4 Outline Today s talk is going to introduce the following TEX concepts: The Tabular, Itemize and Enumerate Environments The XY-pic package for commutative diagrams The DeclareMathOperator and newcommand objects

5 Tabular Want to make tables using L A TEX? The easiest way to do this is using the tabular environment, which comes with virtually all LATEX installations The environment is modeled on the Comma-Separated Value format which delineates columns using commas In LATEX 2 ε, the version that most of you are using, tabular separates columns by using the & symbol

6 Tabular Why make tables in L A TEX? Donald Knuth 1 personally auto-sizes your rows and columns for you, just as he does with all of your documents. Well maybe not personally.. There are a plethora of shading and color options that can suit your every whim Can you write the statement of the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem, ind D E = A(M) ch(e) M or the Einstein Field Equations, G µν = 8πG T c 2 µν in Excel? 7 Tabular Tabular Example Suppose we want to make the following table of Mathematicians and their dates of birth and death: Mathematician Date of Birth Date of Death Carl Frederich Gauss Henri Poincaré Shiing-Tung Yau Thankfully, not dead yet!

9 Itemize List -omania NO you are a bad person for making this title The syntax for making lists in LATEXis simple. Use the itemize environment! For instance, \begin{itemize} \item Hello World \item Que pasa? \end{itemize} produces: Hello World Que pasa?

10 Itemize More on itemize The itemize environment lets you use any character to head an item. If you want to use the number 1., the syntax is \item[1.] If you want to use an ℵ, it is \item[\aleph] And so on. The itemize environment can also be embedded inside itself, to produce lists inside lists.

11 Itemize Example The following syntax: \begin{itemize} \item[1.] $3x-5=12$ \item[2.] $8\int \zeta\,d\zeta=4\zeta^2+c$ \begin{itemize} \item[a)] this \item[b)] is a list \end{itemize} \item[3.] 10^2+11^2+12^2=13^2+14^2 \end{itemize}

13 Enumerate Enumerate The enumerate environment is similar to itemize. It looks like \begin{enumerate} \item this \item is \item also listlike \end{enumerate} However, \item does not need anything in [] brackets, and will by default number your items sequentially.

14 Enumerate Example The bit of code on the previous page, for instance, compiles to: 1 this 2 is 3 also listlike
