 Digital Workflow/ Production Checklist Keep a checklist on hand to look over before sending anything out to print. When managing multiple projects under tight deadlines, it can be easy to forget or skip some steps in the production process. This can often cause problems with the final product, so make it a habit to follow these guidelines in your process. Different companies may have their own checklist you ll need to follow, but this is a good, comprehensive list for you to start with.

18 General Project & Document Considerations

19 Unwanted items have been deleted, nothing is covered with a white box? There are no extra pages, guides or objects in the document? Get rid of document clutter. It can help prevent unwanted items from being printed accidentally. Even items outside the print area can cause problems in the printing process. Don t use white boxes as a masking tool.

20 1/8 (.125) bleed and trim properly applied? Document page size is 100% of final trim size? Outdoor is the exception to this. Sometimes newsprint or magazine ads do not have bleed. Request a spec sheet from the printer or publication.

21 In InDesign: Facing pages used only if the document requires it?

22 If die cutting, is your die line file included and indicated on your proofs? Is the file linked in your document on it s own layer labeled as a die cut?

23 If your project uses foils or embosses, have you prepared the additional files and included them on your disk with printouts? Is the file linked in your document on it s own layer labeled as a foil or an emboss? The shape or area that is being created using a die cut, foil or emboss, or printed with a varnish can be drawn in Illustrator, saved as an eps and linked in your document on its own layer.

24 Graphic Elements & Linked Images

25 Be cautious of hairlines (less than.5pt). Be cautious of thin lines with process color builds.

26 Linked image files verified and updated? Are all linked-image source files available (no embedded images)?

27 Placed images are at 100% of output size? Placed images are rotated in their source application? Placed images are at least 300 dpi? Again Outdoor billboards are the exception to this. Photoshop - enlarge at 110% increments.

28 RGB color for the web, LED boards like the one by the freeway here at Sac State. CMYK color build for 4 color jobs. Duotones or Monotones applied in photoshop for linked images if the job is uses spot colors. Edit the color mode of your images BEFORE you place them in your application! Placed images are correct for the output method? Edit the color mode of your images before you place them in your document.

29 FPO(for placement only) images clearly indicated as such in your document and on your mark up?

30 Blends and gradients properly built in Illustrator? Use the correct colors to match your document. CMYK for process and the correct spot colors for spot jobs.

31 Text used in placed images spell-checked and converted to outlines? No linked text documents? (ex: Microsoft Word) If special processes, such as die cuts, embosses, foils, & varnishes are in the shape of text make sure to covert to outlines.
