1 1 Chapter 1: PageMaker Commands and InDesign Equivalents Adobe InDesign and Adobe PageMaker use many of the same commands. If you are accustomed to Adobe PageMaker, the tables below will help you quickly find what you need in Adobe InDesign PageMaker Edition. In some cases, you ll find the equivalent to a PageMaker command in a palette or a palette menu. For more information about a specific InDesign command or palette, see InDesign Help. File menu commands and equivalents File > New File > Open File > Recent Publications File > Close File > New > Document File > Open File > Open Recent (Windows) File > Close File > Save File > Save There is no preference in InDesign to Save Smaller or Save Faster. Use Save to perform a fast save and Save As to compact a document to the smallest possible size. File > Save As File > Save As See note above. File > Revert File > Revert InDesign does not revert to minisaved versions of a document as Page- Maker does; instead, InDesign offers unlimited levels of Undo. You can also select or type a page number in the Page text box at the bottom of the document window. Layout > Insert Pages Window > Pages Choose Insert Pages from the Pages palette menu. Layout > Remove Pages Window > Pages Choose Delete Pages from the Pages palette menu. Layout > Sort Pages Window > Pages Click and drag pages in the Pages palette to sort them. InDesign displays the type styles available for the selected font. Expert kerning in PageMaker is similar to optical kerning in InDesign. Expert tracking in PageMaker is similar to range kerning in InDesign. Type > Hyphenation Type > Paragraph Choose Hyphenation from the Paragraph palette menu. Type > Alignment Type > Style Type > Define Styles Type > Paragraph or Control palette in Paragraph mode Type > Paragraph Styles or Type > Character Styles Type > Paragraph Styles or Type > Character Styles InDesign supports both paragraph and character styles. Choose New Paragraph Style in the Paragraph Styles palette to create a paragraph style. Choose New Character Style in the Character Styles palette to create a character style.

The Swatches palette in InDesign is equivalent to the Colors palette in PageMaker. Element > Stroke Window > Stroke Choose a stroke style in the Stroke palette or define a custom stroke style. Element > Fill and Stroke Window > Swatches, Window > Stroke, and Window > Attributes Create tints using the Swatches palette. Specify overprinting in the Attributes palette. Element > Frame > Attach Content InDesign automatically creates a frame for text files or graphics you import. To paste content into an existing frame, select the frame, and then place or paste the content into it. Element > Frame > Frame Options Element > Frame > Change to Frame Element > Frame > Next Frame Element > Frame > Previous Frame Element > Frame > Remove From Threads Element > Frame > Delete Content Element > Arrange Object > Text Frame Options (text frames only) Object > Fitting Object > Content > [content type] View > Show Text Threads View > Show Text Threads Select a text frame. Click the port you want to unthread. Click the linked port with the Unthread icon. Select content in the frame, and then press Delete. Object > Arrange For text frames, specify columns, vertical alignment, and inset spacing in the Text Frame Options dialog box. Set horizontal alignment in the Paragraph palette (Type > Paragraph). For graphics and text frames, use subcommands on the Object > Fitting menu to fit content to a frame (or vice versa). Select text with the Type tool. Select graphics with the Direct Selection tool.
